I didn’t really care about the potential relationship last season, but once they got together I enjoyed their storylines. Until the breakup episode (which was poorly executed). Then it just turned ugly [and I don't mean how B&R looked ;) ]. I liked Barney before and during the relationship, but I’m not finding him all that awesome post-relationship.

I think the writers were just really lazy. They spent an entire season building this “Barney’s secret love for Robin” plot which I liked, however they never developed Robins feelings for him, so the moment they got together I was not convinced. I’m glad theyre broken up, but I do hope at some point they both mature and come back to each other when they get over their ways (and the writers manage to show a glimpse of Robin genuinely liking him). Course I also love Barney as is, so I dont necessarily want it to happen until the show ends.

Oh, yeah, that’s the other part of the writing that was really poor. Did we ever see Robin develop feelings for Barney? There was a little mention of how love didn’t have to be like Marshall and Lily in “Three Days of Snow” (btw, what happened to THAT writers?) and then just what happened in “The Leap.” TPTB are really slipping up lately.

cant stand shows that write on the fly with no plan

  • S

I wanted them together when Barney was pining after her, but I’m glad they broke up. I didn’t like them as a couple. Also, with them together the show got kind of stale – especially because 4 of the 5 characters were coupled up.

    • Blah

They show grew stale because the writers half-assed their relationship. They turned them into unrecognizable characters and gave them beyond lame story-lines.

    • Mary

Season 2 – 4 of the 5 characters were in relationships too. It can work when there’s good writing.

  • Eric

I really enjoyed them getting together- but I’m equally happy that their relationship ran it’s course.

Part of what I love about the show is it’s portrayal of people in their late 20′s/early 30′s in differnent places in their lives. We already have Lily and Marshall married- it would have felt like 2 couples and Ted.

I like them single – gives them more opportunities for dating disasters.

just when i thought they had jumped the shark, barney whips out the Playbook and it’s on!!

    • Travis

Completely agree, the show had jumped the shark. But now it’s back

      • bdoll

a show can’t un-jump the shark. that expression is SO overused.

  • Vanessa

I agree with Platy. After seeing him with Robin, watching him revert back to his old ways like that whole relationship never even happened is painful and annoying.

I love single Barney, I do. But I am also annoyed that there’s nothing more to him that being the “single douche”. I mean they just can’t write anything good that doesn’t involve him being a womanizer.

  • Lou

His comment about giving people what they “really” want is ridiculously insulting. I know what I want and don’t want, thanks.

    A) If you didn’t want Barney in a relationship, don’t build up his falling in love with Robin for an entire season.

    B) If you didn’t want Barney/Robin falling into a boring relationship, write their relationship better.

    Simple as that.

  • Nathan

I have to wonder why they bothered hooking them up at all then if they knew they weren’t going to able to continue writing them being awesome in a relationship. All they did was destroy 4 season’s worth of chemistry and tension for no payoff. HIMYM has never let me down in the past (other shows have multiple times) but now that they have and in such a massive way, it’s hard to enjoy the show the way I did before. I just wish they hadn’t gone there at all with Barney & Robin.

  • Saif

I think the breakup was done a bit abruptly. But Barney belongs in the wild, not to be tied down by a lame relationship. This was the best thing to happen to Barney fans in a long time!

  • Brandy

i resent the fact the TPTB feel like there is only one way to be in a relationship. I know loads of people who stay awesome and independent in relationships.

I don’t know that Barney and Robin were ready for an adult relationship, but to assume that one has to go to brunch and wear sweater vests to be in a relationship is sort of insulting.

  • Helena

    BREAK UP= NOT COOL
not all couples have to be “boring” tied down. I was sure they were going to show the whole world how to be an AWESOME couple. because by themselves they’re complete ball of awesome. Together they copuld have been an universe of awesome. I do hope they get back together in the end, when both of them are “ready to be tied down(& boring according to the producers)” so neither of them better get a relationship soon or the whole EXCUSE for breaking them up will be LAME.

  • syd

I think Barney & Robin belong together! but they need to write them well. they have to have their personalities back!!! and not be M\L like the are awesome square and they soul mates!
Barney is awesome by himself but even awesomer with his BEST BRO EVER! look for some Fanfics and you’ll see how awesome they can be together!!!

    i believe in BROtp
    don’t you?!

  • Michelle

I’m sure HIMYM will survive without Barney and Robin together. What I didn’t really understand was how okay both of them were with breaking up. I mean, I thought Barney was IN LOVE with Robin or maybe I just made that up in my head. It just all seemed weird.

  • Marcy

I love Barney & Robin. They messed up their relationship SO BAD though. I’m so disappointed in the show this season.
