Snappy Judgments: 2009 Golden Globe nods (TV)

I’m Doing Cartwheels Over:
* Big love for Big Love! Nods for best drama, Bill Paxton (lead actor) and Chloe Sevigny (supporting actress)!
* True Blood for best drama!
* Glee‘s Jane Lynch up for best supporting actress!
* Modern Family makes the best comedy cut!
* Jane Adams’ hilarious Hung pimp scores a supporting actress mention!
* Edie Falco gets a lead actress shout-out for Nurse Jackie.
* John Lithgow carves out a best supporting nod for Dexter.
* Julianna Margulies up for The Good Wife.

I’m Rolling My Eyes About:
* Entourage for best comedy? Instead of Nurse Jackie?
* I love Glee‘s Matthew Morrison, but I’m not convinced he delivered one of the top five male comedy performances of the year.

WTF?!:
* Hey, HFPA: I’d like to introduce you to Jim Parsons. Solid actor. You should check out his work on this little show called The Big Bang Theory. Speaking of which…
* Bupkis for The Big Bang Theory, Friday Night Lights (Connie?! Kyle?!), Chuck (Zach?!), and Breaking Bad (Bryan?! Aaron?!)
* No Katey Sagal for Sons of Anarchy? Hasn’t the woman endured enough this season?
* Mad Men‘s Elisabeth Moss gets passed over.
* No love for the cast of Modern Family.
* Where’s Nathan Fillion? And John Noble? And Busy Phillips? And Amy Poehler?

No “WTF?!” that they shut out SoA & Breaking Bad entirely? Not even Bryan Cranston got a nod! Can you say No *!#)^ way!

    • Tarc

Well, there are a (obviously) lot of people (like me) that don’t like either show – at all. There are a lot of other more deserving shows out there.

      • pauch

So because you don’t like it, that makes it less deserving? I wouldn’t try and make a point about making opinions sound like actual facts as stupid by using your own opinions and stating them as facts.

      • Griff

I actually don’t think it is because you don’t like it. I’m pretty sure your opinion is not counted at all

      • CMD

are you insane what shows are you watching if you aren’t watching some of the two best shows on TV. Pick up a DVD of sons’s of Anarchy and trust me you will change your opinion. How in the hell did Katey Segal not get nominated. Maybe the Globes were to “foreign press” to get the nuances of such and American show like Anarchy.

    • Kate

Especially since Bryan Cranston has won the Emmy like two years in a row…

      • jenn

This category is always hard for me, what with Hugh Laurie, MCH, and Jon Hamm to contend with. BUT last season was a revelation as far I am concerned. Now maybe Dexter will finally get his due.

    • jared4ever

Shocking that Breaking Bad is not nominated. Grrrrrr :(

    • K

Ummm….agreed! SoA – especially Katey Segal – deserved some love this year!

      • sln

totally agree man! she did her finest acting and the show was finally gettin some buzz!

  • sluggo

Love the Jane Lynch nomination, and loved the fact that virtually all of the TV drama noms are for shows on cable networks. How’s Jay Leno working out now, NBC?

    • Taylor

Thought the exact same thing. Broadcast networks are sinking fast.

    • Lyndon

Word. 1 out of 5 in best drama for broadcast. Not a good sign. Kudos to Fox though for almost getting all the tv categories ground covered

      • Julie

ITA, this was my first thought when I looked at it. In times that are so tough cable is a luxury that a lot just can’t afford. Not too mention the limitations on the networks vs the freedom for cable. Not really comparing apples to apples

      • Mo

Julie, since you mention tough times – I don’t have any premium cable channels, but I am catching up on some HBO and Showtime series thanks to my local library carrying the series DVDs…

      • Bags

Speaking of cable vs the networks, I can’t remember who made this point, but someone from a good network show pointed out that they produce 21-25 shows for a season. Cable shows do 10-13. That’s a vast difference in your ability to ensure quality over all episodes. Not that I don’t think networks are failing in many ways. But, food for thought (is there a minimum number of episodes that must be produced for eligibility?).

    • Diggity

NBC got more comedy noms than any other network.

      • Georgie M

Julie, Mo, Bags and Diggity have written words of wisdom.

    • Steve

Wait so Leno is now sinking all the broadcast networks? What a powerful man he is! People need to get over the Jay Leno thing already.

    • Steve

Not to stink up your point sluggo because I think you meant it as a quality comment, but broadcast networks only care for ratings. The cable shows that were nominated most likely dont have very good ratings overall because they only attract to smaller audiences. They would only end up getting cancelled by major networks, considering that sons of anarchy gets around 4 and a half million watchers which is less than even Leno on some days.

      • sluggo

No problem Steve. I actually hope that some of the broadcast net shows that I like that don’t get ratings that they consider adequate, and would be in danger of cancellation, would find a home on some of the basic cable channels (eg, Fringe, Better Off Ted, Chuck), instead of being gone altogether.

      • Steve

We can only hope so. Those shows are great.

      • Aynur

For me these so called lrsoes still look pretty glamorous (nice teeth and hair!). And they all have something going for them. I believe they do their own singing and very well at that. I applaud every attempt to liberate people from preconceived ideas about what constitutes popularity but one (or two or three) Glee series won’t be enough.

  • Josh

Glad to see Matthew Morrison picked up a nod for Glee. He is a really subtle and great actor. Also, how am I or anyone else to choose between Jane Lynch and Chloe Sevigny? Both were the standouts in their respective shows.

    • Tarc

I’d have no problem. Lynch is about a trillion times better in Glee.

      • llevinso

I definitely agree that Lynch should win, and I’m pretty positive that she WILL win, but this is my problem with the Globes in the first place. Why do they insist on grouping the supporting categories together? It’s not fair to the actors.

    • Heather

They should have a best support in a comedy and drama category. that way we won’t have to choose. But it is sinister if it doesn’t go to Lynch.

      • CMD

Here here!!!! Lynch hands down! And Lithgow is a shoe in. If you havent seen Dexter this year then I don’t know what you’ve been doing on Sunday nights (or Monday mornings when I download it cause I don’t get Showtime)

    • Ambient Lite

I love Matthew Morrison, I love Glee – but couldn’t imagine him beating out Alec Baldwin. Not a chance.
I know everything thinks Jane Lynch is brilliant, but I’m kind of meh about her. I don’t think she has a chance in her category either.
Glee is a fun show, but I personally think it’s as good as it is because it’s successful collaboratively. I just don’t see standout actors and actresses there, just a great ensemble.

      • K

Seriously – I live for Sue Sylvester one liners – she is a breath of fresh air! I think she should win supporting actress (and yes I loved Chloe S. in Big Love)! Come on guys – not many out there could pull off what she can! Hilarious!

    • Serena

I don’t think Matthew Morrison in Glee was a good choice. I think he over-emotes in general. Though the dynamic between Jane Lynch and his character, and also between him and Jayma Mays are the real stand-out’s in his work, aside from his obvious talent for singing and dancing. His broadway acting needs to be toned down for the camera. I love that show, it’s hilarious and so much fun to get lost in, considering the volatile times we live in. I hope Glee or Modern Family beat out 30 Rock this year. wish Park & Rec was nominated.

      • CMD

Another comment I agree with. Parks and Rec is hilarious. How does Amy Poler or someone from that show not get a nod. I love Parks and Rec. Also agree with Matthew on Glee, I get no joy out of seeing him on Glee even though I love the show. For me its Steve for the Office. So freakin funny.

      • Natalie

I agree…Matt Morrison overacts. Not saying he isn’t talented but someone else should have gotten his spot.

      • Liz

I think the reason Matthew Morrison overacts is because he’s so used to stage acting. On the stage, you have to make sure your emotion reaches to the balcony; you don’t get close-ups. I think with time, he’ll tone it down. And I believe this point was made by others, but it’s Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical. Not Best Comedic Performance. If we were going for that, I think Chris Colfer would deserve a nod.

In other news, I don’t understand the lack of love for Castle.

  • Adele

I like Glee and all but Matt Morrison (Mr Schu) does not deserve a lead male actor nomination. He’s not been given the material. If gyrating his hips to The Thong Song or being the butt of every curly hair joke in the known universe is enough then I am truly puzzled.

The FNL pass annoys me no end but I am no longer surprised.

The Anna Kendrick nom makes me enormously happy as I think she’s incredibly talented and have since I saw Camp all those years ago. Kudos to her.

    • Heidi

I would have picked any male lead in Modern Family over Matt Morrison. The only scene that killed me was when he learned that Teri was not pregnant. That was powerful. But not funny! I think he does lovesick and hurting much better than just plain funny.

      • Maserda

Perhaps that was the episode he sent in for consideration? Or is that just the process for the Emmys?

      • XSE Drake

There are no clear male leads in Modern Family, which is an ensemble show. And the problem for Modern Family is that the cast is so good and so even, it’s very difficult to pick anyone out.

      • Mo

Any dramatic performance will always win out over the comic ones in the Comedy/Musical categories at the Golden Globes, which kind of negates the point of having a separate category for Comedy if you’re going to lump it in with the dramatic musicals or the comedy-dramas. Oh well.

      • Ambient Lite

Heidi, he’s not supposed to be funny to compete here – they lump comedy and musical in one category.

    • underfor5

Disagree. I think Matthew Morrison pulled off a difficult job – the dramatic anchor in a comedy/musical. He conveyed an authentic portrayal of a teacher who believes in his students when others don’t, with nuance and belief.
Also – the category is Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical (Glee is both), not Best Comedic Performance.

      • dudical32

Morrison is talented. He can sing, dance, but he really demonstrated his ability with his fierce performance during the episode where Mr. Schu finds out his wife was lying to him. There was some serious tension coming from my T.V. that night.

      • Courtney

Morrison is amazingly talented, and I completely agree about him being the dramatic anchor.

      • Vicky

In addition to wonderful acting in the scene where Will learns Terri was lying about the baby is his scenes listening to New Directions compete in sectionals. I got so much enjoyment out of watching his enjoyment.

      • Kaley

I agree with underfor5. Matt Morrison deserves the nomination…he’s hilarious when he needs to be (The Thong Song) but he can also very good at dramatic acting too (the scene where he finds out that Terri is pregnant). I think he is doing an excellent job.

      • Kaley

        *oops i mean “NOT pregnant”

      • FNDJ

Kinda like Obama and the Nobel, deserving but maybe a little early. He’s the character that invites viewers to care for these outcasts, not in a Welcome Back Kotter type of way (aging myself) but in a sincere, heartfelt way. I don’t know who else could make us care for them, sing and dance great and not get completely blown away by Jane Lynch. He’ll only get better.

    • SRB

Come on, people, it’s best comedy OR musical – Morrison is the best male performer on the entire show. Why not give that guy some credit? He’s not trying to go for comedy.

  • Stanantic

What? How could Stana Katic get passed over? She is an amazing actress.

    • castle addict

I’d add Nathan Fillion to this list too. That show is amazing.

      • Heidi

Agreed. Sorry neither were nominated, Nathan especially.

      • Casto

Yep, Nathan Fillion gets to retain the title of most underated actor around. He really deserved a nomination.

    • Abi

Agreed. Why were neither she nor Nathan nominated?

Castle is one of my favourite shows this fall!

      • California Lady

        WORD!

      • Jenit

With you all on no Castle nods. Best show that has come out in awhile. The cast is the best and really interacts well together. Fillion and Katic truly deserve nominations. I mean who can create tension like they can between their characters?? It’s the best…

  • Nom

BOO on Jim Parsons snub, but YAY to Jane Lynch and Neil Patrick Harris! (Latter better win this one at least. It’s about effing time.)

    • Anne

I love, love, love NPH to death, but there is no question in my mind; that award belongs to John Lithgow.

      • Joy

Completely agree! While NPH is great. John Lithgow was phenomenal on Dexter. Absolutely amazing.

      • Trish

Totally agree! Too bad Jennifer Carpenter didn’t get nominated, it was her best work so far for this show.

    • Meredith

Serious BOOOOOOO on Jim Parson’s snub. In my opinion there is no better performance in a comedy show than his.

  • Vivi

A huge WTF?!!!: “LOST”. Where the f*ck is “Lost”. I know you’re not much of a man, Michael, but this past season was all kinds of awesome!

    • Krista

What is that supposed to mean? He’s not much of a man? And *how* does that relate to LOST? (From an über LOST fan p-oed about it not being in the Drama category.)

      • noone

I know that Lost has been nominated in previous years, and totally deserves to not only be nominated but win, too, but seeing as the upcoming season is the last, they should be able to clean up next year.

      • Sabrina

I’m assuming that was a typo that meant to say “fan.”

  • djc

    My big WTF?

Rutina Wesley for True Blood and Jennifer Carpenter for Dexter. Both are supporting actresses who deserve far more credit than they’re given.

    • maltis

Ditto -Jennifer Carpenter – totally deserved a nod!

      • Cheery

Jennifer was definitely stiffed. Sookie over Debra? B*tch, please!

    • XSE Drake

Ditto Rutina! Would have loved a Michelle Forbes nod too.

    • G

Jennifer Carpenter was robbed! Deb was amazing this season–

    • Yoga_Girl

Agreed – Carpenter has been superb this season!

  • Doug

As someone who is just a fan of great television, I have to say that Morrison did not at all deserve the nod. His performance in the fall finale? I think he made it clear that his emotions are way too over the top for a television actor. Stick to broadway, Schu!

    • Grover

Man, the guy just left his wife and was horribly betrayed by her. Glee is all he has left. I thought his reactions were called for.

    • Joan

Jeez..Someone didn’t make the cut for his school musical and is taking it out a great overall performer

    • Sabrina

Glee is, by definition, over the top. I think he plays it perfectly. (You don’t think Sue Sylvester is over the top?)

      • Kaley

Ditto to Sabrina’s comment. EVERYONE is over the top on Glee. Sue, Rachel, Kurt, etc. so why can’t someone be overly emotional? Especially when he’s crying over something he has a passion for (and it’s all he has left, since he now knows he is not going to be a father and he is not with Terri anymore).

  • Belen

Where is Jim Parsons?????? I can’t believe it! And what’s the thing with Simon Baker? He’s just a cute guy on a cute show… not very impressive!
YAY for Hugh and House! (tho House isn’t what it used to be. I still think it’s getting a nom because of Hugh Laurie’s performance: HE IS THE WHOLE SHOW!)

    • Tarc

      This.

    • Cheery

Seriously. Simon Baker should not be in there. Criminal Minds’ Thomas Gibson was robbed!!

      • Moosh

While I heart Simon Baker, YES!!! to the Thomas Gibson. I’d go for Thomas Gibson over Simon Baker since The Mentalist got a nod last year. When has Criminal Minds ever been shown the love?

      • Justin

I definitely agree. Thomas Gibson definitely got robbed. Simon Baker? Please!! Gibson’s performance in episode 100 was so emotional and raw. Hell, I’d pick any of the male characters in Criminal Minds over Simon Baker. I also want to give a big shout-out to the show itself. CM is one of the best dramas on television.

      • Stefani

I also have to agree. Thomas Gibson was robbed. His performances have been stunning every week and he was breath-taking in *100*. He gave one of the best performances this year on any show, network or cable. While Criminal Minds is dark, it is a top 20 show. Hopefully TG will get some love at the Emmys, because after this season, he deserves a chance to compete with fellow dramatic actors.

  • Shaun

SO glad ‘True Blood’ and ‘Glee’ got their noms, all very well deserved!!!But, I have to agree with some of the others, no ‘Lost’ or ‘Big Bang’ love??? what’s up with that?!

  • Jim

Hugh Laurie for best drama actor. Jim Parsons for best comedy actor and NPH for best supporting! This is how it was supposed to play out international critics!! Get with the program! Boo at Jim Parsons snub!

    • Jim

Furthermore I agree Mike I enjoy Glee but it’s more of an ensemble show not really sure how the teacher got a nod and Jim didn’t.. And I just realized Lost wasn’t nominated sheesh

      • Julia

I can’t agree more! I remember Morrison only for his having-out-with-his-wife/crying scene, what is funny in that guy?!?
A Parson is hilarious! I can’t get it why they didn’t add him to the list! That’s just sad!

  • Joyce

Yeah WTF with the cast of Modern Family not getting nominations? Ed O’Neill and Ty Burrell deserves to be on that list.

    • davey

Because the Globes mash all of the SUPPORTING together (drama, comedy, miniseries, t.v movie) it’s very difficult for supporting players on comedy/drama shows to get regular (Emmy) noms.

    • Bob

Ty Burrell? For his Michael Scott impersonation? No thanks.

    • Sabrina

Agree that they should be recognized…but Eric Stonestreet, please! He steals every scene he’s in! Here’s hoping they all get some love at the Emmys when it’s divided between comedy & drama.

  • Lelolai

I think The Big Bang Theory should be up there for Best Comedy. And yes, of course Jim Parsons deserves both a nomination and a win (but really the whole cast is great). Entourage is so played out, I don’t know why they bother. Not a fan of The Office either, but whatever. Glad Toni Colette got a nomination, United States of Tara is brilliant.

  • Hudson

Very happy for True Blood and Glee! Well deserved for both of them.
