'Grey's Anatomy' scoop: Crisis looms for Mark and Lexie

Mark-and-Lexie_lWarning: If you’re a fan of Grey’s Anatomy lovebirds Mark and Lexie, grab a defibrillator before reading.

The early 2010 Grey’s/Private Practice crossover I told you about last week will find the doctor formerly known as McSteamy spending some quality time with his currently single ex, Addison. “They’ve both really grown up since they were together, and most of the animosity that they had is gone,” says Shonda Rhimes, executive producer of both shows. “Now they’re friends, but they may end up falling back into their old patterns while they’re together.”

But wait, there’s more (so keep those paddles handy). READ FULL STORY »

Fall TV's biggest DVR gainers: Check out the top 25!

Nielsen’s has released Week 5 and fall season-to-date rankings for DVR playback viewership. Some noteworthy points: For the week of Oct. 19-25, the following shows cracked the Top 20 of the DVR total-viewership ranking but not the Top 20 for live viewing: ABC’s Private Practice, Flash Forward, Castle, Modern Family, and Brothers & Sisters, NBC’s The Office, Heroes, and 30 Rock, and Fox’s Glee. Four of the top eight DVR’d shows for Week 5 were hour-longs from ABC. The CW is the network which consistently boasts the biggest percent differences between live and DVR viewership for shows like Smallville, Gossip Girl, 90210 and Melrose Place; Fringe and Dollhouse also perform very well in this regard for Fox.

After the jump, the Top 25 shows by total average DVR viewership (data reflects the fall season so far, from Sept. 21-Oct. 25)… READ FULL STORY »

'Fringe' exclusive: J.J. Abrams on 'bad' ratings, good vibes, and the show's future

Categories: Fringe

fringe_lIt’s hardly a secret that Fringe is having a tough go of it on Thursday night this season. Last week, the sophomore drama’s audience shrunk to just 5 million viewers — an all-time low. Sure, two weeks of pre-emptions due to baseball didn’t help, but the fact remains: Fringe is struggling. READ FULL STORY »

Ratings: Fox down from baseball with 'Family Guy' special, football wins for NBC

Fox was back to earthly ratings levels in its first post-baseball Sunday evening with relocated-from-Friday fall sitcom bomb Brothers and American Dad, which, without its regular Family Guy lead-in, was down 2.2 million viewers from its last original airing, according to early Nielsen estimates. A Family Guy special, Seth & Alex’s Almost Live Comedy Show, came in 1.2 million viewers below Family Guy‘s most recent episode and just a bit lower than the two originals it was sandwiched between this week. NBC easily won the night with, of course, sports – Sunday Night Football‘s Cowboys-Eagles matchup scored 19 million viewers, up almost 50 percent over the last game now that there’s no baseball competition.

Here, a look at Sunday’s lineup (with approximate numbers for CBS, which was skewed by early-evening football overrun):

'Gossip Girl' threesome: do parents really have reason to worry?

Categories: Gossip Girl, Television

Tantalizing promos that tease a possible sexual threesome during the Nov. 9 episode of Gossip Girl may have ticked off the Parents Television Council but it seems unlikely the CW will give the advocacy group anything to complain about to the FCC. Though the CW wouldn’t comment on next week’s episode, those familiar with the network’s standards and practices procedures say the infamous Without a Trace teen orgy scene on CBS had a big impact on how the CW depicts sexual intercourse between teen characters, especially on Gossip Girl.

In 2006, the FCC fined 111 CBS affiliates a record $3.6 million for airing what it viewed was an indecent depiction of teenage sex in December 2004. The scene, which CBS said appeared in the final half-hour of primetime and offered a socially relevant storyline for parents, involved teenage boys and girls engaged in a bacchanal. Since then, the CW has attempted to refrain from showing any sexual act between two characters if they are not over the age 18. In simpler terms: there’s always lots of talk but zero visuals. So even if most of the lead characters on Gossip Girl are out of high school, it’s likely the show will play it safe. “They’ll infer stuff but not get real explicit,” according to an industry observer with key knowledge of the CW’s standards. “I’d be surprised if there’s anything real explicit in the Gossip Girl episode.”

As for advertisers, there’s always the chance that action taken by the Parents Television Council could prevent some companies from airing commercials during shows like Gossip Girl. But the broadcast networks — unlike most, if not all, of the cable nets — allow their clients to screen any episode that may be deemed inappropriate before they buy the commercial time. That’s what happened when Microsoft decided to pull its sponsorship of “Family Guy Presents: Seth and Alex’s Almost Live Comedy Show” that will air Nov. 8 on Fox; representatives of the company actually attended the show’s taping and saw what was in store. Even then, Microsoft’s decision seemed odd when Family Guy has a long and well-documented history of pushing the envelope (the show, no surprise, has been targeted by the Parents Television Council, as well). The special has since lured a new sponsor: Warner Bros’ upcoming movie Sherlock Holmes starring Robert Downey Jr.

Wanda Sykes on her new talk show: 'Hell yeah, we'll ... have quite a few drinks'

Categories: Television

Wanda-Sykes_lIn preparation for the debut of The Wanda Sykes Show – which debuts tomorrow night on Fox and features guests Mary Lynn Rajskub (24), Daryl “Chill” Mitchell (Brothers) and Phil Keoghan (The Amazing Race) - the 45-year-old comedian and co-star of CBS’ The New Adventures of Old Christine talked to EW exclusively about the show’s laidback format and why Lindsay Lohan will probably never appear as a guest.

EW: How did the deal come about?

Wanda Sykes: It was a little less than a year in the making. My agent said we should talk about doing a talk show. I was like, I don’t want to do it. I was working on my special (for HBO). But with the presidential election, everything was heating up so they came to me again. I thought it’d be cool to have some kind of an outlet where I can go out and speak on things that are happening right now. And also, being a new mom (Sykes and her wife of nearly a year have 5-month-old twins) I’ll have somewhat of a normal schedule and won’t have to be on the road doing standup. So it became a little more appealing to me. READ FULL STORY »

Exclusive first look of James Franco on 'General Hospital'

Categories: Television

James-Franco-General-Hospital_lJames Franco will appear in more than 10 episodes of General Hospital, executive producer Jill Farren Phelps told EW exclusively. On Franco’s first day of taping Oct. 30, the Milk co-star filmed 65 pages – “pretty Herculean in terms of memorization,” Phelps said. He’ll return to the set two more times in preparation for his Nov. 20 debut as a mystery guy who comes to Port Charles. Here’s an exclusive shot of Franco with guest star Marsha Thomason (Las Vegas) from his first day on the set. His role will play out over a two-month period.

“When we first talked to James, we asked him if he really knew what he was getting into,” Phelps told EW. “But he was dazzling in terms of being able to memorize his lines. He has a remarkable process. He never forgot his lines.”

Phelps said conversations with Franco began more than six months ago when he indicated through his manager that he wanted to act in a daytime drama (the Golden Globe-winning actor shares the same manager as GH’s Steve Burton). “I was like, really? Are you kidding?” recalls Phelps. “He had heard it was hard and thought it would be fun.”

Franco’s only request was that he’d play an artist who was “a little off,” said Phelps, who declined to reveal more about his mystery character. The groundwork’s already been laid, though, for his much-anticipated arrival: graffiti that reads “CO77X” has popped up around Port Charles. “We’re getting the audience to anticipate something,” Phelps adds. As for Franco’s decision to do the soap, “It takes a lot of humility on the part of an actor to not judge it. He’s really living his life with a lot of curiosity. It’s so nice to have a shot in the arm like this where we get a lot of attention. It’s good for daytime and who knows? Hopefully it’ll open the door for more film stars.”

Aziz Ansari talks about his Comedy Central stand-up special and a strip club outing for the 'Parks and Recreation' gang

Categories: Television

Aziz_cover_digitalMECH-900Aziz Ansari has filmed a Comedy Central stand-up special, “Intimate Moments for a Sensual Evening,” that will air on the cable network on Jan. 17, two days before the gig is released in DVD and CD form. “To have an hour special is really cool,” the 26-year-old Parks and Recreation star tells EW.com. “It’s bigger than the time I filled up my Quiznos Q Rewards Card, but smaller than the time I filled up four Quiznos Q Rewards Cards.” The special, which was recorded this summer at the Brentwood Theater in Los Angeles, includes material from his “Glow in the Dark” tour (“I talk about being a twentysomething dude, just d—ing around all the time,” he notes) and also features Ansari in character as Raaaaaaandy, the overenergized, profane comedian that was seen in the 2009 film Funny People. “Let’s just say a lot of sequins are involved—and a huge sign that says Raaaaaaaandy with eight A’s and all these crazy effects,” he hints. “It’s probably more similar to Soulja Boy’s last tour than any standup specials I’ve seen.”

The filming went surprisingly well, according to Ansari. “The crowd gave me a standing ovation after every single joke—there are 53 standing ovations,” he deadpans. “It’s a little distracting, and some people might say, ‘Wait a second, it looks like it was edited to look like there were 53 standing ovations,’ but that’s not the case. Those were all genuine. I know people are thinking, ‘But there are so many great specials and that’s never happened before.’ Well, I don’t know what to tell you. The material was that strong, and that’s the way those people felt they had to respond—by standing up in the exact same fashion for the exact amount of time, 53 times.’”

The applause continues for Ansari on NBC’s Parks and Recreation as wanna-be player Tom Haverford. In coming weeks, not only do our government goofs embark on a hunting trip, they hit The Glitter Factory—a strip club referenced in a previous episode. Parks and Recreation filmed these scenes at a gentlemen’s club in L.A. called Bare Elegance. “At first I was a little bit worried,” says Ansari, “but when I got there, outside there was a Bare Elegance-wrapped SUV and it said that it was rated No. 1 in Zagats, so I was like, ‘Great!’” You’ll also see Ansari stretch his dramatic chops a bit in an episode that deals with Tom and his green-card marriage, which seems to be on its last legs. “It’s really emotional stuff for Tom, and it was fun for me to do some serious acting,” says Ansari, who’ll appear on the big screen next year in Get Him to the Greek. “I spent a lot of time on the phone with actors like Daniel Day Lewis and Bruce Willis about how I should approach the role and get into that mindset.” What advice did he receive? “Bruce Willis just kept saying, ‘Welcome to the party, pal,” and different quotes from Die Hard so that wasn’t very helpful,” he quips. “And then Daniel Day Lewis told me I should quit and start cobbling shoes. Neither of them were that helpful so I just kind of had to dig deep and hopefully pull it off.”
