This just in: NBC picks up 'Community,' 'Parks and Recreation,' and 'Mercy' for full seasons

NBC has ordered full seasons of rookie series Community (cool!) and Mercy (meh), as well as second-year comedy Parks and Recreation (woo-hoo!).

The back-nine pickups come despite middling ratings for all three show, although Mercy has perked up somewhat in recent weeks.  As Peacock president Angela Bromstad points out, “[Mercy] has found a dedicated audience and continues to build in the ratings. We’ve seen future episodes and we’re confident Mercy can be a strong player for us.”

'Breaking Bad' scoop: 'Damages' creep is Walt's new assistant!

Categories: Breaking Bad

breaking-bad_lAre Walt and Jessie going their separate ways on Breaking Bad? Sure looks that way since Damages evildoer David Costabile is joining the AMC drama as Walt’s (Bryan Cranston) new assistant, Gale.

Described as an eager student and a brilliant chemist, Gale is the antithesis of Jessie (Aaron Paul) in that he’s more interested in the magic of chemistry than getting rich. READ FULL STORY »

This just in: HBO renews 'In Treatment'

Categories: In Treatment

in-treatment_lHBO has renewed In Treatment for a third season after closing a deal with lead shrink Gabriel Byrne. But that’s not the big news. No, the big news is that actor-turned-writer Dan Futterman and his TV producer-wife Anya Epstein (Tell Me You Love Me) have taken over as co-showrunners.

Production on the drama will resume in early 2010 with the third season slated to premiere later in the year.

Casting is underway for Byrne’s new crop of patients. As always, referrals are greatly appreciated.

Ratings: Baseball, 'Survivor' dominate

Baseball playoffs and a round of repeats shook up the ratings board last night. Survivor was up a solid 1 million viewers over last week, and freshman series FlashForward posted gains as well, bringing in an additional 700,000 audience members. NBC’s comedy bloc saw slight improvements over last week, particularly in the 9:00 slot with The Office and 30 Rock both adding 400,000 viewers over. CBS’s procedural repeats gave ABC the advantage at 9 p.m., and Grey’s dominated its timeslot, particularly in the 18-49 demographic.

Bon Jovi + 'Burn Notice' + 'Psych' = 'Super' new USA spot

Planning to watch the premiere of USA Network’s White Collar tonight? Word of advice: Don’t fast-forward through the commercials — particularly if you’re a Bon Jovi fan. At some point during the show’s 72-minute episode (beginning at 10 pm/ET), the network will premiere the “Superman Tonight” track from Bon Jovi’s upcoming album The Circle over a nifty new character brand promo starring such USA MVPs as Jeffrey Donovan, Gabrielle Anwar, James Roday, Dule Hill, and Jeff Goldblum. This just in: An exclusive first look at the nifty spot is after the jump! (But you should still watch the commercials tonight. And then immediately go buy all the products advertised. If you don’t, the TV business may die and no one wants that.) READ FULL STORY »

Exclusive: Simpson and Egglesfield out in 'Melrose Place' shake-up

Categories: Melrose Place

ausiello-melrose-place-ashley_lTwo months into its run, The CW’s ratings-challenged (but creatively-smokin’) Melrose Place reboot is about to undergo a major renovation. For starters, Ashlee Simpson-Wentz and Colin Egglesfield have been let go (they’ll last air in January), and the “Who Killed Sydney?” mystery is being wrapped up in December. Then, in addition to Heather Locklear’s Amanda, several new characters will be introduced and the show will take on a lighter, more fun vibe. Here, in an exclusive interview, exec producers Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer explain why they’re fixing a series that many (myself included) felt wasn’t broken and tease what’s ahead for Melrose 2.0 3.0. Exclusive: Trent Reznor lends voice, revamped Nine Inch Nails track to 'Fringe' promo

Categories: Music, Television

Trent-Reznor-Fringe_l[1]It may not be a paranormal event, but it’s cool and unusual: Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor has teamed up with Fringe for a new promo spot, EW.com has learned. The spot, which debuts Thursday during Game 5 of the American League Championship Series, features a reworking of the Nine Inch Nails song “Zero-Sum” by Reznor, who recites lines of dialogue from Fringe‘s William Bell (Leonard Nimoy) over the music. So, how did the freaky drama series secure the services of Reznor? After Fox’s marketing department showed the Fringe producers a version of the promo that used “Zero-Sum,” series exec producer Jeff Pinkner simply asked a nearby Reznor acquaintance—that’d be co-creator J.J. Abrams—if the NIN musician might be interested in a collaboration. One email later, Reznor was on the case. “We offered him compensation, and he said, ‘No, no, I just want to have fun and be part of something cool,’” says Pinkner, adding: “How often do you get the chance to work with somebody like that?”

Reznor wound up revamping the song in his mobile studio while on tour, and he even came up with the idea of “embedding” one of the show’s glyphs in the music. (Hint: Examine the song’s sound waves on a computer.) Now for the big question: Might Reznor pop up in an episode of Fringe? “If he wants to come act on the show, that’s not tit for tat—that’s an open invitation, and we made that known to him,” says Pinkner. Any ideas on what he may play? “Well, his head would probably end up exploding,” deadpans Pinkner. “There’d be some uncomfortable biology in there one way or another.”

Here’s your exclusive first look at the Fringe promo:

Ask Ausiello: Spoilers on 'Lost,' 'House, 'Grey's,' 'NCIS,' 'Glee,' and more!

ask-ausiello_lGot a scoop request? An anonymous tip you’re dying to share? Just want to say hi? You can send any/all of the above to ausielloscoop@ew.com

Question: Is Emilie de Ravin going to be back on Lost for the whole season or just a few episodes? And will we get to see what happened to her? —Jared
Ausiello:
The answer to both of your questions is a resounding yeppers. Better prepare yourself though. My Lost mole says season 6 will showcase “a version of Claire we’ve never seen before — a Rousseau-esque version.” We’ll be in need of a Rousseau fix since the real version will be MIA. According to a Lost insider, the French Lady’s portrayer, Mira Furlan, turned down the show’s request to return for the final season due to a “prior overseas commitment.” Anyone know how you say “big bag-o-nuts” in français?

Question: I’m tired of people bitching about Gossip Girl being in a creative slump. I’m loving this season. Got scoop? —Alex
Ausiello:
I’m (mostly) loving this season, too. The Chuck-Blair stuff continues to be immensely satisfying. And Hilary Duff isn’t nearly as annoying as I thought she’d be. On the scoop front, there’s a big Blair-Serena blow-up coming. The frenemies will definitely be on the outs for a little bit. READ FULL STORY »

Exclusive: Fox to bench 'Dollhouse' during sweeps

Categories: Dollhouse

dollhouse_lThis isn’t a good sign: Sources confirm to me exclusively that Fox has decided to pull Dollhouse off the schedule during November sweeps. Joss Whedon’s ratings-challenged drama is expected to return in December and air back-to-back episodes on Friday night.

Bottom line: Barring a ratings miracle, Dollhouse will be shut down for good after it completes its current 13-episode order.

Rebecca-romijn-OConnell_lIs there anything more magical than a casting scoop that breaks the proverbial fourth wall? I think not.

Case in point: Sources confirm to me exclusively that Jerry O’Connell has booked a multi-episode arc opposite his real-life wife, Rebecca Romijn, on ABC’s increasingly addictive drama Eastwick. READ FULL STORY »

'Friday Night Lights': Exec producer Jason Katims teases season 4

Categories: Television

friday-night-lights_lAre you ready for some football? No, not Monday Night Football—we’re talking Friday Night Lights! Given that season 4 kicks off just one week from tonight (Oct. 28 at 9 p.m. on DIRECTV; NBC will air these episodes in 2010), FNL exec producer Jason Katims offers up the following teasers to get you fired up. Let us issue a SPOILER ALERT and proceed:

• Dillon will live every week like it’s Rivalry Week now that East Dillon High School has reopened. “The whole idea of this season is about this town being divided in two because of this new team,” says Katims. “And over the course of the season, the lines are literally drawn between these two teams. At times it’s funny but it eventually gets really ugly.”

• Coach Eric Taylor (Kyle Chandler) will be challenged as he assumes the reins of the East Dillon Lions, who aren’t at the top of their game yet. “He’s got to figure out how to make something out of nothing,” says Katims. “It’s tougher than he can even imagine because with all the obstacles he’s had in the past, it came with a group of football players who all wanted to please this guy. When he walked into a room, they took a knee. These guys don’t…. It becomes less about winning a championship [than] winning a game.” READ FULL STORY »
