'HIMYM' exclusive: Look who's been cast as Lily's dad!

HIMYM-casting_lAt long last the mother father is revealed!

Sources confirm to me exclusively that comic goofball Chris Elliott has landed the pivotal role of Lily’s estranged dad on How I Met Your Mother.

The highly-anticipated family reunion is slated to air Nov. 23 when father and daughter come face-to-face at a Thanksgiving celebration hosted by Lily’s grandparents.

I’m told the episode will feature childhood flashbacks that will shed light on Lily’s very troubled relationship with her father. Word is the dude was a big-time loser/crook, which makes Elliott’s casting pretty perfect if you ask me.

You agree? Sound off in the comments!

Wish they’d have brought in Tony Head from BtVS. That would have been fun.

    • John

I agree, Tony Head would have been inspired.

      • Jayme

Just for the fact that it’d be adding another Whedon-alum, I’d like that.

      • RP

Oh my god that would have been the best thing ever. :(

    • Jackie

That would have been inspired casting – no doubt about it.

    • Ally

Yeah, I guess he couldn’t do it b/c they are still making Merlin. But it would have been great casting! But I also find Chris Elliot kind of annoying.

      • ebe

i totally had my fingers crossed that it would be anthony stewart head.

god we are such buffy dorks.

      • Lucy

Chris Elliott is annoying! what a shame for HIMYM!

    • Diane

I miss Tony. What a great idea that would have been!

  • ShutUpRob

    I like Chris Elliott, but ugh — that’s a terrible match-up.
    .
    – Rob

  • ghoti

David Caruso would have been perfect.

    • Jackie

Hell no – I would boycott if he was in an episode. Ugh.

      • Brody

        Seconded.

    • ebe

only alyson hannigan could not have come out of something that ugly.

    • Michele

holy hell. I think Caruso would be extremely miscast….I can’t imagine him being funny. He’s the main reason I don’t watch CSI: Miami (I love the other 2 CSIs)…I think he is horrible, really a bad actor.

  • John

Is that crazy hand man from Scary Movie 2?

    • Levente

      Yes. Unfortunately.

  • Laura

Blech! HIMYM hasn’t been all that great this season and this just makes it worse. He made me crazy on Everyone Loves Raymond back in the day.

    • Kristina

Are you kidding? Robin 101 was a fantastic episode. Fantastic episode.

  • Levente

*groan* I cannot stand him! I’ve never found him funny and I don’t think being on the amazing show that is HIMYM will change that. This super disappoints me.

    • Angela

Levente, I couldn’t agree more with you. I never like him.

  • bhm1304

Poor Allison Hannigan plays the worst written character on this hit/miss show.

  • crispy

Great, now he can quit that job he took as a line cook at Dennys.

  • Inga

This is just fantastic casting right there. Can’t wait to see this episode!

  • T.T

hope this material gets Alyson Hannigan an emmy nom
cause lets be honest she’s the most underrated comedy actress on primetime!
she deserves an emmy way more than the ladies nominated in the supporting actress’ category this year

    • Ethan

Are you kidding? I’m sorry but she is the weakest link out of the 5. She has no comedic timing whatsoever. It’s very awkward seeing trying to be funny.

    • Jacquelyn

I have to agree with T.T…Alyson Hannigan is the reason I feel in love with this show! Marshall and Lily crack me up every episode. Without them I would have no reason to watch this show. Give Her An Emmy!!!

    • Michele

bravo! I think Alyson is fantastic in capturing the little quirks of Lily, I think she’s under-appreciated and maybe this will be a good Lily story. I, for one, am getting a little sick of seeing more Robin and not enough Lily. I’ve never liked Robin, she’s an unlikeable character. Love love love the show still!

  • Sara

Interesting how the 2 female leads both have daddy issues. Barney totally needs to exploit that more often!

    • Molly

That is kind of weird. I always imagine Lily having issues with her mom, not with her dad.

  • echocharlesierra

Chris is the “kiss of death” for a tv series…..this is the last season for sure…

  • MartinSA

what a horrid choice. I hope the producers manage to either reign the guy in or salvage the episode.

  • jules

I love Chris Elliott. He’s hilarious and he comes from a comedy dynasty. (His dad is half of Bob & Ray, and his daughter is on SNL.) I was thinking more of the Scott Bakula type as her dad, but obviously they were taking the character a different way. Chris Elliott does clueless, sleazy loser better than just about anybody.

    Its Cabin Boy!
