'Smallville' exec to fans: 'We're pushing for a 10th season!'

Tags: , News

smallville-clark-louis_lSmallville hasn’t even crossed the midway point of season 9 and already talk of a possible 10th season is heating up — and not just among fans. “We are really, really pushing for season 10,” executive producer Kelly Souders tells me. “We really hope it happens.”

Although the show lost a good chunk of viewers since moving to that ratings kryptonite known as Friday night, the drop-off hasn’t been nearly as disastrous as some had predicted. And Souders believes that the numbers will rise as the season progresses. “I think the word still isn’t out there that we’re on Friday nights. So if people keep tuning in and telling their friends about it, I think [a 10th season] is quite likely.”

The uncertainty surrounding the show’s future has proved challenging as Souders and her fellow writers begin to map out the second half of the season. Are they approaching a season finale or a series finale? “It’s something that we faced last year, too,” she says. “To try and break two different endings for a season kind of puts you at cross-purposes a little bit. For one, you’ll rev things up, and for another, you’re trying to bring everything to the finish line. But we’re really planning on breaking a season finale and not a series finale.”

As for whether we’ll get a glimpse of Clark in his iconic blue, red and yellow suit by the show’s conclusion, Souders says, “We think Smallville from the get-go was about how a young man turns into Superman. And it’s really about the journey getting there. I can’t make any promises, but if it was ever going to happen, it would be at the very end.”

What say you, Smallville fans? Do you think the show has a 10th season in it? Sound off below! (Additional reporting by Keith Staskiewicz)

Yes! I want totally want a Season 10 but only if it’s the last season. Plan it from the beginning as the last season and go out with a bang! Plus, we’d get that elusive 200th episode, that’s gotta be a big one!

    • jordan

I agree! I’m a huge Smallville fan and I realize that there has to be an end, but the end really needs to be tenth season. Even if it is a half-season with the 200th episode as the finale, season 10 is a must. And I expect an Smallville EW cover when Smallville has its 200th episode! :) Or at least for the series finale. Few shows make this landmark, and few deserve it as much as Smallville.
I feel like if the show goes any further than a tenth season, it’s just stalling Clark’s journey. If they want to go further, that’s what spin-offs are for. There are endless possibilities for Smallville spin-offs (Justice League(/Watchtower), Superman, Green Arrow, Flash, Aquaman (bring back the original!), etc.). Honestly, though, I don’t know if I trust Dawn Ostroff with any of those. Justice League spin-off on a major network (hey, NBC, you’re desperate, aren’t you?) could be very successful with the right people behind it (AKA- Smallville people).

Thanks for the info, Ausiello. New most of it from TVGuide, but nice to get a little expansion on some of it! Any Smallville coverage makes for a happy Jordan.

I’d also like to say how happy I was to go to the EW home page and see this as the main story :) .

    • phd

agree…this is over but it deserves a proper send off.

      • Emma

I hate that so few CW (and previous WB) shows got to end right because the writers didn’t know whether they were going to get canceled or not. It seems incredibly inconsiderate to the viewers who have followed the show with such loyalty for so many years.

    • andypanda

      Absolutely agree 100%!!!

      • Joel

Yep totally (like with Gilmore Girls). I agree I’d love a tenth season to get to 200 episodes. That’s quite a feat for ANY show to get to.

    • kenneth evans

Yes, I think Smallville deserves a 10th season, this season has been better than the last 3. I for one and still interested and look forward to another season or 2.

    • AJ Simon

This is stupid beyond words, he is already a grown man , the actor is in his 30′s. Passing off as a college student is a bit of a stretch.

All of these winks that is given in the show about his future are lame and show lazy writing. The show telling about his days in Smallville was a great idea but should have been limited to oh, I don’t know his days in SMALLVILLE. Secondly, it should have been only for a max of 3 seasons =, ideally with 12-13 episodes per season. Tell an effective character building story. Since season 1, it has become a cringe inducing bad joke of a show. Great idea, poor execution

      • CLOISFOREVER

Alright, I’m not a big superman comic book fan, but from all the mythos I’ve read, wasn’t clark Kent in his mid or late 20s when he started out as Superman? Even though Tom Welling is in his 30s, he doesn’t look it. He’s never looked his age. He looks as if he’s MAX, 25. In the show, Clark is only just 22. Not a man yet, in my standards. He’s very much close to it though. So, I don’t think your statement is valid or solid enough to apply a reason why Smallville should have ended from long ago. I mean, look at Bruce Wayne. How long was it until HE became Batman? And if it WAS such a joke of a show, then how is it that it has lasted 9 season and that MANY expect for it to go all the way until 8 seasons??? Also, that it has been given more than a handful of awards? Not to mention, being nominated for Emmys? Like I said, your statement is not solid; therefore, have Smallville end at season 10!!! :D

You sir have no right to comment on this, the rest of us here are actual fans, you sir are a unworthy critic. Keep your comments to your self

I have watched Smallville for nine years and I am a seasoned, committed fan. The acting, writing, editing, and cinematography are fantastic still.
      As for a tenth season….

I must say, the direction the show has been taking this season, has me very excited to say the least. I think I am more involved than I have been in a couple seasons and I am more in love with the show than ever!
Bring it on this fan says!

      • DTS

Absolutely agree – I’ve watched each episode and the subplots driving this season have me hooked. A 10th season certainly would be great – especially if we can somehow bring Lex back in for an episode or two….

  • Tyson

BTW, where’s your actual Smallville interview???

  • DJ Doena

They should wrap it up nicely and give it a proper ending instead of protracting it until they get cancelled. CK isn’t becoming S anyway, so what’s the point?

  • John T.

Glad to say I gave up on this show towards end of last season. It was really getting ludicrous. Lois and Clark is so much better.

  • Jenny

I don’t watch Smallville, but if I did, I’d be super ecstatic! This is great news for Smallville fans. :)

    • shailee

i hope they get another season. its a great show, great entertainment, and a wonderful work to watch each week! im only sorry i started watching so late!

      • @TweedleV

the begining seasons were awesome, lately it has gotten a bit repeatative, but this season and last season where pretty good

  • Chazzbot

Holy mother of frak, why? Stop the madness! The show has become ridiculous and needs to be retired. Put on the suit, already!

    • Jess

Do u still watch it cause if u don’t don’t comment this the best season so far!

    • tvgirl48

I’ll admit, I still watch it but it’s more like a trainwreck I can’t take my eyes off of. The writing is horribly hilarious, the characters are incredibly unlikeable, there is zero continuity, the plot is forced because it’s confined to the mythos, and the writers have no idea how journalism works. These days it’s just a guilty pleasure for me.

      • Jason Reybar

No offense, but what you say makes no sense. Continuity is surprisingly good for a show in its ninth season. Little bits like (spoilers) Doomsday being the second traveler were hinted at as early as two seasons ago, if not earlier. And the plot being confined to the mythos? If anything, Superman fans dislike Smallville for NOT perfectly kowtowing to the mythos. Last season they killed off a quote-unquote mythos character! So yeah, not really sure if you’ve watched enough to really judge.

  • RJ

Oh god, please let this show end already!

  • brynna

I super hope so! Clark still needs to fly!

  • natalie

Smallville will face a real challenge in November, as Fox replaces its horrible Friday night lineup with reruns of shows that people actually like. But a CW show shouldn’t be judged by sweeps. And all these years later, Smallville is still putting out the best show on Friday for fans like me. Nice work, guys! Get that tenth season!

  • tadeo

si!!!! queremos season 10….so many years watching the show and finally we need to get to see the read & blue suit.!!!!!!! we need the season 10th….pleaseee.

  • S

Yes! Bring on Season 10! Come on CW…just one more!

    • michelekamay

Yeah, CW, please let us say goodbye to Clark and Smallville in a tenth and last season, please!!!

      • michelekamay

I’ll add: a tenth season, then Tom Welling as Superman on the big screen!!! Like SATC!

  • Neal Bailey

Go for another season at least. Smallville is the best show on TV

  • Nathan

I can’t wait for more Smallville. Last season was epic, and this season is shaping up to be legendary.

    • earl

great show, great cast, great chemistry. we all deserve the tenth season.

  • monkeysilog

I’m not sure if Smallville had a Season 7.5, 8, or 9 in it, but I’ll keep watching if they keep making them. You couldn’t ask her why Metropolis has an overabundance of fog machines?

  • Jo

The show has had its ups and downs and some holes need to be filled but I’m so in love with the characters I would be for a 10th season. I’m 26yrs old with a child and I’m not ashamed to say I’ve been a huge fan since the pilot. ;)
