It may not be a paranormal event, but it’s cool and unusual: Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor has teamed up with Fringe for a new promo spot, EW.com has learned. The spot, which debuts Thursday during Game 5 of the American League Championship Series, features a reworking of the Nine Inch Nails song “Zero-Sum” by Reznor, who recites lines of dialogue from Fringe‘s William Bell (Leonard Nimoy) over the music. So, how did the freaky drama series secure the services of Reznor? After Fox’s marketing department showed the Fringe producers a version of the promo that used “Zero-Sum,” series exec producer Jeff Pinkner simply asked a nearby Reznor acquaintance—that’d be co-creator J.J. Abrams—if the NIN musician might be interested in a collaboration. One email later, Reznor was on the case. “We offered him compensation, and he said, ‘No, no, I just want to have fun and be part of something cool,’” says Pinkner, adding: “How often do you get the chance to work with somebody like that?”
Reznor wound up revamping the song in his mobile studio while on tour, and he even came up with the idea of “embedding” one of the show’s glyphs in the music. (Hint: Examine the song’s sound waves on a computer.) Now for the big question: Might Reznor pop up in an episode of Fringe? “If he wants to come act on the show, that’s not tit for tat—that’s an open invitation, and we made that known to him,” says Pinkner. Any ideas on what he may play? “Well, his head would probably end up exploding,” deadpans Pinkner. “There’d be some uncomfortable biology in there one way or another.”

Move the promo to a player to all countries! Get with the program EW!
Love Fringe! Love the promo!
LMAO @ the comment about having Trent’s head explode, made my day (not that I would EVER want that to happen)…:)
Booo! I can’t view it either LOL
But it’s great to hear the news that they’ll be a new version of such a great NIN track for the show’s promo.
I can’t hear anything I just got home from a club..but this should be deluxe tomorrow when I listen to it..thanks for sharing
that was AWESOME!!!
Get your sound recording software/hardware heated up. Play and record seconds :50 through :58 in your recorder of choice. Now, take your short sound clip that you just recorded, and save it to your hard drive somewhere you’ll remember.
Next, get a visual playback plugin called a “spectrograph”. You can find these for lots of media players, including ITunes, Winamp, etc.
Now, once you have the plugin installed, play back your short audio sample from the end of this promo. If you do so with the spectrograph plugin running, you will see exactly why I typed all this =) you may have to mess with the settings on the spectrograph plugin to get it to work properly. Thank you Trent once again =)
WWWWWOOOOOOOOWWWWWW thanks sooo much, its friggin amazing ^^ do you have your whole setup running through a spectograph? its amazing
That just meshed my two favorite things: Fringe and NIN–I can’t believe it! That’s so awesome!!!!!!
Trent would be great in Fringe – just has to act like he did in the I’m Afraid of Americans video and he could be one of the ‘soldiers from another universe’ no problem!
Does it annoy anyone else when TR is referred to as “Nine Inch Nails frontman”?
I wouldn’t say annoying, but it is misleading, since NIN never really was a solid band. Sure, Trent Reznor has collaborators helping him produce the music, and he brings musicians when he’s on tour, but NIN’s never been an official band. I suppose ‘frontman’ should be replaced by ‘lead composer’ or something to that effect.
WHAT???? Tren Reznor IS nine inch nails. read a little more and you’ll know. he never had “collaborators” to make music, just to play instruments. but he is the head and heart of NIN. and NIN is an OFFICIAL BAND. (ignorance is ok but not when an opinion is been given…)
You are correct. All songs written, performed and produced by Trent Reznor. Until ‘The Slip’ that is, where performance credits were given to the live band. I didn’t know anything about this show until I was watching football this weekend and heard ‘Zero Sum’ and saw the promo. JJ is awesome and the songs used so far are beyond excellent. Gonna watch for the first time next time it’s on. Also, does anyone know who’s producing Trent’s ‘Year Zero’ show on HBO? I’d heard it was David Fincher….but is it JJ Abrams?
