How in the heck do “they” know what I’m DVRing? Am I missing something? I DVR everything except ANTM ’cause it isn’t worth it but I still don’t want to miss it. NCIS, Castle, White Collar, Criminal Minds, Glee, Chopped, and many more. Thank goodness my DVR can do 4 at time. I think the next list should be, “What do you DVR but eventually erase without watching it?”.
Your DVR is hooked up to either cable, TiVo, or satellite and “they” – the cable or satellite companies – have actually been backtracking those numbers for years. They download ‘em from the hookup or satellite just like we download the programming. (Supposedly “aggregate” numbers in marketing/ratings-speak.) It’s only been in the last couple of years that Nielsen has caught up (somewhat) with the technology. Now the question is when will they start tracking online viewing in a serious way? Those numbers are there too – just like tracking hits to website, which is also, BTW, another way the nets do track web numbers informally. If I’m not mistaken, Fox was first on that bandwagon with The X-Files, arguably the first TV-Web phenom.
I meant to add that social networking is becoming a big influence as well, possibly even more than straight-up web. And they are also starting to pay attention to discussion on big entertainment sites and blogs. Like this one. Too bad they weren’t doing that yet when we still had Veronica Mars and some other bygone shows that would’ve had more love if the nets were paying better attention to the web fans a few years ago.
annie, do you know if or why they don’t count online viewings of shows as viewership? I haven’t owned a tv for years but i watch about 15 hours of tv each week! everyone i know uses hulu when they want to see a specific show, and only turns on the tv when they’re bored on the couch.
I regularly record Castle, The Good Wife, Glee & Grey’s in case I am otherwise disposed and cannot watch them in real time. But I record with a VCR, so I guess I am not one of the above statistics. Yes, I am a dinosaur.
Surprised to see Private Practice so highly recorded. That show has come out of nowhere to become a big hit.
I Love Private Practice!
