Golden Globes 2010: 'Glee' star Jane Lynch on her nomination

Among Glee‘s TV-pack-leading four Golden Globe nominations this morning were actor nods for stars Matthew Morrison, who plays William McKinley High School’s glee club coach Will Schuester, Lea Michele, who plays glee club’s obnoxious-yet-talented singer Rachel Berry, and Jane Lynch, who plays Will’s nemesis, the bare-knuckle-competitive coach of the Cheerios (WMHS’s championship-winning cheerleading squad), Sue Sylvester.

We got the three stars on the phone today to ask about their red-hot new show and find out what it was like to be nominated for Globes just halfway through its first season. Read the Q&A with Lynch below, then check out our interviews with Michele and Morrison.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How did you find out about your nomination?
JANE LYNCH: I woke up to several messages — when I saw the volume of them, I knew it was probably good news. My agent called me three times and was like ‘get up, get up!’ and, you know, I was kind of playing too-cool-for-school and slept through it because I didn’t want to get too excited about anything. But this is really a lovely dream. It was so fun to come to work this morning. The kids are beside themselves with excitement. It’s great.

We talked to Matthew Morrison, and he said he found out about his nomination from a voicemail you left him. I was hoping you might have left him that voicemail in character as Sue…
Oh, I did, actually! I called him a little you-know-what — a little FU-know-what.

Considering their rivalry, I’m sure Sue wouldn’t want Will to win anything.
That would probably be the truth for Sue. And maybe a little bit for me! Just a little bit. A slight dusting of that.

Were you surprised that the Hollywood Foreign Press appreciated the character of Sue and her demeanor?
Well, I wasn’t surprised so much. I think they kind of like those types out there, across the pond. I think there’s a love for that kind of extreme character, you know?

Doesn’t it seem like the Hollywood Foreign Press would be something Sue would lash out at in a segment of “Sue’s Corner”?
Yeah, right! “Who are these foreign people commenting on our work?”

I’ll add in a “Ditto” for Matthew and Lea!

  • Juniper

YES!!! A well-deserved nomination! Congrats to Jane and the cast of Glee! I will actually be watching this year to see if they win… and to see Ricky Gervais host. Hooray!

    • Q

I’m going to be watching to see if she pulls out the zoot suit.

  • chris

Sue Sylvester says things most of us are afraid of saying. Hope Jane wins!

    • insomniac

You’re about to board the Sue Sylvester express. Destination:HORROR!

      • Megan

LOVE IT! this is my favorite new Show! I quote Sue’s lines all the time!

      • Steph

LOL! I am thrilled Jane got her nom! Sue is one of the best characters on television. <3

  • Ceballos

I just finished writing about how I wasn’t sure Morrison deserved a Globe nomination.

This is certainly NOT the case for Jane Lynch. I’d be perfectly ok if they gave her the award now – she’s unequivocally spectacular!

I usually agree with everything you post. But I have to respectfully disagree here. Jane Lynch has superb comic timing, but the character is a bit one-note. At least Morrison imbues his character with a bit more nuance.

      • Ceballos

I agree that the Sue character can be one-note. The repetitiveness of Sue’s “how will I take Glee club down this week?” plots is actually one of several problems I have with the show (which I won’t get into here) that REALLY keep it from being great in my mind and stop me from becoming a full-on “Gleek.”

But, to me, no matter what you may think of the writing, Lynch is simply terrific.

By the way, “respectfully” disagreeing with me doesn’t ease the sting at all.

        You’re dead to me, Crispy.

Did you see the episode though where you find out her sister is mentally disabled? It’s really sweet and subtle and just beautiful what Lynch does there. And when she fell in love for that split second. There really is more to her character than meets the eye.

      • crispy

Hah! I’m not a full-on Gleek yet either… and I imagine we share the same issues with the show.
I did see the episode with her sister; it’s probably my favorite if I had to pick. But unfortunately, that’s the only moment they’ve allowed the character to show any real depth. The writing is horribly uneven, which is my biggest problem with it. The zoot suit episode is better left unmentioned.

      • KingLion

I gotta give a +1 llevinso. Sue is definitely not a one note character, the down syndrome reveal and interaction was an amazing reveal. And when she was spurned by Rod this was also another great moment for Sue cause her reaction was splendid!

      • Ceballos

Yeah, “horribly uneven” writing is pretty much a big clue as to why I can’t fully put my arms around this show.

“Glee” has great zingers, but the writers are generally pretty poor at pacing and fleshing out certain storylines. Still, I’m glad to see the actors recognized for their work.

(Also, I just got a nice boost from my late-afternoon snack…you’re no longer dead to me. I’m over it.)

  • Kisha

i bet that voicemail she left MM was hilarious!Congrats to her and everyone on the show.

    • warped

I know. I’d LOVE to hear that recording!

  • Gregoire

I find it strange and wonderful how much praise and love we give Jane Lynch, somebody who plays the most wicked, unforgiving character on network TV. It just shows the power of her work that she bring some kind of nuance and emotion to the role.

    • whatever

And above all we just love awful characters (Sue Sylvester, Barney Stinson, Ari Gold…) :)

  • insomniac

    Sue rocks!

  • PeterBilt

I’m glad that EW has found its new item to blow now that Twilight’s faded a little already and Arrested Development is long gone

    • Johnification

EW’s been trumping Glee since last MARCH. Back when it was filming. Remember, each post about it was filled with comments like “Who cares? It’ll be great, then cancelled after five episodes because quirky things don’t succeed!”.

And then, boom, a legit pop culture phenomenon.

  • Amy

So beyond happy for Jane Lynch, Matthew Morrison, and Lea Michelle. I’m hoping for a Gleek sweep at the Giolden Globes!!

  • coco

    She’s a lesbian!

    • Dierdre

      And a woman!

    • Deb

Wow, coco….they let you roam around the internet without a helmet?

  • jack hart

she is a big reason on me becoming a GLEEK. congrads

  • Sol

I always knew you would make it. congrats on the nom. I’m rooting for you.

  • Mary McNally

Well done, Glee! Go Jany! This is one Cornell alum who will be rooting for you.

  • Tee

Such a well-deserved nom! She is a delightful part of the show. As fun as the character is, I can’t see another actress bringing her to life as well as Jane Lynch has.

  • Ace

So awesome that Jane Lynch was nominated. Of course she is wonderful on Glee, but she was wonderful on many things even before that.
