Ratings: NBC's 'Sunday Night Football,' 'Leno' rule the week

The final week before broadcast television’s official premiere week (which started last night) was dominated by none other than NBC, which topped ratings for the week ending Sept. 20 with Sunday Night Football at No. 1 with 24.8 million viewers, the premiere of The Jay Leno Show at No. 2 with 18.4 million viewers, and the season finale of summer hit America’s Got Talent at No. 3 with 15.8 million viewers.

The rest of the Top 5 is rounded out by the Tuesday episode of NBC’s America’s Got Talent at No. 4 with 13.9 million viewers and CBS’s airing of the 61st Annual Emmy Awards, which showed up at No. 5 with 13.5 million viewers, up 9 percent in total viewers from last year. The Wednesday night airing of The Jay Leno Show, which pulled 13.4 million viewers, was next up at No. 6. The show was up and down all week, and dropped from its high of 18.4 million viewers to its Friday low with 7.6 million viewers. It remains to be seen how Leno will do when ABC and CBS’s 10 p.m. dramas return this week.

Finally, after a summer when CBS repeats nearly dominated each week, other shows with early fall premieres began to creep into the Top 20. CBS’s Survivor: Samoa premiered to 11.7 million viewers, good enough for No. 9. Fox’s Bones drew 10.4 million viewers for a No. 11 ranking, and NBC’s The Biggest Loser weighed in at No. 12 with 9.9 million viewers.

Also making the Top 20 this week were two of NBC’s Thursday-night comedies: The Office at No. 16 with 8.2 million viewers and Community at No. 17 with 7.9 million viewers. However, these two will likely drop out of the Top 20 once all of the networks’ shows return this week. Rounding out the bottom of the Top 20, was a three-way tie between shows that nabbed 7.8 million viewers each: a repeat of CBS’s CSI: NY, the season finale of CBS’s Big Brother, and the season premiere of Fox’s Fringe. The full numbers for everything are after the jump.

'Melrose' scoop: New details on Heather Locklear's return!

The news about Heather Locklear’s return to Melrose Place keeps getting better: Sources confirm that Locklear will play Katie Cassidy’s boss at the PR firm, a genius move that will pit the show’s former and current vixens against one another. This doesn’t come as a complete surprise since Cassidy dropped hints about a workplace showdown between Amanda and Ella at Entertainment Weekly‘s pre-Emmy party last week. Oh, how convenient — the video of that interview is after the jump! READ FULL STORY »

New season of 'Sarah Silverman' full of 'magic, gayness, and love'

Categories: Emmy Awards

I think Sarah Silverman made fun of me. The incident in question took place Sunday on the Emmy red carpet and it involved a weird thing my mouth allegedly does when I conduct interviews. I say allegedly because Silverman is the first celeb to point this facial tick out to me — and I’ve been doing this for a long time. Anyway, the whole thing was caught on tape, so watch the clip after the jump and tell me: Did Sarah Silverman make fun of me? (FYI: Said clip also contains some very mild spoilers about the new season of The Sarah Silverman Show, lest you think the interview was all about me.) READ FULL STORY »

Ratings: Football tops improved Emmys

CBS’ presentation of the Emmys improved on last year’s ratings by about a million viewers, but NBC’s Sunday Night Football still came out far ahead, averaging 21.7 million viewers to the Emmys’ 13.3 million. The Giants vs. Cowboys matchup, though, was particularly tough competition, logging the largest overnight household rating for a prime-time NFL game in 11 years. The two huge events rendered programming on other networks mostly moot, and NBC easily logged a victory for the night.

The Peacock had a decent rest of the weekend as well, scoring on Friday with Dateline (7.4 million viewers) and The Jay Leno Show (with 7.7 million viewers, down significantly from its debut but still respectable for the dead-zone night). Football won Saturday for ABC, tackling 6.2 million viewers.

Here, a look at Sunday’s lineup:

Breaking: 'Glee' renewed for full season

Categories: Glee

It’s official: Fox has picked up Glee for a full season. The musicomedy, which has performed solidly in the ratings, initially received a 13-episode order from the network. The back-nine pickup brings the total number of first-season episodes to — I suck at math but I think I’ve got this — 22.

Thoughts? Relieved? Indifferent? Glee-full? Sound off below.

Mariska Hargitay drops 'SVU' bomb: 'There's a lot of making out coming up'

A high-profile health scare. Contract renewal drama. Nearly a year without seeing me. You name it, Mariska Hargitay endured it in the past eight months. Yet my reigning BFF was surprisingly battle scar-free at Sunday’s Emmys. I guess it’s true what they say: What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, more gracious, and extra generous with the spoilage. Which brings me to the quote in the headline. Who is she talking about? And is she joking? The answer’s after the jump… READ FULL STORY »

Lisa Edelstein on House and Cuddy: 'It's true love'

There are few things in life I look forward to more than my annual Emmy red carpet run-in with the inimitable Lisa Edelstein. (Don’t judge me.) And this year’s encounter did not disappoint. Not only did Ms. E take her strongest pro-Huddy position to date, but she defended Cuddy’s right to “branch out” while Dr. Crabbypants gets his act together, and then ended the interview by essentially calling me a hypocrite! What’s not to love? See for yourself after the jump. READ FULL STORY »

Steve Carell: 'Office' wants Amy Ryan back full-time!

On yesterday’s Emmy red carpet, Steve Carell confirmed something I had long suspected: The Office wants Amy Ryan (a.k.a. Michael’s soul mate Holly) to stick around full time. Carell also waxed philosophic about his Emmy losing streak and answered this burning question: Is this the season The Office morphs into The Sopranos?!
