Exclusive: Taylor Kitsch leaving 'Friday Night Lights'?

It looks like Tim Riggins will be warming the bench for at least a portion of Friday Night Lights’ fifth season.

Executive producer Jason Katims confirms that Taylor Kitsch will be off filming his lead role in John Carter of Mars, Disney’s big-screen adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ book series, during production of FNL‘s probable final season. As a result, he says Kitsch “will miss part” of the season. “[But] we are communicating with the [John Carter] production to work out the schedule so that Taylor can be in as much of season 5 as possible.”

The news comes as production on FNL‘s fourth season, now airing on DirecTV, begins to wind down. The cast and crew will take a brief hiatus before beginning work on season 5 in March.

Although there’s been no official announcement that Lights will go out after the fifth season, Katims recently told me that “everybody is operating under that assumption.”

Good thing a little Tim Riggins goes a long way, right?

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Okay, fine. But I won’t like it.

  • Cindy

I will miss one of my favorite characters of all time for sure, but Taylor Kitsch becoming the huge mega-star he deserves is a better reason than most for his absense. I wish him nothing but luck, but he will be missed.

I’d expect Disney/Marvel to make an announcement about a Gambit movie in the very near future…

    • Liza5326

That would make my day!! I love Gambit and Taylor is so sexy!!

  • Kelli

OH NO!!! I love this shoe, and especially Taylor, and I am SAD to hear that the lights may go out after season 5. I hope this isn’t the case.

  • Monica

I’m glad to hear he will be in season 5 at all. I expected him to leave after season 4 because of the movie. So a little Riggins around in season 5 is definitely good news for me. Thanks Ausiello!

  • Grady

Or maybe I should read the post. It’s not Gambit, it’s Carter Of Mars. STILL, I wouldn’t be surprised if they needed him for X-Men stuff as well

  • Morgan

That’s more than I expected, I really thought season four would be his last.

  • Katie

I need all of the Riggins I can get. What an amazing man.

  • Eh…

I think he needs to leave at the end of this season. He is out of place as the lone stick around.

Sad to think of an FNL-less world, though, after season 5. It’s still 22 episodes away, but it’s too sad to think about.

It’s already a bit of a stretch keeping Taylor on season 4. I’m fine with a few episodes in season 5.

  • Josje

Thank god, he’s going to be in season 5. I was afraid that he wasn’t going to be in anything. And I disagree. Riggins is Dillon, without him FNL wouldn’t be the same. I want a good ending for him. Like give him the ranch with Street that he dreaming about in the first episode. Just make him succesfull he deserves that.

  • Lucas K

This show truly flies under the radar. I’ll be sad the day it ends.

  • Chloe

Count me amongst those who are grateful that he will be in season 5 at all. I thought JCOM would prevent it from happening. I am very happy for Taylor, he definitely deserves it, but FNL won’t be the same without Tim Riggins.

The day the light so out will be a sad one, as much as I want a season 6+ I am at least glad that they won’t leave us hanging. I’ve not heard any news on how the show is doing on DirecTV this season (fix this Ausiello, plz?), or how it did last season when it aired on NBC for that matter. This deal seems too perfect to end, I mean isn’t it good for NBC to have something in the can for spring once shows again start falling by the wayside? I’m gonna put on my blinders and just enjoy what I’m getting right now, thinking about it all ending is too traumatizing to think about.
