Press Tour Diary: 'Lie to Me'

Tags: , News

Lie-To-Me-Roth_lWHO: Tim Roth, Kelli Williams, Monica Raymund, Brendan Hines, Mekhi Phifer, and exec producers Shawn Ryan, David Nevins, and Samuel Baum.

5:01 pm/PST: New e.p. Ryan is looking to push the show in “a little bit more of a character direction and add a little more adrenaline.”

5:07 pm: Elaborating on the amped-up adrenaline, Ryan says it’s less in a “Shield, 24 sense” and more about putting the characters in “emotionally, physically harrowing situations.” The pace of the show will pick up as well.

5:16 pm: Season 2 will find Lightman “being the liar and not just the lie detector,” teases Ryan. There will also be more father-daughter drama.

5:18 pm: Scoop! Prison Break exec producer Matt Olmstead is now writing for Lie to Me.

5:21 pm: On the addition of Phifer, e.p. Baum says they were looking for someone who wouldn’t get “blown off the screen” by Roth. “We needed someone who was a man, who had gravity, and could own a scene with [Tim].”

5:26 pm: This year’s Thanksgiving episode will be set on Black Friday and involve a deadly stampede at a discount store. “We’ll look at, ‘How [can] good people… end up trampling someone to death?’” says Baum. Additionally, there will be an episode where Eli (Hines) goes completely silent.

5:28 pm: Roth confesses that the grind of headlining an hour-long drama has been a “brutal” adjustment. “I’ve done heavy schedules on films, but the first 13 episodes of this were devastating. I put my foot down and got Sundays off. It was extraordinarily difficult for me, yet I loved it. I’m so incredibly happy to be at work… I love this gig. It’s a privilege.” Roth also hints at some creative frustration in season 1, saying he’s much happier with the scripts this season.

Thank you so much for the information about the Lie To Me panel! I absolutely love this show!

  • Scooper

Matt Olmstead didn’t create Prison Break, he was a writer on the show. Paul Scheuring created PB.

  • Alisha

LOL @ Tim complaining about the schedule xD Another Heigl in the house??? no wonder they will only do 13 episodes, they can’t hack it.

    • XK

Uh… or maybe this was hist first experience with that sort of schedule, and was surprised at how hectic and challenging it was?

I’m pretty sure one comment does not equate him with Heigl who has spent her career throwing her shows/movies under the bus.

  • DMP

Alisha: when’s the last time you worked 14-18 hour days, seven days a week. It’s about time somebody put their foot down and said there’s more to life than you’re damn tv show… GOOD FOR HIM !

  • Kermonk

Its funny those idiots don’t get that they are not supposed to produce that stuff with 18 hour days 7 days a week. Plan properly and get it down to normal times.

  • jenny

hey Aus, Matt O did not create PB. Paul Scheuring did. Matt O was exec producer and writer…

  • The1337

Tim is earning $250k per episode for a show with mediocre ratings, so he really shouldn’t be one to complain.

    • steve

      hey the1337: shut your mouth.
when you put in 25 years of outstanding artistic achievement in a business as grueling and fickle as the movie/tv industry, then you can pass judgement. until then, have a big mac, watch dancing with the stars and keep schtum.

  • dutchie

season 1 was OK but this show def has more potential. I’m excited to see how they’ll come back in season 2!

  • Sue

Tim Roth is an outstanding actor (IMO equaled only by Hugh Laurie), and I’m glad to see Lie To Me headed in it’s new direction. As far as Mr. Roth asking for Sunday off – good for him! A happier, partially-rested actor, who can spend some much-needed family and “down” time, will only add to the show’s success.

  • The1337

Hey Steve, this isn’t the Stalinist Soviet Union. This is the internet and I can say whatever the hell I want especially when it is of merit. I know people that work as hard as he does, working 80+ hours a week and don’t even earn a tenth of what he makes.

    • James

@The1337, sorry, but if someone’s working 80+ hours a week and making less than 25k, they need to ditch that job ASAP. I will grant you that he does make a lot, but he works hard, and has put in the time.

  • Teresa

I think his point was that he just wasn’t used to the grind of series television, not that he was complaining per se. It is kind of amazing that out of that whole story that was the only thing anyone seems to be focusing on. What about the new creative direction of the show? I think it sounds like this will be a great new season for this show.

    • Kate

It definitely sounds like they’ll be taking it in a cool direction. And, I’m looking forward to more character development.

  • anon

I hate to be rude, but I’ve never liked Phifer’s acting. I was happy when he disappeared from “ER” and now he’s on “Lie to Me”. I understand that they need someone to equate with Tim’s presence, but I think Tim is big enough to fill the screen on his own. Or, bring back Jennifer Beals. The actress who portrays his partner is rehearsed and needs to loosen up a bit. And the young “funny” guy, what was that twist all about? Weird.
I love the show though but I suppose it’s b/c of Tim Roth.

    • Kate

I’m actually not a huge fan of Phifer’s acting either. And on Lie to Me, I’ve yet to see where his character has added anything to the show. (And I mean that in all due respect to MP.) I know he’s been promoted to a series regular, but I’m still kind of hoping they go back down to being just 4 core members.
