Gee, I mean, why should anyone take this organization seriously? They blatantly (and literally) award propaganda, i.e., representations of gays on T.V. insofar that are “positive”.

Um, aren’t some gay people not “positive” people? Are there no gay people that steal, lie or cheat? Why is it that someone gets rewarded when they play a gay person who is depicted “positively” but that person would just as soon be labeled a bigot if he portrayed the character “negatively”? There is no such thing as equality when one group of people is always expected to be viewed in a positive light.

Ben, first of all, that’s a load of crap. What GLAAD does is make sure there’s space for a legimate approach to adress gay charcters and gay lifestyle.

When that soap where the two guys didn’t kiss (sorry, not an american, and don’t know soaps), they received a huge amount of backlash inspite of the fact that they are nice people and not at all cliched (for I what have been told).

However, they have always supported shows such as Queer as Folk and The L Word, who were filled with good and characters. Hell, they even have praised Famke Jansen in Nip/Tuck, and her role was basically a crazy transexual villain.

Has nothing to do with showing a perfect picture, but assuring that there’s a picture at all.

But you know hat? If more gay villains is what we need for people like you stop whining about GLAAD and gay characters, then bring them!

I sure would love to see a gay villanous couple on tv.

Ben…you are kind of an idiot. And you know little about television. Gays have been portrayed for years as either flaming stereotypes or promiscuous, disease-spreading pigs. No one is asking for all positive, squeaky clean gay characters. We’re asking for a range…a fuller and more accurate representation of the community, just as you would hope for yours. Of course, TV doesn’t have enough narrow-minded, dense people to represent you. Such a pity.

I’m not gay and I don’t pay that much attention to the portrayal of gays on TV but I clearly remember one year watching TV and the only lesbian characters I saw were both portrayed as crazy stalkers. Given that trend I can understand why GLAAD would be concerned about whether gay people are depicted as villians, especially since you rarely see an evil guy who just happens to be gay. Their evilness is usually connected to their sexuality somehow.

Well, there has a spate of open homosexuals involved in child rape in real life (ee my post above) so the dearth of gay villains is pretty noticeable.

Actually, FD Olivia on “24″ this past season enlisted the help of a former campaign aid to murder Jon Voigt’s character. He was gay, but that was separate from his complicity in the murder. She woke him up at 4am and we saw who he was in bed with.

My idea of a positive portrayal of gay characters? Portrayals where they get no special favors. Portrayals where the characters are written comparably to the hetero characters, and either their straight-acting-ness or flamboyance is comparable to everyone else’s within the context of the show & the world it inhabits. Be it Brothers and Sisters, Ugly Betty, True Blood, or others.
