'Glee': Source says there are plans to release original content during hiatus

Filed under: News, Television and tagged:

I know these last few days since the Glee fall finale have been tough, fellow Gleeks. Personally, I watched the “My Life Would Suck Without You” performance about six times, not wanting to let the show end. Glee is not scheduled to return with new episodes until April 13 (the cast and crew will begin shooting the back nine episodes in early January) but EW does have some info that will hopefully help you handle your withdrawal: sources close to the show say that there are plans to release original content during the hiatus (similar to how clips and music were released this past summer between the May preview and the season premiere) and that an episode marathon is being discussed prior to the series returning. While nothing is official yet, Gleeks, your best bet is to check out the series twitter and Facebook pages for updates.

Meanwhile, Fox says it’s not concerned about Glee’s four-month long hiatus. “If I were ABC, I would be concerned about FlashForward because those shows are ending in a downward cycle—Glee’s ending in an upward cycle,” says Preston Beckman, Fox’s EVP of Strategic Program Planning and Research. “The best news of all is that when it returns it’s gonna be sitting behind American Idol. So it’s not like we’re putting it in a time period where it’s gonna have to fight.”

I love how the Fox rep threw ABC and FlashForward under the bus for no apparent reason, then went on to gloat about Glee’s success and time slot. Too funny!
Preston Beckman, I’d have you at my festivus table any day.

    • Sarah

Yeah. I know. Sometimes the heads at Fox say the weirdest things. Like the shows, not the suits.

    • hrfe

Also considering its going against LOST– I would call that having to fight….

      • zach

Really? I thought that lost started an hour before and was on during AI. I love both shows, so I guess I might have to choose between the two. Maybe since this is Lost’s final season I’ll watch it and hulu Glee.

      • viewer

Lost jumped the shark like two seasons ago…

      • Becca

April 13th is a Tuesday. So maybe Glee is changing it’s date? So no choosing!

      • cowboy

LOST has lost it’s edge. No one cares anymore.

      • Jackie

@cowboy. No-one cares about Lost anymore? Maybe in your house. Not in mine and millions of others.

    • Dug

Festivus for the rest of us… that’s hilarious… I’d love to witness the airing of grievances with ole Preston…. lol

  • Monty

“…it’s not like we’re putting it in a time period where it’s gonna have to fight.”

Yeah. says the guy who just put his show against the number 1 drama of the decade in its final season.

I love me my glee, but i’ll be damned if i miss an episode of Lost!

    • Kevin

Yeah, I agree. I love Glee but the final season of Lost is way more important.

      • Krista

same here.. as much as i’m starting to become OBSESSED with Glee, I’ll be watching Lost this winter. Glee will have to wait, plus it’s easier not to be spoiled for Glee than it is for Lost. Lost is one of those shows that it’s best when you watch the episodes as they air rather than like the next day.

      • Megan

AMEN! Love both shows immensly. But I am way more invested in Lost at this point. Good thing I have a DVR.

    • Tiffany

I agree. I’ve been watching Lost since day 1. I love Glee but there’s no way I’m missing an episode of Lost’s final seaon.

    • Yesenia

Yep, pretty funny he chose to say that because a “fight” is precisely what is going to happen. And count me in as a Glee fan that will also choose Lost in a heartbeat.

      • whatever

Same here. Glee and Lost are both good but Lost is way too much cliffangherish. (Sorry Glee, you’ll have to wait !)

    • KK

Me, too! I LOVE Glee (love, love, love) but I’ll be DVRing it and watching Lost.

    • Paul

Exactly. My friends and family still watch Lost every week. Glee loses out, especially when I know I can watch it the day after on Hulu, with a significantly smaller chance of running into spoilers while I wait.

    • sheikia

Actually, it’s been offically announced that LOST is going to be on Tuesdays now. So Glee will not have any competition.

      • gzellf

as far as I know, glee has also been moved to Tuesday’s at 9pm, therefor, competing with lost. I am so torn between those two shows, ugh

    • mscisluv

I love both shows but will be watching Lost live and Glee on DVR. However, I guess it really only matters if you’re a Nielsen household.

  • Alexandria

Great news! Four months with nothing would be rough.

Re: in a non-fighting time period, did he forget it’ll overlap with the end of Lost’s final season?

  • Mary

“It’s not like we’re putting it in a time period where it’s gonna have to fight?” Ummmm, they’re putting it behind Lost. I’d say that’s going to be one hell of a fight.

    • Mary

      Oops, I meant against.

  • KT

Yeah, he may have gotten in the dig about FlashForward, but he may have spoken too soon about it not having to fight in the time slot it will be in come spring. In case he’s forgotten, FOX decided to put Glee up against LOST. Considering that this is the final season of LOST and how avid the fans are, Glee may have to bring a little fight to the table when it returns.

  • Fatima

I will be doing ALL of my Glee viewing on Hulu after the break. Nothing beats Lost. Nothing.

    • chattypatra

Exactly. No way am I going to miss an episode of Lost’s last season. Sorry, Glee, I’ll see you on Hulu because I’ll be taping Lost while I watch it so I can see it again immediately after. You know it always needs a second viewing to fully understand it!

  • Keith

I don’t know why so many shows are going on hiatus because of the Olympics. I think they might be over estimating how many people care about watching them. I know I probably won’t watch one minute of Olympic coverage.

    • PJ

Well, if YOU’RE not going to watch, it must be a failure! News flash, the world isn’t revolving around you!

    • Kevin

Yeah, I never watch the Olympics either.

      • sbwm

        Nope, not a watcher either.

      • Monique

Yeah, I don’t really watch most of the olympics either. Only when nothing else is on…oh wait…

    • dave

I think you’re underestimating how many people care about watching the Olympics.

    • Ambient Lite

I never really plan to watch the Olympics, but the media coverage is overwhelming and puts me in some kind of a zombie state and I watch it all!

    • Jennifer

It’s not just the Olympics. There is also the NCAA Basketball tournament in March going into the first few days of April.

      • Alex

oh god, I hate the NCAA thing. Goes on for way too long and there’s nothing else on TV during it.

    • Melinda65

I’m not a regular sports viewer, but I never miss the Olympics, and the Winter Games especially because many of the sports are not regularly televised.

Also chiming in on the Lost/Glee issue: I’ll be recording both, but watching Lost live. I adore Glee, but the last season of Lost will be event TV in my house like the previous seasons.

      • Nick

Never watch the olympics or the NCAA. Love Lost, but since I missed too many episodes over the years I can’t follow anymore. Glee has my top priority. Fox execs are idiots for putting it against such a great show though, but I’m not surprised. Fox originally killed Family Guy, and is responsible for countless great shows getting canceled, including Tru Calling, Firefly, Arrested Development, and just recently, Dollhouse. Really, not surprised at all. Idiots.

    • cowboy

Well, they might as well not even AIR the Olympics, if YOU’RE not going to watch. To hell with everyone who WANTS to!

  • Steve

Thats what the power of DVR is for ;) Glee doesn’t have to worry IMO. It is fresh, new, and just too darn AWESOME!!!! Hmmm…Lost; I never got into and I live where they film it. Eastwick was something I enjoyed but ABC screwed it over…ARG. I can’t wait for GLEE!!! :)

  • Courtney

Four months without Glee… This will be tough. But hopefully clips will make it somewhat bearable!

  • jj

Well, I love the Winter Olympics and can wait a little for my favorite shows. Sorry that Glee will be scheduled opposite Lost. I will watch Lost and catch up with Glee later. Lost is a main course that I can’t live without and Glee is a dessert that is nice to have but can be skipped.

  • k

Hulu.com always has the Glee shows the day after…..I make sure to subscribe and can watch it when it is convenient for me….so, I don’t miss LOST and i can still be a gleek!

  • mishka

    Bye Bye My Glee!

  • pauch

That dig was kinda lame and uncalled for but what I think was meant by the comment of being in a time period is that it’ll continue to perform in the manner that it always has. Not a front runner but a solid performer. Moving against lost is counter programming. It’s an alternative to the drama’s that are appearing on the other 3 networks at that time. I think that’s what he means.

  • angjen0816

I can’t believe the guy from FOX said Glee won’t have a fight with its time slot! I LOVE glee but no way in hell will i watch glee over the final episodes of LOST!

  • Amy

Apparently I’m the only person who couldn’t care less about Lost. Glee is the only show this season that I actually watch live, and come April that will continue. In fact, I’m rather happy that Lost is going away, just so I can stop hearing people go on and on and on about it!

    • whatever

I also am glad that Lost is ending… BECAUSE I’LL FINALLY KNOW WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED !!! People go on and on about it because there always are things to talk about. Sorry for you but I don’t think they’ll just stop talking about it after the finale. Still, agree with you, Glee is worth being seen live. But not against Lost.

    • downtown diva

“Apparently I’m the only person who couldn’t care less about Lost.”

No, Amy, you’re not. To me Lost is highly overrated, and I’ve never been a fan.

I do have a concern about the fact that Glee isn’t planning to air new episodes in February at all, though. The Olympics will be on only 15 or 16 nights. Maybe one or two of the nights before or after the Olympics will be when the clips are aired.

      • Yesenia

I don’t think the wait until April is (at least not entirely) because of the olympics. From what I understand its to accommodate Ryan Murphy’s schedule. They won’t start up filming new episodes again until next month, so they won’t be ready to air episodes by the time of the Olympics anyway

    • stephanie

I never got into Lost so this isn’t a loss for me– and I too am a fan of watching Glee live. But it looks like it might just be Amy and me!

    • Gleek

I LOVE you!!! I really don’t care about Glee being at the same time as Lost. I will pick Glee over Lost in an instant. Lost is stupid and I’d rather watch ANTM and then Glee after!!!

    • cowboy

      AMEN!!
