Scoop: TNT may expand 'Southland' episodes

Michael-Cudlitz_lMore good news on the Southland front: On the heels of this morning’s confirmation that TNT will run all 13 Southland episodes (including the six season 2 episodes that NBC never aired), comes word that the cable net may pad the seven season 1 eppys with never-before-seen bonus footage.

According to my go-to guy at Southland, Michael Cudlitz, “It’s my understanding that the actual episodes will have more airtime on TNT, so I believe they will be going back in and [adding] content. They’ll have the opportunity, and, in my opinion the need, to open up the [initial seven] episodes a little bit.”

Cudlitz, meanwhile, is optimistic that TNT will order additional episodes beyond those 13. “I really do feel like it’s going to do fantastic,” he says. “It may even be a bigger hit this time around.”

Until a final decision is made (likely in January), the cast will remain under contract. And what about the show’s sets? “We only had two,” Cudlitz says with a laugh. “We were always shooting on the street. And as far as I know, they’re not packing up the city of Los Angeles and putting it away, so I think we’ll be fine.

“I’m just really happy that the show gets a chance to sink or swim based on what we’ve done creatively,” he adds, “and it’s not some arbitrary business decision.”

Amen, brother.

The show belonged on cable anyway. I hope it does well there.

      I concur!

    • Heather

I totally agree! So happy they listened to the fans!

    • Belle

Absolutely! Anything with edge and good quality writing belongs on cable and not network television. Network do not know a good thing if it smacked them in the face.

Sometimes things do turn out well.

That’s FANTASTIC news!! :) I can’t wait to see the 6 new eps. Heck, I can’t wait for them to start showing any of the eps again. I’m going to pushing everyone I know to watch.

So happy that TNT picked it up. And it will be extra shades of awesome if extra footage is edited into those first 7 eps! :-)

    • Dug

Absoultely agree! I hope that the additional footage adds an extra special grittiness to this already awesome show!

Yes! A good show is able to escape the reverse-Midas touch of NBC! Here’s hoping for a long run on TNT!

I hope it does well and wins some Emmy’s. NBC has cancelled so many other shows that have gone on to be big hits (NCIS, anyone?) – hopefully this keeps the trend going.

NCIS was never on NBC,it is probably JAG you are thinking of.

Southland is much better suited to TNT, I like the idea of added extra parts too.
I am very happy to hear this news.

I’m really happy to hear this. Network dramas have to pack so much into so little time and sometimes an extra scene here or there would actually round out the episode a little better. Sometimes a scene is cut for good reason but I’m really interested to see how the added scenes affect the final product if they do indeed add some back in.

With the move to cable, I hope all the “bleeps” will be removed and the cast will be allowed to use the language in the script. That turned me off and stopped me watching. Otherwise it looked like a very good show.

Sadly, we’re apparently too immature to hear the word “f**k” on basic cable, so I doubt they’ll be able to remove all the bleeps. I didn’t mind them myself- I found it less distracting than people constantly saying “screw you” or “I don’t give a damn” when their character would obviously use something stronger.

This is great GREAT news….Im am so f**kin HAPPY!!!!!(can you tell i love this show)

TNT DOES know drama! They have picked up a great show with huge potential given the depth of talent in the cast, writing and production.
Looking forward to expanded season 1 episodes and to finally getting to see the new ones.
