How I Met Your Mother turns 100 episodes old this January, and it’s marking the occasion by handing fans the mother of all gifts: some major intel about the show’s titular mama.
“There is some serious Mother action in episode 100,” reveals executive producer Craig Thomas. “It’ll be the closest Ted’s ever come to [discovering who she is]. He’s getting a step closer every episode this season, and episode 100 [we] kind of go bananas with it.”
Although Thomas won’t outright confirm that Ted’s future wife will be unmasked, he hints that he and fellow exec producer Carter Bays “are spending a lot of time trying to cast the female role in Ted’s story for episode 100.”
And if that’s not enough to keep viewers entertained, the milestone episode will climax with what Thomas calls a “big-ass musical” number headlined by the show’s resident song-and-dance man, Neil Patrick Harris. “There will be a huge Barney story culminating in an enormous musical number that we’re going to spend way too much of Twentieth Television’s money on,” Thomas says with a laugh. “Fans of Neil’s performance at the Emmys will enjoy the ending of the episode. It’s not a musical episode, but all of a sudden it becomes one. It’ll probably be one of the craziest things we’ve ever done on the show.”
If I didn’t know better, I’d say episode 100 is going to be… this is the second time I’m breaking my promise to never do this again, but I really can’t resist… episode 100 is going to be… forgive me God for I have sinned… episode 100 is going to be… legen — wait for it — dary!

Now this is why I love HIMYM!
I can’t wait!!!
All I don”t think we are going to see the mother
I don’t think so either, but I hope so, the storyline needs a boost in the arm
I can’t wait! I love it!
LOVE THIS SHOW! Can’t wait to see what happens!
Hot damn, I thought the mother aspect was awesome but NPH singing! I couldn’t have expected that. So excited.
Can’t wait!! This sounds too awesome and yes, the legendary joke will never get old.
My favorite show right now and probably my favorite comedy ever;
YAY!!!!!!!!
OMG!!!! I SO want to see this episode! Just when you think HIMYM has gotten as amazing as it could possibly get… it surprises you again!
This sounds seriously awesome. I cannot wait. There are a million good reasons to love that show, and Ausiello just gave us (at least) 2 more.
Ahhhh January cannot come soon enough!!!! Love my HIMYM!!!
i love this show.
You’ve got me all excited for this but we have to wait til JANUARY to find that out!!!!! I’m so excited for the mother and the Barney story, I’m really curious to see what it is
After the bait and switch near the end of last season where they heavily implied they’d reveal the mother and then it was just Sarah Chalke again, I’m surprised anyone still cares.
Agree with Vetinari that the teasing is getting to be a bit too much, although I’m glad the mother didn’t turn out to be Chalke. Can’t put my finger on why, but I just don’t like her.
Anyway, bigger picture is if the sthow makes to a 100 it will live on on TBS, Nick, TV Land, etc. So that’s good news for all of us NPH fans. He really has made that show. Minus Barney, the show would be just another Friends wannabe, canceled after maybe a year (albeit with a clever premise — the guy narrating to his future kids).
I think that statement is a little exaggerated. Yes, NPH is incredible, but I don’t think the show would be sh*t without him.
Well, the show did already sell it’s syndication package (to Lifetime), so 100′s not that big a deal in that aspect….. but WOW!
I’m so psyched. I hope they get like 4-5 B+ listers (or A- listers), and tease it out that way.
I still don’t like the idea of a musical number. As much as I think the cast has the talent for it (particularly NPH and Jason Segel), I just don’t see it fitting without being completely cheesy. Nice to see Ted’s story getting more attention though. I love Barney, but it seems like it’s really become The Barney Show, which I don’t like.
You’ve got a good point. But think about it this way, the Slapsgiving episode was one of their best, which ended in a song by Jason and NPH. I’m sure the producers had that in mind. Honestly, Ted has slowly become my least favorite character (probably because his story arc has jumped the shark too many times due to the title of the show, while the others continue to grow and develop like normal folks). Still love the show, can’t wait to watch.
