Golden Globes 2010: 'Glee' star Matthew Morrison talks about his nomination

Among Glee‘s TV-pack-leading four Golden Globe nominations this morning were actor nods for stars Matthew Morrison, who plays William McKinley High School’s glee club coach Will Schuester, Lea Michele, who plays glee club’s obnoxious-yet-talented singer Rachel Berry, and Jane Lynch, who plays Will’s nemesis, the bare-knuckle-competitive coach of the Cheerios (WMHS’s championship-winning chearleading squad), Sue Sylvester.

We got the three stars on the phone today to ask about their red-hot new show and find out what it was like to be nominated for Globes just halfway through its first season. Read the Q&A with Morrison below, then check out our interviews with Michele and Lynch.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Have you had time to celebrate?
MATTHEW MORRISON: It’s really just talking to friends and family and responding to emails. It’s just been a nonstop morning.

Did you wake up early to watch the nominations?
No. I didn’t. My agent called me, but I was kinda tossing and turning all night because I knew it was happening. But I didn’t wanna watch it.

It’s been such a great year for you guys, and this must be such a great kind of reward after the first 13 aired.
Yeah, well, I’ve had a lot of perspective this morning, just kind of thinking back to when we started this thing and that feeling of hoping people would catch on to it. And then just watching the show come together and being recognized. This is just extra credit now.

Have you talked to any of the cast yet?
I was doing these interviews and Jane Lynch just called me. But I texted with Lea [Michele] and Dianna [Agron, Quinn] and Jenna [Ushkowitz, Tina] and Chris [Colfer, Kurt].

Have you heard from [Glee creator] Ryan Murphy?
Yeah I texted with Ryan this morning.

Are they psyched?
Ryan said, “You realize you’re a huge star now, right?”

You are! What does it mean to get a Golden Globe nomination?
I haven’t really processed that yet. I actually saw a 30 Rock episode not too long ago. Tracy Morgan had a necklace that said EGOT: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony. It’s kind of part of my introduction now. Everyone says “Tony-nominated actor Matthew Morrison.” So now I have another thing to put on there!

Are you going to celebrate the rest of today?
I’m gonna go play a round of golf with my dad.

Well congrats again and that finale was fantastic. I cried like a baby.
Well, we just won sectionals, and now Glee’s going to the Golden Globes. It’s been a good week for us.

I hope your round of golf is equally as successful.
Oh no, it’s gonna be s—ty.

Not to rain on anybody’s parade (“Sectionals” shout out!), but Morrison’s nomination, to me, seems a case of being swept up by the show’s strong momentum.

I suppose Morrison’s performance is fine (and he WAS especially strong in the scene where he found out about Terri’s lie), but most of the year Will often seemed either wishy-washy, clueless or both. (I didn’t think I was supposed to be rooting for Sue in their arguments, but I sure do.)

Congrats to Morrison, but I think Jim Parsons or a “Modern” man (either Ed O’Neill or Ty Burrell) would’ve been even better.

    • maiv

Yeah, I agree, esp since Jim was robbed at the Emmys and now this :(

    • Steph

I completely agree. I love Glee, but I think there are other actors who deserve that spot. I do think he is a fantastic singer(when not rapping) but when he and Sue go at it, all I do is hope and pray Sue gives a good ol’ fashion wedgie or swirlie..or both! He’s honestly, my least favorite character.

    • Kaley

But just because his character has acted clueless this season doesn’t necessarily mean that he doesn’t deserve the nomination…that’s just the way the character is written. That being said, I hope Will isn’t written that way in the future.
Anyway, congrats Matthew Morrison! I think he deserves the nomination and I hope he wins, even though it’s a tough category.

    • Kaley

I also think Jim Parsons is talented though, and I would’ve loved to see him nominated.

As we heard Will’s wife Terr say, he has been weak and unconfident in himself. I think we are seeing a man who gave up a dream finally start to awaken to who he really is. His marriage to Terry has kept him under a fog of unworthiness all these years, and with her betrayal, he finally realized who she is, and who he is! I think he is a great actor, and singer/dancer. Don’t confuse the character’s weaknesses with the actor’s skills. As much as we are annoyed that Will has been a wimp, that same writing has also made Sue a bitc* you love to hate. Obviously, they are leaving room for continued character development. Go Matthew!

    • Kat

Matthew Morrison is great and you are missing it. He plays the character he is suppose to play and he does it well. He can also sing and dance great. did you not see his mashup singing to Rachel when she had the crush on him and also the ballad he sang with Rachel on the same show?

  • graeme

Yeah, Morrison isn’t amazing on the show. But the Globes tend to nominate new shows, and always like to justify the “musical” part of the category. But yeah, don’t expect SAG or Emmy to follow suit.

  • amy

I agree. Schue is probably my least favourite character on the show, and while I think Morrison does a fine job, it’s hardly funnier than Ed O’Neill/Eric Stonestreet/Ty Burrell in Modern Family or Jim Parsons for that matter who, despite my strong dislike for Big Bang Theory, does a terrific job in BBT.

  • Tim

EW continues to cram this low rated show down our throats. Give it a rest.

    • Menchy

Aww darn, and I was looking forward to the CSI: St. Louis and NCIS: Anchorage nominations. Too bad EW and the Golden Globes have some taste.

      • Krista

        Please don’t, you’ll give them ideas…

      • David

Here’s a thought- don’t read the articles about it, and don’t waste even more of your time posting about it. I could care less about ‘Twilight,’ but I understand others enjoy it and that’s their privilege.

    • Amber

thank you! yes i have had too much of glee on ew. its not even THAT good to be honest. if fans would take a step back, i think they would see it.

  • ashley

tim, this show might not be the most high rated show around, but its ratings are pretty good and stable. And since you seem like you do not like this show, then why are you even reading and commenting on this article?

    • Ceballos

Who knows? Maybe Tim was actually talking about “Gossip Girl” or “Melrose Place.”

      • Johnification

I’m just surprised there isn’t a link to his blog on there.

  • Jason

Just remember Arrested Development had horrible ratings. No one how good it really was good until it got canceled.

  • Michael

Congrats Matthew on your nomination! Im a huge fan of the show and appreciate what you contribute…!! All the best on Golden Globes night!

  • Leanne

Wow, what’s with all the downer negativity? The boy’s nominated, can’t you just be happy for him and go about your day?

As Sue would put it – “Your resentment is delicious.”

    Haters can suck it.

All the Best Matt. You DO deserve it!

    • eref

      Agreed!!!

  • cc

Congrats Matt!!! Definitely deserving especially after the Will finding out about Terri scene. And Will might not be the funniest character on the show, but the category is Comedy and Musical, not just Comedy and his acting is amazing. So good luck to him.

    • queue55

ITA! And let’s not forget his amazing duets on the show, especially “Alone” with Kristin Chenowith (listen to the full version on the first Glee CD!)

  • econruth

Will is absolutely my favorite character on this show. Singing, dancing, looking hot… he is the glue that holds this show together.

    • Ivannia

THANK yoooou!! How can people NOT see that!?

  • tsk tsk

Why is everyone so mean spirited on this site? Matthew is awesome, as are Lea and Jane, and have all done amazing work on this show. Quit throwing verbal slurpees in their faces. If you don’t like them, don’t read and don’t comment.

    • Ceballos

I don’t know if this comment refers specifically to me. I don’t think I said anything overly harsh about Morrison…more than anything, I just don’t care for the way the character is written. If what I said, qualifies as “mean-spirited” then I suppose some people need thicker skins.

Mostly, I just thought there were a few actors (Parson, Burell, O’Neill, Stonestreet) that were more deserving of a nom.

  • julie

you know it is funny.. but although i think like everyone in the cast of glee he is important part of it.. if the cast were different i don’t think it would work… but lea and jane obviously are duh! …

his performance when he found out about terri… was awesome… you could really empathize with him on how well in that brief moment there was anger and hurt and confusion!!!!!!!!!!

congrats to the whole cast of glee.. that show deserves every nomination it caught

  • jmiklane

Actually, I fully expected him to get nominated. The people who say he’s not funny enough should look at the award for which he is nominated. Best Actor in a MUSICAL or comedy series. Being that he sings and dances quite well in pretty much every episode, I’d say he could potentially be a front-runner to win if you look at it from that perspective. You don’t have to be a comedian to do well in this category. There just haven’t been any MUSICAL TV series. Let’s look at the winners this decade in the musical/comedy MOVIES: Almost Famous, Moulin Rouge, Chicago, Walk the Line, Dreamgirls, Sweeney Todd? How about actors who won in the musical/comedy movie categories: Richard Gere, Jamie Foxx, Joaquin Phoenix, and Johnny Depp. Not for comedies, of course, but for MUSICALS. They weren’t necessarily funny either. So while I agree that maybe Matthew Morrison is not the funniest guy, to say that he is undeserving or out of place is quite absurd. It’s the Golden Globes, and they always nominate people who sing and dance in musical categories. It seems like a given to me.

    • Sarah

Very good point about the category. Bottom line: the guy is an enormously talented triple-threat. And I love that he referenced the EGOT in this interview(-:

  • pop

i love him more now knowing he watched 30 rock.

    • pop

      er, watches

  • Amber

Enough of Glee already! EW must get paid to promote them or something.

    • Lauren

Yes that must be it…. It can’t be that the show is good or deserves it.
I don’t understand all the Glee-hate… You don’t like it? Why are you reading articles about it?
