'Big Bang Theory' exclusive: Christine Baranski returns!

Is Sheldon finally going to experience a big bang in more than theory? That’s at least what I’m hoping will happen when Christine Baranski reprises Read the full post.

after monday’s episode, baranski needs to team up with sheldon’s father to see the fireworks fly. who could be good? billy bob thornton? jeff foxworthy? maybe tim mcgraw -git r’ done?

  • andrew m

Sheldon and Marianne ( ask your Mom if you dont know) maybe a did they or didnt they b plotline and never get it answered. It would drive them all, esp Penny, crazy, and leave Sheldon as he is.

  • DCTVGal

I usually like Christine. But I saw nothing special in her role the last time. All she did was talk between clenched teeth and mumble abour going to the bathroom. Way to go Emmy.

Sheldon is very happy as an asexual character. Please leave it that way. I’d hate for these two to get together for a throw away ep and then lose a great quality in Sheldon for the long run.

  • Okie in Texas

I’ve never been clear on if Sheldon’s father is alive or not. I’ve always fancied him being played by Matthew Cowles though. If so, it would be great to see him come on and woo Leonard’s mom.

    • Sue

      Sheldon’s father is deceased.

  • 100 Girls, 100 Days

I really, really don’t understand the love for this show

  • Derek Brunell

I’m really sorry they scrapped the lesbian storyline between her and Claire Meade on Ugly Betty. She’s such a good actress.

  • Darth Stig

Ok, Sheldon comes off as thinking sex is for lesser beings, so it isn’t neccessary. That being said, Christine Baranski…who wouldn’t? In a word, YES! :P

  • jennifer

I think it would be AWESOME!!!!!!!! Sheldon is NOT asexual–NO one is. He is just extremely logical and repressed emotionally. Think first episode, when there was a reference to a certain implied activity on his part…

    • jennifer

Plus, it would be hilarious! Can you imagine? They would probably map it all out, act by act, scene by scene, then take detailed notes as they were doing it…

    • Lynn

      No one is asexual? Wow.

      • jennifer

        Not unless they’re an amoeba.

    • Lynn

Jennifer, asexual orientation is not the same as asexual reproduction. Shockingly, are allowed to have multiple definitions. Asexuality as an orientation (alternatively called nonsexuality, though that particular terminology is not as widely used) is not only legitimate, but well documented just like any other sexual identity (such as homosexual, bisexual, pansexual, etc)
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asexuality

      • Sue

        There’s this too,
        http://www.buzzle.com/articles/the-psychology-of-asexuality.html

AND this quote from series co-creator/executive producer Bill Prady,
“I have a hard time imagining Sheldon with anyone in a romantic connection! Even his friends aren’t sure what his “deal” is.”

      • jennifer

But having a hard time imagining doesn’t preclude the possiblity of it happening!!! And if no one really knows what his “deal” is, that leaves it open for anything… I think his “deal” is just that he has very poor social skills, as a result of his intellectual superiority-induced social isolation growing up. Doesn’t mean he can’t change, and grow.

    • Lynn

Jennifer, first of all, please don’t say “grow” as though asexuality is just a phase, or that one can only grow as a person through sexual or romantic contact with others. Second, Chuck Lorre has said (repeatedly) that Sheldon is not interested in relationships. At Comic Con he flat out stated (and not for the first time, I might add) that Sheldon was not interested in relationships because his heart and soul are in the sciences.

      • Liz

But you are speaking as if it is conclusive that Sheldon is ‘asexual’. Sorry, but that is your opinion because it has not been. And there IS another way to interpret the scenes. The Sheldon/Penny Shippers think he is more of a young boy who hasn’t grown in that way yet. He’s ‘opted out’ right NOW because he doesn’t understand anything about it. And whatever Chuck Lorre said, I don’t think he can deny what potential comedy gold awaits in Penny and Sheldon.

      • Lynn

And you, Liz, are speaking as if it’s conclusive that there is gold to be found in that kind of relationship. Personally, I don’t see it. Given writer’s stance on him not being interested, and the position of Cuoco and Parsons (and Kunal) that they see the characters more as siblings (in Cuoco’s case stating repeatedly that the two of them in a relationship would be a “nightmare”), it’s logical to assume they don’t see a romantic relationship between them as gold (or likely) either. They may or may not change their mind about this in the future, but it doesn’t change the fact that this is how they are being written and acted *at the moment*

However, you’re right in saying you can interpret things however you want. My comments had nothing to do with the validity of different interpretation. My comments were specifically about the definition of asexuality (which Jennifer showed an insulting lack of understanding for in her dismissal of it as a genuine orientation) and a brief comment regarding the official position of the showrunners, again, *at the moment*

      • Liz

True, I am. But I am not only basing it on my opinion alone, also that of a number of critic reviews that have not had ONE kind thing to say about the *current* Leonard/Penny relationship, while some have even gone as far as to say that they miss the Sheldon/Penny interaction INSTEAD. In addition, I’m also looking at the sheer number of fans on various message boards etc. in support of Sheldon/Penny versus Leonard/Penny. No, perhaps not the ENTIRE fanbase of TBBT wants romance but a rather large chunk seem to deem the Sheldon/Penny scenes as one of the main reasons they tune in. And within THOSE numbers, my guess is at least 75-80% DO want romance to evolve between them. But take that as you will.

And again, I don’t give a hoot what the creators or actors (who have no say in the way it’s written anyway) are reciting about the relationship right now. The ratings and reviews will tell the creators/writers everything they need to know (especially after this Monday’s episode methinks.) It’s up to them whether they choose to run with it.

And actually, speaking of Monday’s episode, re; the creators “stance” on the subject: If they are so against the Penny/Sheldon possibility at the moment, as you say, do you not find it at all strange that a Sheldon/Penny centric episode (with sexual undertones to boot!) as this Monday’s will have, is airing during November Sweeps at the precise time the show is trying to compete with other networks FOR ratings? Because I certainly would if your theory were correct.

Anyway, I’m tired of debating this topic over and over. Let us both enjoy the show as we enjoy it and we’ll see what happens.

      • Lynn

First, one can adore Sheldon and Penny’s interaction (and dislike the relationship of Penny and Leonard) and not believe that Sheldon and Penny should get together romantically or sexually. Second, you shouldn’t estimate statistics on random internet samplings, there is nothing concrete to prove the majority of the fanbase feels strongly one way or the other. With that said, my experience on the internet has been contrary to yours, I have not found many people who believe this strongly. The majority of this thread, for example. t-b-b-t.com, television without pity, communities on LJ (with the exception of paradox) are other examples. So it appears our anecdotal evidence seems to cancel each other out. Third, I don’t find any sexual overtones in the upcoming episode. One sided nudity doesn’t always equate to sexual (though Kaley Cuoco in the shower would be considered a ratings grabber, regardless of the context), nor do either of them seem particularly pleased to be in such a position (rather, Sheldon again looked uncomfortable and Penny annoyed that she must turn to him for help while Leonard isn’t around). Much like with Leonard’s mother, the scene in the previews seems to play as though the humor is found again in Sheldon’s disinterest in a thing that most men in his position would be thrilled for.

      • Reese

LoL I love Penny and Sheldon’s interactions, it’s one of my favorite parts of the show. And I dislike Leonard and Penny as a couple (though I think they have potential, I’m just not feeling it at the moment). But that doesn’t mean I want Penny and Sheldon to get together. People can like platonic relationships! Just because you want them together doesn’t mean you should project your preference onto every critic, unless they’ve said for fact that they want to see a romantic relationship. I have yet to read any (aside from a few small fan bloggers) say this, actually.

And Liz, maybe you should reread your comment on interpretations and not stating opinions like fact. You see next week as being full of sexual undertones, but that does not mean that everyone does. So you should refrain from speaking about it as if it’s a fact that this is what is happening and is the showrunner’s intention with the episode. ESPECIALLY when it hasn’t even aired and we haven’t seen how it is going to play out

      • Liz

First, you both massively misread what I wrote about the critics. I said that perhaps NOT all want romance but that they DO enjoy the Penny/Sheldon scenes. Period. I’m not suggesting that everyone who does not ‘ship LP wants SP together in a romantic way. But I did say that WITHIN the large chunk of people liking those SP scenes, there ARE a large number who DO want romance. And yes, this is a fact as I converse with at least 100 out of the 1500 I know of on a daily basis!
Please do not put words in my mouth. I never said that ALL reviews/reviewers want them together romantically, rather that SP *IS* where the interest lies as opposed to LP based on the critiques that I have read. And I’ll have you know that I do not only read the “good PS reviews” I want to know what everyone is saying so I make sure I research more than just what I want to hear. So I think it is you both who need to re-read what I wrote.

And as for the sexual undertones; I’m jaw-dropped here. Are you *seriously* trying to tell me that CBS ISN’T promoting this episode WITHOUT that on their mind??? Uh, sorry but YEAH, RIIIIIGHT! You cannot have a character touch a female character’s BREAST on a sitcom (and make a JOKE out of it!) without the audience automatically jumping to sex. It is part of television culture (and I suppose mass culture-culture at that!) as it has been for 50-odd years and there’s no changing it now.
I’d like for either of you to give me one example on a sitcom where something similar has happened and we WEREN’T supposed to laugh at it BECAUSE of those undertones. Hint: you won’t find one. I agree that how we interpret the scene as a whole is up to you but not this promo!

Anyway, this argument is becoming redundant. I don’t feel like debating this any further when it’s clear that neither party is going to come to an agreement.

I’m proposing that we agree to disagree and I hope you’ll accept.

      • Lynn

First of all, I will say I apologize if I misread your comment re: critics. However, I still believe that your sampling of fans is likely skewed in favor of your interests (as mine would be as well), so I will repeat my comment earlier that there is no concrete proof that the fanbase sways heavily for or against this particular ship. Unless we were to conduct a blind sample of nielsen viewers (which is an inherently flawed system in and of itself, though more accurate than random internet polling), we’re likely to never have remotely accurate data on the subject.

Second, I am seriously saying that when I watch that scene in the preview I do not see sexual undertones. Because to me, sexual undertones requires lust/desire from one or both of the characters, which I do not see in either (rather, when Penny realized where his hand was, her face read to me as one of disgust and annoyance, and his face read to me of uncomfortable awkwardness). Whether other TV shows succumb to over sexualized tropes or not has nothing to do with the way this show is run, nor does it have anything to do with what I see in this show. Because though I find the show suffers from a lot of sitcom cliches, the characters have never fully felt to me like cliches themselves. You do not have to believe that. You are free to see all the sexual innuendo that you want. I’ve said repeatedly you are free to interpret whatever you want, but please do not tell me that I must see this promo way you do. That you can be so hypocritical to say I should not claim definitively that Sheldon is asexual (though I never actually made such a claim; defending asexuality as a legitimate orientation and backing up my opinion with likeminded quotes from the showrunners is not the same as suggesting you or anyone else MUST fall in line) while telling me I MUST see a promo the way you do (which again, I do not) is frustrating at best and reason enough to end this, as you are clearly incapable of having a rational discussion that allows for multiple points of view other than your own.

      • Liz

        To Lynn and Reese:

I want to apologize for the tone of my above post. I was over-tired and responded sharply when I didn’t honestly didn’t intend to start a heated debate here. I still stand by my arguments but I do want to respectfully request that we agree to disagree as we are not likely going to come to any resolution on the subject.

        Liz

      • Liz

Lynn, I’m done discussing this here. To me, it is you who are choosing to ignore the obvious implications because you simply do not like what you’re seeing. Yes, as a matter of fact, I DO believe everyone has the right to interpret a scene the way they so choose (and enjoy the show as they want to!), but even I (being the large PS shipper that I am) can admit that there ARE instances in the past where Sheldon comes off as asexual. Why, then, can you not at least ADMIT that in this particular instance they *might* just be using the other side of the coin as a promotional tactic? If anyone is a hypocrite…

And if we are not supposed to pick up any sexual undertones, WHY even use this scene in the first place for the 20 second promo? There at least 6 different scenes I know of in tonight’s episode that could have been utilized to promote but they chose to run with the one that has Sheldon touching Penny’s breast. (…?) And interesting still is the wording they are using; “Damsel in Distress”; “To Save her”; the Superman theme song playing in the background… and *usually* there are romantic tones connected to the Superhero and Damsel in Distress, if you weren’t already aware. So, clearly Penny and Sheldon are supposed to be paralleled to these roles. How you are not putting two and two together is beyond me. (In fact, I would like to be enlightened as to how *else* you can interpret this wording?)

Anyway, I am out of this conversation, whatever you “choose” to believe is fine. We will both see what happens in future episodes and beating the dead horse on a thread like this is not going to change that fact one iota.

  • Courtney Beth

Sheldon belongs with PENNY. Not Leonard’s mother D:

    • jennifer

Yes!!!!!!!!!!! (I’m actually a Sheldon/Penny shipper.) The chemistry between them is scintillating. Sparks just waiting to turn into an explosion. Bang! ;)

      • jennifer

        Re: last night’s episode: Yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!

  • Sue

Certainly everyone is entitled to want what they want, even if it IS in direct opposition to what the writers/creators visualized. However, after last week’s episode, where the dynamic of “parents and child” were clearly re-established, it seems doubtful that things will change. I love Sheldon and Penny, but I have not ever sensed anything between them except growing respect and familial affection.

  • nikki

I think they should introduce another character to the story, another female that can manipulate Sheldon. It would be comical to see Sheldon experience love and/or sexual feelings.

  • jess

Christine Baranski would NEVER!!! She’s too classy.

  • Steffi

Love love love Christine Baranski. Totally hope that this coming episode will be as great as the last she was in, but seeing her and Sheldon together in a romantic scene…I don’t think I’d be ready for that.

  • Brittany

Actually, on Tvfanatic’s website, they have a picture for this episode and Leonard’s mom is kissing Sheldon, he’s got a sort of “What the frack?!” expression on his face. It took me a few minutes to process when I saw it.

  • Carlos Roa

They match perfectly as mates to make suffer poor Leonard, hehhehe…
