Ratings: 'V' drops, 'NCIS: L.A.' edges out 'DWTS'

ABC’s V lost 23 percent of its debut audience, and its Adult 18-49 rating sank 29 percent — but still finished second in its timeslot in total audience. Meanwhile, NCIS and NCIS: Los Angeles improved on their audiences from last week for CBS, and Los Angeles beat out Dancing With the Stars in total viewership despite a much-hyped guest performance by Susan Boyle in the ballroom. NBC’s The Biggest Loser averaged 9.6 million viewers from 8-10 p.m. and gained viewership over two hours, while Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance dropped viewers during the same time. The CW’s Melrose Place scored a personal worst on Tuesday –  Amanda Woodward will have a lot of things to whip into shape as Heather Locklear’s guest-star run begins next week.

10 to 11 million sounds right around what a sci fi series should expect for V. But if it continues to go down it might be in trouble. NCIS seems to be unstoppable until American Idol comes back maybe.

    • znachki

Well, AI hasn’t really stopped them before. It may slow them down a bit, but last year the series was #5 over all for the season even with AI.

      • steve

yeah, i just meant it probably will be number one until american idol comes back on.

  • hopie

    YAY NCIS is still #1

  • DW

The article says V had the lowest drop for a new series this fall, but it was actually the highest. Too bad, as the show is pretty great.

  • rachel

    I Love NCIS: LA!

  • Kev

V is the Bionic Woman of 2009. Loads of hype, big premiere, but the lousiness of the show had viewers shut it off.

    • elr

I missed the first 15 minutes of V and recorded the rest. When I had an opportunity to watch it no one in my family was interested in it and I couldn’t work up any enthusiasm to watch, so I just deleted it from the list. I think if I wouldn’t have known already that there were only 3 more episodes before it took a long break until March(?), I would have made more of an effort to watch it. I hate these long breaks! They are a big factor to why shows don’t keep a bigger audience. The networks need to come up with a non-stop season without all the interruptions.

YES!!!!! NCIS-LA was awesome last night! Finally getting a little background info on Callen…I wish the haters would give it another chance..

  • Ronnie

No surprise about the “V” drop. It’s up against the number one scripted show on TV right now. The real test will come next week to see if it will maintain this week’s numbers.

    • Sarah

Agreed. If V can maintain around 10 mil vs NCIS, I say its doing pretty well, but if The Biggest Loser surpasses it next week, it could be trouble.

  • paige

really? people are excited for NCIS?! thats how you know its the end of television.

    • Lana

      Agreed! Cookie cutter TV, boring!

      • ash

Have you ever actually watched it?!?

  • ks

I enjoyed NCIS, but maybe just let the bad guy play out for more than one show? Tony-”who do you think you are-Sarah Palin” REALLY??

    • jmh

This is my favorite show on tv but I was soooo irritated with the Sarah Palin jab. Is it really necessary to insert politics into my favorite shows?

      • Morgan

Every time NCIS tries topical humor it goes over like a lead balloon. It always comes out forced and uncomfortably.

      • cowboy

NCIS WAS a great show. No more. Intentional political cheap shots will do it more harm than its producers and writers could ever have imagined. I will never watch it again.

    • ash

That’s what i like about NCIS, is that it usually doesn’t do the topical humor, so I didn’t dig that either. But USUALLY they nail the humor every episode, so I can forgive this one slip-up…

  • DTisca

The Biggest Loser gain in the 2nd half can easily be attributed to the weigh-ins… they’re the only part worth watching. Too bad they take forever.

  • Sue

Ok, NCIS is good, but it’s not that good. Don’t get me wrong Mark Harmon and crew are awesome as a cast. But it’s just like House, CSI, Cold Cose, the forgotten. They figure it all out by the end of each episode and you know they will. I prefer shows with a bit more mystery and story telling like Lost, Flash Forward and V. Something different, not the same ol’thing every week.

  • 134 Freeway

Really wanted to like V. Clever premise. Liked the original. But so far, it’s pretty awful. I realize we are supposed to suspend disbelief for a sci-fi show, but it is not doing a good job of creating its own reality. Everyone is walking around with iPhones, wouldn’t someone use the internet or texting to reveal the horrible secret about the Visitors? And the whole teenage romance plot is stupid!

    • LTC

I have to agree w/you. The son reminds me of the daughter from 24. Everytime she was on screen, I just had to change the channel. His character/acting has the same effect. I like sci-fi shows, but this is blah.

  • Mikaylah

People tend to dismiss NCIS cause it is a “cop show”, but it is really so much more than that. It is fun, funny, and character centered. I’m glad it is finally getting some recognition. :)

  • Rob

Melrose Place, seriously who is watching this show?

    • rerun

      Well, apparently, no one.

  • Angelo Barovier

Not gonna lie; bit disappointed with NCIS this year. The new showrunner is impressing me less and less with the quality of writing. The strength of NCIS has always subtlety and detail. This year, it has not been so strong. Damn shame, really, as the cast is firing on all cylinders but they need better material. (NCIS: LA is still a ‘meh’ for me.)

    • Nerwen Aldarion

If this were season 6 I would agree with you, last year was not the best. This year (with exception to In-Laws and Outlaws) the writing has been very good. Truth and Consequences was the best episode I have seen in forever and I’m glad to see NCIS going back to the intersting cases and great twists which always made the show good.
