Sad about the Glee hiatus? Impatient for the return of American Idol? NBC is hoping to capitalize on this situation with The Sing-Off, a Nick Lachey-hosted reality competition in which eight a cappella teams compete for $100,000 and a recording contract. EW has an exclusive peek at the set list for tonight’s two-hour premiere, which begins at 8 p.m. Check it out:
Opening all-group number: “Under Pressure,” Queen/David Bowie
“Unwritten,” Natasha Bedingfield
“I’m Yours,” Jason Mraz
“Watcha Say,” Jason Derulo
“Magical Mystery Tour,” The Beatles
“Dancin’ Queen,” Abba
“Somebody to Love,” Queen
“Livin’ On A Prayer,” Bon Jovi
“Think,” Aretha Franklin
What do you think of these selections?

Didn’t this show already exist…when it was called Clash of the Choirs? I liked Clash of the Choirs, and I always wondered why it only aired 1 season. Nick Lachey was on that show too.
I wanted to check it out but to see how NBC is totally trying to capitalize on Glee being over after they screwed the actual cast over by booting them from the thanksgiving parade. Not being a nielsen I know what I watch doesn’t matter but I still won’t in principle.
How about listing the acapella groups performing?
Here’s the link to the contestants: http://www.nbc.com/sing-off/contestants/
Excited to see the Beezlebubs from Tufts University. They are one of the best in the country, IMO.
I cannot wait for this tonight – wondering who’s going to be doing what songs… and yeah, I am wondering why this is just a redux of Clash of the Choirs…
I think Nick even had his choir sing ‘unwritten’ didn’t he?
nbc is pathetic- except on thursdays
no kidding!
you must be the other assistant to the regional manager
I also can’t wait to tune in tonight. I loved Clash of the Choirs and I’m sure this will be sick too.
LOL is anyone actually planning to watch this?
Even “Clash of the Choirs” was a dud in the ratings (and that show was actually semi-decent)…
I’m only watching for Ben Folds!
What does he have to do with this? I thought no instruments are allowed for the choirs. Is he a judge?
Ben produced released University A Cappella (out in Spring ’09), which consists of a cappella renditions of his songs by collegiate a cappella choirs.
Folds as a judge is my only excuse for watching, too. Although I’m not very excited about the show itself.
Me too! Normally, I would avoid a program like this. I’m only tuning in because I’m a huge fan of Ben Folds.
I am only watching for Ben Folds! I am very excited that he is a judge.
Clash of the Choirs was not about a capella, and they also put the groups together specifically for the show. Sing-Off features all pre-existing choirs.
My friend is on this show! He’s in the Tufts Beezelbubs (one of the groups competing).
There could have been some better songs in there
While I’m surprised there’s a Beatles song in there, why “Magical Mystery Tour”? Suppose it’s better than another overdone version of Lennon’s “Imagine.”
I love how “Somebody to Love,” one of Glee’s most recognizable covers, is on the set list. I know that it’s a popular song, but one has to wonder if Glee hadn’t done it, then this show wouldn’t be singing it either.
Actually, if Glee didn’t exist, neither would this show. So…
actually, somebody to love is huge in the a capella world. it being on the set list has nothing to do with glee.
the socals did somebody to love, dont stop believing, and alone looooong before glee did
Yale had a group that did it back in 1992. I used to have a cassette (yes, I’m old) of theirs. I believe their name was Mixed Company. They also did an incredible cover of Sarah McLachlan’s Vox. They were awesome!
The remote audio mix couldn’t have been any worse. Get it right!
I think this concept of a Sing Off is great, because it offers new groups of amateurs an opportunity to present themselves. It establishes objectivity and experience because it teaches them to take a look at themselves in a line up of other singers with the same ambitions. If it doesn’t destroy their self-confidence after they discover they aren’t quite all that, it can in the long run, help them to refine their ego’s and in turn their singing.
