Scoop: Kate Winslet bound for HBO?

Categories:

kate-winslet-Ausiello_lKate Winslet better make room in her crowded trophy case for an Emmy.

Killer Films is developing a five-hour TV miniseries adaptation of James M. Cain’s Depression-era novel Mildred Pierce with the Oscar winner attached to headline. The project, which is being shopped to cable (including HBO), centers on a single mom struggling for independence during the Great Depression.

Mildred comes with some built-in awards cache: The 1945 film version netted Joan Crawford her first Academy Award.

'Lost': Mr. Eko wants to stage his comeback!

Categories: Lost

Mr-EkoAdewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, aka former tailie Mr. Eko, has a message for Lost executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse: “Fans of Eko should have hope.” Though Akinnuoye-Agbaje was the first castaway to vote himself off the island in season three, the British actor hopes to be one of the dead characters who makes a comeback in the drama’s final season. “I loved playing that character,” he told EW at the premiere of G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra, in which he plays Heavy Duty. “I loved working with that team and the reception I got from people was phenomenal. Even at Comic-Con this year I went to sign my action figure for G.I. Joe and people had tons of questions about Lost. It makes you feel good that you could be off a show for more than a year and still have people thinking about your character. It was a great part.

“I’m here for them,” Akinnuoye-Agbaje continues. “Adewale is open for business. We have had talks about some things they might do for the final season and there are other dead folks coming back allegedly but at the moment it is still a maybe. A strong maybe but I have not shot anything yet or signed any contracts. But I’m hoping.”

The executive producers declined to comment but they did tell attendees at Comic-Con last month that the show will allow for dead or presumed-dead characters to return. Definites include Daniel Faraday (Jeremy Davies), Claire (Emilie de Ravin), Juliet (Elizabeth Mitchell) and Boone (Ian Somerhalder). What do you think? Should Mr. Eko be among the dearly departed who’s allowed to stage a comeback? – With additional reporting from Carrie Bell

Ratings: 'America's Got Talent' leads Wednesday, 'Wipeout' hits new low

Categories: TV Biz, TV Ratings

Two hours of America’s Got Talent drew big numbers for NBC Wednesday night, while the final episode of The Philanthropist departed the TV ether rather quietly. With no more So You Think You Can Dance (at least for the next few weeks), Fox aired Bones and Lie To Me reruns. ABC’s Wipeout, now in the 9 p.m. time slot instead of 8 p.m., tallied its lowest audience of the summer.

'Big Bang Theory' exclusive: 'Daily Show' mad man gets schooled!

Categories: The Big Bang Theory

Lewis-Black-big-bang_lPretty much the last thing you’d expect of a cranium-straining show like The Big Bang Theory is a no-brainer, but its casting of The Daily Show smartass Lewis Black seems to be exactly that.

The Comedy Central hothead will appear in the sitcom’s second episode of the season (airing on Sept. 28) as Professor Crawley, a Caltech entomologist whose life is a shambles. Worse—for him, anyway—it’s a shambles through which READ FULL STORY »

Ratings: 'America's Got Talent' dominates other first-run programming

NBC continues to dominate summer Tuesdays with the help of America Got Talent. Once again, the newest installment topped both the 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. hours. A repeat at 8 p.m. nearly outperformed Fox’s Hell’s Kitchen, and did defeat ABC’s Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Though let’s give the Alphabet credit: Millionaire‘s two-week 10th anniversary edition is proving a bigger ratings draw than former timeslot occupant The Superstars.

'Law & Order: SVU' exclusive: Scott Foley wanted for murder?!

Categories: Law & Order: SVU

This just in: Scott Foley—late of The Unit and my beloved Felicity—has booked a guest appearance on Law & Order: SVU. He’ll play a real estate agent involved in a murder investigation in episode 4, “Hammered.” “I’ve been a fan of the show for a long time,” Foley tells me. “And the character was fully developed with addictions and problems both personally and professionally. Plus… it’s SVU, come on!”

Ratings: NBC's 'Talent,' Fox's 'SYTYCD' finale dominate week

Another week, another dose of double domination from NBC’s America’s Got Talent. For the week ending Aug. 9, the talentfest took the No. 1 and No. 2 spots for its Tuesday and Wednesday episodes, which drew 13.0 million and 10.7 million viewers, respectively. But, with a good showing for its summer finale, Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance showed up at No. 4 for its Thursday episode, which grabbed 9.6 million viewers. The first half of the finale, which aired Wednesday evening, also had a banner showing, appearing at No. 12 with 7.8 million viewers. The series returns Sept. 9 for its first non-summer episodes, so it will be interesting to see how it plays against in-season fare on the other networks.

As is the norm for the summer months, repeats dominated much of the Top 20 — from CBS’ NCIS at No. 3 (9.9 million) all the way down to a reairing of NBC’s America’s Got Talent on Tuesday at No. 18 (6.9 million). The handful of new episodes that appeared in the Top 20 included: ABC’s Wipeout at No. 8 (8.0 million); a pre-season NFL showdown between Buffalo and Tennesse at No. 10 (7.9 million); CBS’ Big Brother at both No 14. (7.1 million) and No. 20 (6.4 million); NBC’s Dateline at No. 14 (7.1 million); ABC’s premiere of the prime-time revival of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? at No. 17 (7.0 million); and Fox’s Hell’s Kitchen at No. 19 (6.7 million).

The full Top 20 is after the jump.
