Scoop: 'Soul Food' thesp spies 'Undercovers' gig

THIS JUST IN: Soul Food grad Boris Kodjoe has landed the male lead in The Undercovers, the new NBC  husband-and-wife NBC spy drama from J.J. Abrams and Josh Reims, sources confirm.

Kodjoe will play Steven, the sharp, smart, and very attractive half of the show’s central couple.

Earlier this week, Gerald McRaney was tapped to play the CIA operative who serves as the duo’s boss.

Still to be cast: Steven’s wife, Samantha.

Thoughts about Kodjoe’s casting? Bold choice, no?

GREAT choice! And kudos to NBC and JJ for going out on a limb.

    • Chichi

Lucy Liu as the wife for the effin’ win!

      • Ace

Chichi – That would be aaaamazing. She has already shown she can do action in Kill Bill and Charlie’s Angels.

      • Yesenia

Oh I would love that! She was great in Charlie’s Angels.

      • Amanda

Lucy Liu would be awesome! She was my favorite from Lipstick Jungle–I’d love to have her on TV again!

      • Ann

Lucy Liu would be awesome.. Although she wasn’t in Lipstick Jungle. You are either thinking of Cashmere Mafia or Lindsey Price

      • David

        YES! YES! YES!

  • J.G.

Bold AND fantastic choice on JJ’s part.

  • Don J

Not a bad choice. Boris is a good looking guy and will IMO attract alot of female viewers.

  • Chris

Bold choice? No he’s a great actor! I can’t wait 2 watch it! JJ never lets me down!

  • dave

Hmm, this sounds like it could be pretty good. Is this supposed to be a fall 2010 show?

  • L

Seriously?!! JJ just rocked my world… Love it!

  • Lau

I do not like this, it sounds completely different to Chuck yet it’s about spies.

    • Yesenia

And that’s a bad thing? Why would they want to have another Chuck?

  • Tori

Great choice! He’s super attractive AND will be great for the action scenes. I do have to admit, I was very surprised to read this news this morning. Being a black female, it’s always great to see black actors get cast in lead roles on television. It doesn’t happen very often. I’m excited to see who they’ll get for Samantha.

    • Stella

I agree with you Tori! I’m always so delighted when black actors are given equal screen time. And it doesn’t hurt that he’s great to look at and a talented actor to boot. If JJ casts a black actress opposite Boris I think I will love him forever. Sharon Leal anyone?

      • joe

sharon leal!!!!! yesssss!!!! somebody send this link to JJ immediately!!!

      • michka

I’m delighted about a black actor landing a lead role but IMO there’s no way his on-screen wife would be a “sista”. They will probably cast a latina or a brunette but no blonde or gingerhead.

    • Brooke

White woman here, but agreed that it was really nice to click on this link and see a black man listed as the lead of a show. I’m pulling for a black woman to be his on-screen partner.

      • Sarah

As a white woman, I was too pleasantly surprised to see a black lead (and boy is he attractive!). As far as who is cast as his wife, I don’t really care what race she is, as long as the two have chemistry.

      • Anne

I agree that Boris is an EXCELLENT choice. However, and I’m sad to admit this, the show has a better chance of surviving its first season if his on-screen partner is white. I’d love to see more Af-Am leads on network TV, but I doubt the network will let that happen. It’ll be interesting to see who they pick…I agree that Lucy Liu would be an interesting choice, but don’t be surprised when they pick a white blonde (or brunette) girl.

  • T

Don’t like it either….bad actor! Too bad, sounds like a great show.

  • Sigh…….

Who cares who else they get!! Not like I’ll notice anyway :) That man is unbelievably gorgeous. But if I had to pick, Paula Patton would be my first choice (if she would do TV). Those two together!!!??? Our televisions would MELT!

    • renee

paula patton can’t act. how about using his real wife, nicole ari parker. or vanessa williams. nia long.

      • Tori

Nicole Ari Parker would definitely work for me. But they have kids. It seems a little less likely that they’d both have time to be leads on a network television show that will require a demanding work schedule. I was thinking Kerry Washington could be good too.

      • Sarah

        Ohh love Kerry Washington!

      • No offense to N.Ari Parker…

Please NO Nicole Ari Parker! I don’t want to see “Soul Food Part 2, The JJ Abrams Files”. He needs to be able to stand out on his own. I LOVE the Nia Long idea. She matches his sexiness for sure. And since her show just got cancelled…..any thoughts on Rebecca Rominj?? I would love to see her kick some ass.

  • Abby

Nice looking guy but don’t like the bald look!

  • Ryan

Paula Patton would be good but I totally vote for a white actress. There is still a race problem in casting. Its the reason Eva Mendes was in Hitch. Will Smith knew black women and white men would have a hard time seeing him with a white woman love interest. I’ve not seen this guy in anything but I’ll take your word he’s good (and I’m a big McRaney fan). Here’s holding out for Paula Patton

  • melissa Malcolm

they should cast sanaa lathin as his wife

    • Austin

GREAT call! I would flip if they did that!

    • Megan

That would be AWESOME!! I LOVE her and I mean c’mon did you all see her performance in The Family that Preys??? Unbelievable!!

  • Chele Belle

I recommend Jill Marie Jones who played Toni on Girlfriends.

    • Deiko

Where is Jill Marie Jones? Does she even act anymore?

  • T

I really like Moon Bloodgood (I think her name is) or even Marsha Thomason. Marsha has the JJ Abrams “in” from her time on “Lost” and the British accent would be hot. And if Stacey Dash had more chops, she could fit perfectly. I just hope and pray it’s not a Gabrielle Union or someone boring like that. Sanaa…..maybe…but would still be bland-ish. I can’t really think of any white actresses that I would be dying to see in that roll (Mila Kunis maybe), although I’m sure there’s plenty out there. Whoever it is, they need to step up the heat factor since their co-stars are already fire. And once again…..finger’s crossed for Paula Patton.

    • tjj50

T, what a great idea. I LOVE moon! She and Taye Diggs had really good chemistry in “Daybreak” a couple of years ago.” Plus, she’s ridiculously gorgeous.
