There will be something conspicuously missing when Friends costar Lisa Kudrow guests on Courteney Cox’s ABC sitcom, Cougar Town, on Jan. 6: friendship.
“They didn’t want to play friends,” says executive producer Bill Lawrence, who quickly came up with a different role for Kudrow. “She plays a dermatologist who is a horrible, horrible person, but [Cox] goes to her because she’s the best. The [sight] of them playing people who dislike each other intensely was very funny for me to watch.”
If the execution is half as funny as the set-up, I think this is going to be a winner. What do you think? Excited to see the friends morph into enemies? And do you think it’s sad that I interrupted my vacay to post this story? (I have boundary issues.) Sound off below!

YAY
As great as it is to see them back together again (And it IS) … part of me really wants to do botox jokes.
Please do. My favorite part of the show is seeing a freshly bo’d Courtney Cox. I love her. I love Kudrow. Can’t wait!
The Friends reunion is sooooo way overdue. This will simply have to do until that day. I’m starting to wonder if they ever will do the reunion. I can see it now, Joey gets admitted to the old folks home where the rest of the cast already lives. Waiting for God Friends style. Woot. p.s. I love cougar town. I really liked Kudrow in “The Comeback” it’s a shame it didn’t last more than 13 episodes. It was just starting to really find its ground. Cougar Town on the other hand has been brilliant right from the get go. Speaking of Joey what the heck has he been up to these days…
You know that Beckett himself has stated numerous times that “Godot” isn’t supposed to represent God, right?
way to be a douche John.
Yeah, John. Please punch yourself in the face.
John, I’m going to chime in with everyone else calling you a jerk. You were trying to come off as smart, but you didn’t even get the reference maxwell was making. Waiting for God was brilliant.
What the… ? This comment is one of the less useful I ever read.
Waiting for God is a brilliant British sit com. You’all need cable.
John, beautiful attempted smack-down gone horribly wrong. You made me laugh out loud!
John, I believe maxwell is refering to a 1990′s BBC show called “Waiting for God.” It was a comedy about the residents of a retirement home.
Oh Max, don’t give them any ideas. You know how much american TV LOVES to remake british shows.
it sounds great! can’t wait to see them both again
Kudrow looks awesome in that picture. I don’t watch Cougar Town, but I might just check this episode out – if only to be reminded of the glory days of Phoebe and Friends.
Love Lisa!
I’m just excited i get to see them together again even if it is as enemies
I hated Friends so I wasn’t even going to watch Cougar Town, plus the premise is stupid. The show, on the other hand, is BRILLIANT. Cox Arquette is hilarious and I will watch anything with Christa Miller. Kudrow is actually a decent comdian so she will be great. Who knew that ABC would become the place for comedy? 3 of the 4 sitcoms they launched are perfect. Not a bad record in the days of too much reality tv.
How can you hate Friends?
Believe it or not, Friends isn’t a great show creatively. It might have been hugely popular, but I think Two and a Half Men has taught us that popularity isn’t akin to quality. I personally really like Friends, but it’s not the most sophisticated or “smart” show in the last 20 years.
Friends reruns still make me laugh out loud at times. To me, that is a definition of a great show.
I’ve enjoyed Cougar Town from the start, and I enjoyed The Comeback. It will be awesome to see these two together again.
indeed! How can you hate friends??? Such a fantastic show. To compare it to Two and a Half Men is blasphemy!!! Every episode STILL makes me laugh. I just watched four last night. Timeless humour
Friends did a great job of developing the characters. It was great because we kind of “knew” them. The writing got better over the years. It could be super cheesy and predictable, but it was also very comforting.
The earlier seasons were hilarious and they still can make me laugh when I watch the reruns, but the later seasons were just plain awful. I think once Monica and Chandler got married the show started to slowly die. I was glad when they ended it.
“Friends” is a great show creatively! It won emmys and was frequently among yearly “Best of..” lists in this publication and others.
Doug, don’t you dare compare Friends to Two and a Half Men. While they are both popular, Friends is the one that is actually funny and deserved to be popular. And while it may not have been the most sophisticated comedy on TV, it still had some great, witty writing during its 10 years.
I love Friends but I understand why some may not. After all, not everyone is a fan of sitcoms.
Assuming you like sitcoms, then you cannot dislike Friends. It is scientifically illogical. You like sitcoms, Friends is the best sitcom, ergo, you must like Friends. That’s not me talking, that’s science, dude.
Crista Miller’s lips were a facination to me in Scrubs. They got bigger and bigger, and her mouth just ended up frozen.
They worked together after friends, on Kudrow’s web series.
Web Therapy was hilarious. I hope it’s coming back for a third season. Just get through the first episode, it was boring. But the rest are good.
it’s by no means sad to take a break from the vacays to give us this news. are you kidding? I’d drop anything for my Courteney!
loving her dress btw- thanks man!
Kristin, I second your statements about Cougartown. It sounded terrible on paper, but yet the sum is more than the parts.
I always thought Phoebe was a terrible friend anyway.
They shouldn’t do a reunion show. Every time there is one, 90% of ‘fans’ comlain endlessly about how ‘it’s not the same’. Well duh! It is off the air for 5 years, get over it, move on and watch new shows!! The industry needs it!
I am glad to see Lisa K. getting work and not playing a ‘spacey chick’.
Maybe they should do a reunion episode on another show, just like Seinfeld on Curb your enthusiasm…
geez, read some comments and some people must really think the ‘Friends’ characters are real! “What’s Joey been up to?” Umm, his name is Matt LeBlanc and he’s living off the rerun $$.
The border of a feeling.

I’m pretty sure “luminous light” is redundant.
