Ratings: 'America's Got Talent' finale boosts 'Leno'

The season finale of NBC’s America’s Got Talent averaged 15.5 million viewers over two hours, gaining four million from start to finish. “Thank you, reality TV finale lead-in!” shouted the third episode of NBC’s The Jay Leno Show, which improved on its Tuesday night audience by over 2 million viewers. Fox’s Glee and So You Think You Can Dance each lost less than a million viewers from last Wednesday’s premieres; both should easily win their time slots hour in terms of younger viewers moving forward in a post-Talent world. Not enough people cared about The CW’s series debut of The Beautiful Life; it turns out you can just look at Mischa Barton on the Internet instead, plus that way you don’t have to miss Glee.

Ask Ausiello: Spoilers on 'House,' 'True Blood,' 'Grey's,' 'Lost,' and more!

ausiello-house-scoop_lGot a scoop request? An anonymous tip you’re dying to share? Just want to say hi? You can send any/all of the above to ausielloscoop@ew.com

Question: Has it dawned on anyone that Taub and Thirteen’s three-year fellowships are about to end on House? Do you know if the show plans to follow through on that? And, if so, does this mean Peter Jacobson and Olivia Wilde are leaving? —Mindy
Ausiello:
It certainly dawned on me. And it dawned on series creator David Shore — at least it did when I reminded him recently. He says he hasn’t figured out what will happen to Taub and Thirteen after their fellowships expire. Luckily, time is on his side. “It won’t be until the end of the season,” he says, adding that it’s not in his nature to gloss over such plot points. “I don’t like those things to be fake-outs.” What do you think? Do you want Taub and Thirteen to stay on? Or are you hoping they opt to seek greener pastures? Cast your votes in the comments section!

Question: Will Cuddy find out that House had real sex with that woman (a.k.a. Franka Potente) while in the asylum? —Gregory
Ausiello:
Not anytime soon, according to Lisa Edelstein. “She doesn’t know about the real girl or the real sex he has in the season premiere,” she says. “So far in scripts I have read she has not acknowledged that she knows. They certainly haven’t discussed it. It might break her heart.” Regardless, Edelstein says the House-Cuddy dynamic “continues to have its ups and downs” this season. “She has to eventually deal with him coming back [to work] and what his role will be and how will she handle him and what kind of state is he coming back in. They have feelings for each other — deeper than colleagues. But who knows if they will ever be right for each other? They never seem to be coming at each other at the same time. We are having fun no matter how we play it. Being at odds and playing off Hugh is great fun. If we ever get together I just don’t want it to seems false or forced, but I trust Katie and David to make the right moves.” READ FULL STORY »

Bob-Saget_lTen-alarm TiVo alert! Bob Saget has signed on to co-host a special episode of America’s Funniest Home Videos that will air in November, EW.com has confirmed. The comedian and former Full House star—who anchored ABC’s video-clip series from its November 1989 debut as a one-hour special to 1997—will share emcee duties with current host Tom Bergeron as they highlight the best moments from AFV‘s two-decade run, which may include but are not limited to crotch hits, dancing animals, toupee snafus, and wedding wipeouts.  The episode, which will be shot in October, marks Saget’s first appearance on the show since his departure 12 years ago. Season 20 begins Oct. 4.

'True Blood' exclusive: The bombshell secret that would destroy Bill and Sookie

Categories: True Blood

true-blood_lIn what would be a boon to Sookie-Eric fans, True Blood boss Alan Ball isn’t ruling out incorporating a major (and controversial) plot point from the books that, up to now, has only been hinted at in the series (spoiler alert): That Bill came to Bon Temps and seduced Sookie with the ulterior motive of getting her to work for Queen Sophie-Anne.

“It’s certainly something that I found really compelling in the books,” says Ball of Bill’s deep dark secret. “I was like, ‘Wow.’ But I can’t really tell you what I’m going to do story-wise. So much of the appeal of the show depends on the element of surprise.” READ FULL STORY »

Ratings: Leno, 'Melrose Place' take dips

The Jay Leno Show dropped 42 percent of its premiere audience on Tuesday — or roughly 7.5 million viewers, according to preliminary numbers. Night 2 of Leno’s prime-time NBC talker averaged 10.7 million viewers as the show went up against the last half of Big Brother‘s two-hour season finale and Barbara Walters’ repackaged sit-down with Patrick Swayze. However, last night’s Leno did outperform former time slot holder Law & Order: SVU, which averaged 9.3 million viewers least season Tuesdays at 10 p.m.

The CW’s rebooted Melrose Place also shed viewers in its second outing, down 21 percent from last week’s series debut, according to overnight numbers, while 90210s ratings held strong. Meanwhile, The Biggest Loser returned to NBC with a two-hour season opener that averaged 9.9 million viewers (but rose to 10.5 million by the last half hour). Fox’s plus-sized Bachelor experiment, More to Love, ended its first season with a two-hour finale that averaged 4.3 million viewers, peaking at 5.2 million for its final 30 minutes.

Exclusive: Ray Wise moves into 'Dollhouse'

Categories: Dollhouse

Ray-Wise_lIt’s not James Marsters but this will do nicely…

Dollhouse has tapped spooky-cool Ray Wise to join the cast in the potentially recurring role of Howard, an intelligent higher-up in the Dollhouse who has huge presence and humor.

Wise is coming off of a two-year stint as Lucifer on The CW’s Reaper. Of course, to me, he’ll forever be the dude who offed Laura Palmer.

Dollhouse, which kicks off season 2 a week from Friday, is amassing quite the impressive talent roster this season. In addition to Wise, upcoming guest stars include Jamie Bamber, Keith Carradine, Alexis Denisoff, and Summer Glau.

Thoughts on Wise’s casting? Sound off below!

Ratings: NFL on NBC scores for week ending Sept. 13

Categories: TV Biz, TV Ratings

Know an easy way to tell that fall is here? Simple: Look at broadcast TV ratings, currently dominated by football telecasts. For the week ending Sept. 13, NBC scored a ratings touchdown, as both its Sunday and Thursday night airings of NFL games took the No. 1 and 2 spots with 21.1 million and 20.9 million viewers, respectively. We’ll see in the coming weeks if any of TV’s top scripted and competition shows — like CBS’ The Mentalist and ABC’s Dancing with the Stars — can top the sports airings when they return to airing new episodes.

Beyond football, however, NBC still managed to make a splash in the Top 20, with America’s Got Talent, which is winding down to its finale tomorrow night. The show’s Tuesday airing appearing at No. 3 with 12 million and its Wednesday airing landing at No. 6 with 10.1 million. Squeezed in between AGT was CBS’s 60 Minutes, which popped up at No. 5 with 10.5 million viewers, and a repeat of CBS’s NCIS.

Talent, however, wasn’t the only singing and dancing show to top the ratings chart: The series premiere of Fox’s much-promoted Glee attracted 7.5 million viewers, good enough to land it at No. 13; and the fifth season premiere of the network’s So You Think You Can Dance — debuting for the first time in the fall — was watched by 6.6 million viewers to put it at No. 19. Beyond that, though, the week’s rating were rather unexciting, highlighted by Fox’s Hell’s Kitchen (8 million viewers at No. 10); three episodes of CBS’s Big Brother (which ends with a two-hour season finale tonight); and a double dose of NBC’s Dateline. Plus, of course, a bevy of repeats, courtesy of CBS.

The full weekly ratings are after the jump.

'True Blood' season finale ratings are in!

Categories: True Blood

It looks like the MTV Video Music Awards took a little bite out of True Blood‘s ratings. Sunday’s second-season finale attracted 5.1 million viewers, down from the record 5.3 million that tuned in on August 23 but on par with the last outing on Aug. 30. Still, HBO has plenty to crow about. Blood was up more than 100 percent over its season 1 finale (2.5 million viewers). Speaking of TB‘s season-ender, make sure you read my morning-after Q&A with Alan Ball!

Exclusive: Columnist Dan Savage talks about his HBO pilot

Categories: Television

Sex-advice columnist Dan Savage spoke to EW exclusively about shooting his new HBO pilot for a talk-show based on his popular syndicated column Savage Love. There’s no word yet when he might hear if HBO will pick up the series, but he says early indications were positive. The pilot — also called Savage Love — features Savage discussing the latest sex news, welcoming guest Olivia Munn from Attack of the Show! (a “geek sex superstar,” he says), reporting a field piece from a youth-oriented church in LA that discourages masturbation, and answering advice questions from the audience.

“We’re trying to make sure the show wasn’t the typical TV stuff about sex, where the host doesn’t seem to have ever had sex and certainly has no aberrant sexual interests and presumes the audience feels the same way,” he says. “I don’t want to take that usual comedic tone of derisive mockery. I think we’re all in it together — we all look ridiculous having sex, and we all feel ridiculous when we’re done, and we’ve all done ridiculous things. There needs to be this sense of camaraderie.”

If Savage Love becomes a series, Savage hopes to have a mix of celebrity guests (on his wish list: the Jonas Brothers) and lesser-known authors, like Daniel Bergner (The Other Side of Desire). He also says that future field pieces would distinguish themselves from that other carnal-centric HBO series. “Real Sex is great,” he says. “We don’t want to recreate Real Sex: to go to the dildo factory and look at the dildos; to go to the SM party and look at the SMers. It’s not interesting. I know there are kinky people in the world — I’ve dated a lot of them.” Savage says he’s most interested in “the intersection of politics and sex in unexpected places. Although we may end up at a dildo factory every once in awhile.”

'Vampire Diaries' actress Kayla Ewell talks about alleged flashing incident

Categories: TV Biz, TV Ratings

Vampire-Diaries-Kayla-Vicki_lLast Thursday, Vampire Diaries bowed to The CW’s highest debut ratings ever. So Kayla Ewell, who plays Vicki on the show, has a request: Stop talking about those supposed mug shots that made the rounds on the Internet last week, and start talking about those ratings. “Having this be the first story that’s released is so frustrating,” Ewell says. “[The situation] is so exaggerated and [has been] made into something it’s not.”

A little background: On Aug. 22, police responded to several phone calls about a group of women who were allegedly flashing motorists and hanging off a bridge in Forsyth, Ga. When police arrived at the scene, they found four actresses from Vampire Diaries — Candice Accola, Sara Canning, Nina Dobrev and Ewell — and a photographer, Tyler Shields. (Another actress who does not appear on the show, Krystal Vayda, was also on the scene.) Officers looking through the group’s pics found “numerous photographs of the females hanging, sitting, and straddling the bridge,” according to a report by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. As EW previously reported, the six were taken into police custody, paid a fine, and were released soon after.

But, according to Ewell, the incident was more innocent than it was made out to be. The actress says while on a road trip with her castmates (the show shoots nearby), the group decided to stop to take pictures on a bridge. That’s when they were rushed by Monroe County cops. “They were like, ‘We’re getting calls that people are flashing,’” Ewell says. “And we’re like, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa. The only thing that’s flashing is our camera.’” The actress says that after showing police their photos, the group was asked to follow officials to the police station, where they were ticketed for loitering on a public walkway.

So why did motorists allegedly think the actresses were exposing themselves? “I have no idea,” Ewell says. “We are not the type of girls who flash our breasts. In all honesty, the size of my breasts aren’t necessarily something people would be interested in. It’s so ridiculous. I would never do that.” (As for those rumors that the group was drinking? Not true, says Ewell: “I mean, this happened at 11 am in the morning.”)

But Ewell and the cast is still trying to focus on the positive, regardless of whatever bad press the situation created. “We’re trying to straighten everything out and be happy that we’re on a fabulous TV show,” she says. “As a cast, we have all worked so incredibly hard to get here. We don’t want people to think of us this way.”

Exclusive: Eric Balfour joins 'Beautiful Life'

Categories: The Beautiful Life

beautiful-life_lIn a move that will no doubt trigger an avalanche of show killer jokes, Eric Balfour is joining the cast of The CW’s The Beautiful Life for a multi-episode arc.

The star of Hawaii, Conviction, Sex Love & Secrets, and a slew of other short-lived series will play Eric, a charming rival to Claudia (Elle Macpherson) at a competing modeling agency.

To be fair, Balfour has also appeared on a bunch of shows that weren’t euthanized after nine episodes. In addition to The O.C., he had arcs on 24, The West Wing, and Six Feet Under. He was also really charming on The Ex List, so lighten up on the dude.

Fun fact free of charge: The gig reunites Balfour with his former O.C. co-star Mischa Barton.
