Ratings: 'NCIS' siblings win for CBS

Strong showings for NCIS and NCIS: Los Angeles led to another ratings victory for CBS on Tuesday night. The network’s 10 p.m. legal drama The Good Wife also held steady with nearly 13 million viewers to win the 10 p.m. hour. Shark Tank‘s season finale performed very well for ABC, with 800,000 more viewers tuning in for the final installment of the entrepreneurial reality series than last week’s showing. The Dancing With the Stars results show saw a slight bump in viewership from last week, possibly thanks to the show’s dance-medley tribute to Michael Jackson.

You see those low numbers for shows on the CW? THAT is why I get pissed with EW covers CW shows over and over again.
They could try to claim that these shows hit their demographic, or some other bs, but the truth is that this is corporate synergy plain and simple.
I love EW. I just wish they would spread their coverage out a bit more.
You know, maybe cover things like NCIS a little bit more. You might even sell a few more magazines then trying to sell to the weak base of CW watchers.

    • lori

You like watching people being murdered Frank? Does that get you off?

      • Quirky

I wouldn’t mind to see the characters of 90210 get murdered.

      • GirlCrush

Actually, lori, they don’t focus so much on the physical act. It’s more about the science and tech behind solving the crime, and the psychological state of the killer…tho Criminal Minds tends to be more about the cerebral aspects than NCIS. Both shows get DVR’d every week in my house.

      • Frank Anderson

Lori, you obviously don’t have enough brains to see that the point of post was that EW covers CW shows every chance they get, not that I like NCIS.
        Get a life!

      • Dwight

Yeah, ditto what Frank said about Lori doesn’t “have enough brains to see that the point of post.” Ha.

    • t3hdow

You do know the latest EW issue made an NCIS article, right? It’s not exactly a cover story, but hey, beggars can’t be choosers.

      • Frank Anderson

Well, I have seen EW put the words ‘Gossip Girl’ on at least five different pages in one magazine.

I don’t know if that show even has the audience to deserve even one mention. Let alone five!

  • crispy

20.6 million viewers… that’s a whole lotta old people. Take our teeth, dear, it’s time for NCIS!

    • Erika

      *waves cane*

    • GirlCrush

Yeah! And get off mah lawn!

  • lori

I like the CW shows. Who are the MORONS who watch boring derivative murder of the week crap like NCIS and The Forgotten? What, 30 murder solving shows arent enough for you people?

    • Nerwen Aldarion

Well I watch Smallville on CW and NCIS on CBS…what does that make me?

    • ww

Excuze me? Us, Morons? YOU moron!!
If what you’re saying verifies, then 21 million people are morons, and thats only NCIS viewers. Please get a life and stop thinking you’re all that.

    • Jackie

      No. I want 31.

    • Chris

      My favorite is NCIS: Topeka
      I like CSI: Anchorage
No, the best is The Mentalist: Milwaukee
Duh, it’s gotta be CSI: Oklahoma City
No way man, it’s NCIS: Alcatraz
Come on guys, we all know the best CBS show is CSI: Caracas

  • Curt

Tuesday night is pretty much a wash. I use it to watch the shows I DVR’d on Monday night which is a gold mine. The only things on Tuesday that are worth any time are “The Forgotten” (which has become one of my favorite shows) and “Melrose Place.” MP is pretty good, really, despite what some folks think. Katie Cassidy and Ashleigh Simpson alone are worth the hour!

  • Mel

The days of NCIS being for “old” people have long gone. Obviously those ratings are because the show appeals to such a large variety of people. But, hey, keep believing this quirky, hip unique show is for geezers. It’s your loss! And as for EW, they don’t “get” this show. They finally have a little article in the latest issue, and it’s it’s mostly about the LA spinoff, which is far inferior to the original. They’d prefer to give cover stories to low ratings teen shows, or Twilight for the umpteenth time.

    • JJ

quirky I’ll give you but unique? Not by a longshot. These characters have been done a million times before and TV is possitivly drowning in crime/mystery dramas.

    • Tina

Drowning in crime dramas is right! Why cant there be something different or a soap? Even reality is better than watching murders getting solved! It was boring when Murder She Wrote was on and its boring now!

      • Jackie

Desparate Housewives is a soap. As is GG, 90210 and MP.

      • Jackie

And I would like to point out I’m a different Jackie to the Jackie being villified below.

    • t3hdow

I’ll give you Twilight, but what teen shows did EW given cover stories in the last year? I can’t really put my finger on any of them. Maybe there’s a reason for that. After checking EW’s Magazine Archive (under the “More” on ew.com’s header bar), as far back as Oct. 2008, I’ve seen The Office, Fringe, House, Lost, Heroes, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and CSI. There was a three-issue block with Gossip Girl, The Hills and 90210 last Sept., but since then, nothing. I don’t think EW are that fixated on teen soaps if the last cover story was over a year ago.

  • Anonymous

Hey EW, please start doing an NCIS recap. I go to cbs.com to talk about it and all I see are postings by 11 year old girls saying OMG TONYS HOT LOL.
Also it’s the top rated show.

    • Ama

Here is your NCIS recap. Someone commits a crime. They catch their guy. I just recapped half the CBS line up. And you wonder why EW does not rush to recap these crime dramas.

      • Jackie

and yet…they recap shows like Vampire Diaries, Survivor, Jon & Kate Plus 8, which may be good shows in the opinions of some people, but dont attract anywhere near the amount of viewers that ncis does.

      • Ama

        @ Jackie

At least those shows have unique plots. There are so many crime dramas with the same formula, watching one is like watching all. I don’t see the need for crime drama recaps. How many ways can you say “there was a crime and they got the bad guy” one a week for the entire season? And thank God EW does not base their recaps on ratings. I get recaps for all the shows I love and most of the shows I watch. EW recaps the right shows.

      • Tina

OMG Jackie you are dim. What would a recap of CSI sound like? You couldnt write 2 paragraphs about that formula crap.

  • znachki

For those commenting that onyl old people watch NCIS – please note that not only did it win the timeslot – it won the 18-49 demographic with a 4.7, which is really high.

    • crispy

Well, somebody has to go turn on Granny’s TV.

      • Ama

        LOL!

  • Nerwen Aldarion

For those who complain that the reason NCIS is the number one show is because of old people…how do you explain the high 4.7 for the key demographic.

For those who say it only does well because it has no competition, it was pulling great numbers last year against American Idol, NCIS isn’t a light simple show like Biggest Loser, it has complext characters and large dramatic story plots. You need to watch more than just one episode to get the show. So again the argument doesn’t fly.

Just admit it, the reason NCIS is doing so well is because it is a good show, with fun characters and storylines that appeal to a vast majority of people from me a 19 year old student, my brother 25, my mom 48, my grandmother 72.

    • Esther Greenwood

How do I explain the high 4.7 for the key demographic? No (decent) competition.

    • Ama

Not to take anything away from NCIS’s outstanding ratings, but a 4.7 rating equals about 6 million viewers. That means around 14 million are not Adults 18-49. That is why people say it’s the old people that make the the show number one in total viewers. Also, you do a bad job of discrediting the lack of competition argument. It was pulling great numbers against Idol, but definitely no where near 4.7 in A 18-49, so now that idol is off it is better. You say NCIS is not a simple show like Biggest Loser, and I agree. Look at the regular competition, Shark Tank, Biggest loser, Hell’s kitchen. 90120 is insignificant. It is the only complex drama in the hour so how is that not an advantage. I don’t think NCIS is successful only because of its competition but your argument is faulty.

    • Tina

How many marines can they possibly murder?

  • Karla

Totally agree with you, NCIS is an excellent show, as well as Criminal Minds but neither get much coverage in EW? Why?

  • MikerMan

NCIS is easy to watch. It’s not very difficult to follow. It doesn’t stimulate thought. It has a formula and it works based on that. It’s perfect for people who want to watch an easy, unoriginal show. That’s why it gets huge ratings. The Average Joe American! Same reason why Transformers 2 did so well this summer even though the movie was terrible. And I love the Transformers and liked the first movie!!!

    • crizzo109

      spot on!

  • NYLA

The new MP is damn good and actually written better than the original. I hope the CW stands behind it long enough for it to find a audience.

    • Tina

Its way better written than the original, which was camp.

  • Big D

With the exception of Smallville and Supernatural, I find the CW unwatchable. I didn’t start watching NCIS until last year when The Mentalist lead me into the world of CBS procedurals. And it is an awesome world indeed. Now am totally hooked on NCIS, NCIS: LA, Numb3rs and CSI: Miami.

  • Rob

I expected higher for the ALCS, 90210 get 2.4 isn’t bad for that network, the numbers that Melrose did is bad for that network.

  • Ricki

Does it really matter what the age of the viewer is? I would think that the 20.6 million number speaks for itself.

  • Justin

GO CBS! NCIS and NCIS:LA are great shows. I’m also liking the Forgotten. The changeup with using volunteers instead of cops or feds is a refreshing change, although I love my procedurals.
