ABC's 'Millionaire' rules Sunday, but 'Big Brother,' '60 Minutes' help CBS win the night

ABC and CBS locked in a narrow ratings battle Sunday: The final evening of The Alphabet’s 10th anniversary Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? celebration was the most-watched program, but The Eye took the title for the evening with the one-two punch of 60 Minutes and Big Brother. ABC’s Shark Tank continued to grow its audience.

Exclusive: Jayma Mays Trading 'Glee' For 'Heroes'

Categories: Glee, Heroes

Heroes-Jayma-Masi_lOh, relax. It’s only for one episode, and it won’t affect Glee at all. In fact, had the actress’ whimsical Fox series not already wrapped production on its initial 13-episode order, she wouldn’t have been available to do it. But it had, so she was.

Anyway, back on Heroes, Mays will reprise her role of Charlie, Hiro’s ill-fated love interest. As the dying time-traveler zips back and forth through the ages to accomplish his bucket list… well, isn’t it safe to assume that saving his almost-sweetheart would be pretty high on the list? That’s what I thought.

What do you think? Does the thought of Mays back on Heroes make you Glee-ful? Sound off below. (Additional reporting by Andy Patrick)

'Lost' exclusive: Japanese superstar Hiroyuki Sanada lands 'significant' role

Categories: Lost

Hiroyuki-Shimosawa_lSuper-famous Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada — best known stateside for his roles in The Last Samurai and Rush Hour 3 — is joining the sixth and final season of Lost, sources confirm to me exclusively.

Who’s Sanada playing? Beats the hell out of me. I squeezed every last one of my moles for deets and the only thing I came up with is that it’s a “significant recurring” role. Sounds like a case for Doc Jensen… READ FULL STORY »

Thursday ratings: 'Big Brother,' NFL come out on top

Big Brother‘s watching — sporadically, at least: CBS’s summer staple has been all over the ratings map the past few weeks, with viewership as high as 9 million on Sunday and as low as 6.7 million earlier this month. Who Wants to be a Millionaire pulled in a respectable 6.8 million viewers, picking up half a million in its second half hour, mostly from Big Brother. Fox’s NFL preseason game held steady over the course of the evening and brought in the most of the viewers in the 18-49 demo, but CBS owned the night, with its 10 p.m. rerun beating NBC and ABC combined.

'Ugly Betty' scoop: Kristen Johnston in, Paula Abdul out!

Categories: Ugly Betty

Kristen-Johnston_lTake note, American Idol: This is how you replace Paula Abdul.

Ugly Betty has tapped 3rd Rock Emmy winner Kristen Johnston to replace Abdul in the now-recurring role of Helen, Mode’s newest office temp and Amanda’s elder doppelganger. Abdul had been in negotiations to play the part, but last week the deal came undone — in part, I hear, due to the ex-Idol judge’s insane list of demands. (Two words: Private. Jet.)

“I’ve always considered myself a poor man’s Paula Abdul,” Johnston says with a laugh. READ FULL STORY »

Armchair Casting Director: 'Ugly Betty'

Remember me hinting back in July about a possible mob subplot on this season’s Ugly Betty involving Hilda? Well, based on the following casting intel, it looks like producers are moving full-steam ahead with the story, which would find Ana Ortiz’s lovelorn single mom falling for a poor man’s Christopher Moltisanti! Ask Ausiello: Spoilers on 'Grey's,' 'House,' 'NCIS,' 'Bones,' 'Gossip Girl,' 'Supernatural,' and more!

Meredith-and-Derek_lGot a scoop request about your favorite show? An anonymous tip you’re dying to share? Just want to say hi? You can send any/all of the above to ausielloscoop@ew.com

Question: Grey’s Anatomy fans are buzzing about a possible Derek and Meredith break-up this season. Please tell me it isn’t true. —Katherine
Ausiello:
It isn’t true. Here’s what is true: The Mer-Der relationship will be written a little lighter during the first half of the season as a result of Ellen Pompeo’s real-life pregnancy and subsequent maternity leave. “I think we would be irresponsible writers if we didn’t give a woman who’s seven-months pregnant a little less time on her feet,” maintains exec producer Krista Vernoff. “She’s waddling around seven-months pregnant about to push a baby out of her body. We have a responsibility to alleviate her screen time a little bit.” That said, Vernoff insists Mer-Der are at no risk of losing their title as Seattle Grace’s reigning super couple. “It would be false to say that Mer and Der are no longer the focus of the series,” she says. “Derek and Mer will always be a focus of the series.”

Question: If you don’t give us some 30 Rock scoopage, I shall cry. —Amy
Ausiello:
No tears, please. They, um, creep me out. So you hold back the flood waters, and I’ll tell you some stuff, okay? Deal? In the season’s fourth episode, Liz will endeavor to round out the cast of TGS with a new member, naturally leaning toward a hire who is more than just crazy talented. (Or less than just crazy talented… as in just crazy.) That same episode will introduce a wannabe who’s hoping to be discovered while pretending he’s a robot in Times Square. Since the character’s supposed to recur, his dream just might come true. READ FULL STORY »

Ratings: 'America's Got Talent' vs. 'Big Brother'

America’s Got Talent continued to dominate Tuesday’s ratings, though it lost roughly a million viewers from last week. Perhaps those folks tuned into CBS’ Big Brother, which gained more than a million viewers in comparison. ABC’s latest reality offering, Shaq VS, premiered, with Shaquille O’Neal challenging Ben Roethlisberger of the Pittsburgh Steelers to a quarterback challenge. Though the show finished in third place at 9 p.m., it did deliver ABC its strongest summer numbers in that time slot (with regular programming) in over a year in both total viewers and Adults 18-49.

Exclusive: 'Melrose Place' welcomes Mrs. Channing Tatum

Categories: Melrose Place

Jenna-Dewan_lIt’s not G.I. Joe himself but it’s close.

Melrose Place has booked Channing Tatum’s real-life bride, dancer-turned-actress Jenna Dewan, for a multi-episode arc. The Step Up star will play a young movie studio exec who takes a liking to wannabe Tarantino, Jonah (Michael Rady), in at least two episodes.

Melrose gets rebooted on The CW beginning Sept. 8. In the meantime, enjoy this related (and rather amusing) video.
