'Big Bang Theory' exclusive: 'Daily Show' mad man gets schooled!

Lewis-Black-big-bang_lPretty much the last thing you’d expect of a cranium-straining show like The Big Bang Theory is a no-brainer, but its casting of The Daily Show smartass Lewis Black seems to be exactly that.

The Comedy Central hothead will appear in the sitcom’s second episode of the season (airing on Sept. 28) as Professor Crawley, a Caltech entomologist whose life is a shambles. Worse—for him, anyway—it’s a shambles through which Sheldon and Wolowitz are happy to rummage for the sake of settling a bet.

Whad’ya think? Is Black’s guest gig a smarter move on his part or the series’? Sound off below! And bonus points to anyone who can tell me what an entomologist actually does. (Additional reporting by Andy Patrick)

an entomologist is a scientist who studies bugs…like grissom.

    • Nic.

      or like Hodgens on “Bones”

      • Chris

Or like Bug on Crossing Jordan.

  • sunny

Oh great … I was looking for the words “Roseanne Barr will play Howars mother” in this article … couldnt care less about this guy, who is he anyways? Never heard of him before

    • Sam

who is he???? the article says who he is — and for the record, he’s flippin hilarious!

      • Adam

He’s a stand up comic. One of the best, if you ask me!

    • Becks

You really don’t know who Lewis Black is? Here is your assignment, grasshopper: go to your Netflix homepage or your local video store and rent every Lewis Black standup special you can find. You’ll never be the same. You’ll laugh so hard your sides hurt. And the great thing is that all his material is smart. He’s not just some jacka** talking about how stupid women are or how he got so wasted last night. He’s one of the best comedians out there, I promise.

Thanks for the info! Good to know. I didn’t have a clue who he was. (actually thought it was a new writer.)

  • Stacey

Oh, this should be brilliant casting. Lewis will chew up the scenery and bring the laughs in a big way. I’m excited.

  • Laura

Anyone who has seen CSI (or at least, the original days of CSI) should know what an entomologist is. Grissom is one. They study bugs. But anyway, keep the Big Bang Theory scoop coming!! I’m absolutely in love with this show!!

  • rackfocus

I’ve come to the realization that Big Bang can do no wrong. I am definitely excited about having Lewis Black.

  • Kirsty

It’s either words or insects, I always get them mixed up

    It’s insects. 95% sure

    • bootsycolumbia

An etymologist studies words. An entomologist studies bugs.

  • Lisa

Doesn’t an entomologist (sp?) study bugs?

  • Chris

I dunno…sort of smacks of his role in “Accepted.”

  • Kivus

At this point, I’d say Black’s part. I think TBBT is a bigger entertainment entity then Black is currently.

Oh and doesn’t an entomologist study insects?

  • Lynaila

Grissom was an entomologist. An entomologist is a person who studies insects. Their morphology, fisiology, ecology and evolution.
I can’t wait to see the new episodes…

  • Sara

I think it’s a great idea. BBT is a wonderful, smart, funny, etc., under-rated show. Oh, and entomologists study insects.:)

  • Heather

    1. Lewis Black is HILARIOUS, and it’s going to be great for him and this show. I’m looking forward to this episode!!! =)
    2. An entomologist is one who studies insects.

  • Vetinari

As a fan of both BBT and The Daily Show, I love this development.

  • jack_bauer

how will he survive going 22 profanity-deprived minutes

  • Chloeville

Lewis Black is hilarious. This should be good.
