I was complaining about Rita all season long…what a pain in the a$$ she is etc…and now I feel bad for her. lol Plus, I always feel bad when actors that I like get written off shows…I think Julie Benz is a good actress and I’m sad to see her off the show…hopefully she have no problem booking other work.
I, like most of you, was stunned as well. I know nobody is safe on Dexter (except Dexter himself of course), but I thought the family man aspect still had potential. Not sure how they will handle him being a single father. Will he just have Harrison? Or Cody and Astor too? I know a lot of fans want Dexter to be on his own again, but isn’t that pretty cliche? A loner serial killer… jeez, we haven’t seen that before. I thought comparisons to 24 and Seven were spot on. I had the same reaction watching the finale of Dexter. It was sad, but a very memorable tv moment.
What a great season ender! I loved it and cannot wait until the next season begins with a bang! There are so many places this can go from here. So many great options with Dexter and Debra. By far one of the best television shows on right now. Please give it an Emmy! It deserves it.
based on how he found Harrison and Rita i don’t think trinity killed her i think it was someone close to Dexter, i think it may be someone who knew Dexter
It was Trinity… they talked about it after the show.
I think it may have been a dream or a vision…he had a lot of those this episode. Maybe, just maybe….right?
I doubt it was a dream/vision. They probably don’t want to repeat the “Dallas” mistake of twenty-four years ago. We all saw how well killing Bobby Ewing off turned out…
I wasn’t shocked, everyone seemed to have wanted her dead anyways, but a great finale.
That is one thing I am sure of… it was not a dream. I liked Rita on the show. I think she added a lot to Dexter’s character. But there is no way showtime can pull a “Bobby Ewing” dream sequence. They would never live it down. They are past the point of no return now.
Why Rita ? She was the only real sane person on the show. Trinity should have killed the over foul mouthed Debra (when he was in her apt),who is the only truly worthless character on the show. maybe next year. Good luck to Julie Benz in what she does next. Rita being gone is really a big mistake.
EXACTLY. Thank you. But Michael C Hall is married to that actress in real life and would probably refuse to sign on for another season afterwards.
Kill off Debra? She is one of the best characters since the first episode of the first season! Her language goes along with her personality. It would seem fake if she didn’t say what was on her mind. Bad language? This is Showtime, not the Disney Channel!
One of the best charecters? you’re kidding me right? just because she curses, doesn’t make her a good charechter. thats not even why shes one of the worst ever on the show. the whole lundy thing was soooooooo annoying and way over played and the fact that she basically falls for any dick that comes her way is stupid too. she has no purpose on this show other then to annoy. if there is another purpose please show me bc up to now you can take out all her scenes from the 4 seasons and dexter would still make sense and prob be even smoother.
Yeah I disagree, granted the first two seasons I hated Deb and though JC was a terrible actress but she has really grown in this role. Keep Deb, I won’t miss Rita but it was sad seeing her go out like that.
Thanks for the interview. Man this season has been great. The finale was truly shocking. I’m kind of nervous for next season and what will unfold for Dexter.
I know the writers were going to kill off Ritas son but changed their minds last minute because they were too scared to. Dexter saved the child that was part of trinities ritual, So Trinty should have went after the Rita’s son. Would have had more of an impact on me then rita dying, because when Rita finds out Dexter is Partly to blame for her sons death, well that would have been season 3. But they chickened out and killed off Rita instead. I also know they were building to kill off the son because the worked on their bond early on by sending dexter camping.
What you guys think?
I agree with you, James. That would have been an even better ending, and definitely would have fit Trinity’s pattern in a superior way. Though it would have been horrible to see Cody murdered. I can see why the writers chickened out on that, if that’s what happened. But, ultimately, I think it would have been more tragic and compelling the way you described it. Trinity wouldn’t have known, necessarily, that Cody wasn’t Dexter’s biological son. So he would have thought he was murdering Dex’s flesh-and-blood…
It was kinda sad to her go… Ironic as some has said. But i think she needed to stay on the show to keep Dexter at one. At times she was in the way, buuuut she was a needed character.
Maybe they should have had Dexter come home gather his things then fly to the honeymoon place and find that she wasn’t checked in? Then file a missing persons report. Or something on the lines like that…
This ending absolutely floored me. Dexter never lets me down and this season was edge of the seat good. Can’t wait for season 5.
I’m still in a gasping stage of grief and shock!
This is quite a game-changer indeed. Would’ve preferred a time-shift and a super divorce just to save poor Rita from death but to keep her events throughout the season intact, but I guess this will ultimately lead to Debra’s discovery of Dexter’s double life by next season’s end.
Either way, sad and shock face all around.
I think amidst the shock of losing Rita in such a horrible manner we’re supposed to overlook the clumsy placement of Harrison, mirroring Dexter’s own beginnings. I get the symbolism of the whole thing but it doesn’t work. Trinity doesn’t have time find out about Dexter Moser and stage the scene like that. Trinity’s MO is the bathtub suicide. It works on a bunch of different levels. Having Harrison sitting in his mother’s blood was just way too much of a leap of faith. I’m sorry, I think Dexter is one of the best shows on TV but even for me that was really weak.
And I’m not surprised that the writers came up with this turn of events late in the season. I was really hoping that this season was going to end on a cliff hanger that would signal “the beginning of the end.” Like Quinn tailing Dexter to the Trinity kill or seeing him dumping the body in the ocean. Or even Deb connecting the dots. Nope.
Now because the writers room didn’t actually know where they were going we have this gigantic mess. I hope they have the confidence and foresight at Showtime to end the show on a real bang and not drag this thing out, with Dearly Depressed Dexter trying to find meaning in his life again. He had found “meaning” but the writers decided to let her bleed out in the bath tub. Horrible writing job.
That’s assuming Trinity did know about Dexter’s past. It’s just as likely, however, that Trinity simply killed Rita, and left Harrison there to take his innocence without any knowledge of who Dexter really is.
And, for all we know, Dexter could completely cover up Rita’s death and have her reported missing, leaving no connection to Trinity.
While it’s true that it could all be just the way it worked out with Harrison on the floor, I just think it’s extremely depressing for the show as a whole. The writers have given themselves virtually no avenue for any hope all without becoming completely ridiculous. If you don’t have Harrison bathed in blood you have a chance to tell some kind of tale of loss and redemption. But the Dexter we’re left with at the end of the season is never coming back from the brink. Again, I guess he could if you employ some more sledge-hammer crappy writing you could but not the Dexter Morgan we’ve spent the last 4 seasons with. Where do we go from here other than just a completely devastating blood bath. Dexter isn’t capable of dealing with a tragedy like a normal person. He can’t raise children without Rita. Deb and Rita were his anchor to the real world. Harrison is now a mistake, he’s “wrong” as Dexter described himself.
I hope the writers can prove me wrong, but this whole ending screamed shock-value and not plot.
I agree with Bobby, I don’t think we’re supposed to believe that Trinity somehow found out about Dexter’s past and then purposely staged the murder scene that way. I think it just so happened that the baby was there when Trinity went to kill Rita, so Harrison got left there in the aftermath.
But I am definitely conflicted about the way they ended it. The alternatives you mentioned were also what I had been envisioning (and hoping for). Hmm … still trying to digest it all.
Sorry claytron5000, just saw your response to Bobby after I typed my other comment. I am with you about it being extremely depressing for the show as a whole. And I have the same concerns you do about where this will all lead … yeesh … we’ll see. Man I am still feeling so sad about it!
Trinity was in Deb’s apartment and she had been researching Laura Moser… I’m sure he saw Dexter’s name in the article and discovered his past that way…
ok but here’s the thing, and yes i been floored since sunday, lol, how the he!! did tk know dex’s background to leave harry on the floor, and as i’v said, he’s so neat to clean, i think this is in a flashback, HOOOOOOOPEFULLY,or its someone else in his tub, and he just flashed on thinkin it was rita, i dunno, but seems to me this is not TK’s M.O. i know he was pissed bout the money but like i said, not a word was said to dex when he killed him, u would thinkk, he would have given him a hint or something! i just hopeeee this is a dream, cuz i didnt like rita from beg’ing, but she’s grown on me, dunno why lol, but i just hope they sign on for more then 2 more seasons cuz it pissed me off to see the other show mch was on cancelled as well! but omg i cannot wait for next season to get here already!!!!!!!!! lol
IMO Dexter will keep the 3 kids but in order to be able to keep working at the PD he would have to find a tutor or something like that for the kids which will give him time to kill.
Who knows. So now he will be beetween his kids and being a serial killer. Definitelly he will feel obligated to protect them.
On the other hand, maybe the killing of Rita will be somehow a break-point in his life and he will stop killing people.
But again, that won’t be good for the show.
