Starz must be feeling mighty confident about its new series Spartacus: Blood and Sand. The pay cabler has renewed the big budget action adventure for a second season — a whole month before the premiere of season 1. The 13-episode second season will begin production early next year.
In honor of the early pickup, I present you with this exclusive (and totally NSFW) first look image from season 1, debuting Jan. 22…

“Joey, do you like TV shows about gladiators?”
Airplane, one of the best movies ever.
I want to see this but I’m too cheap to get Starz. I do miss Lucy Lawless.
Do you have Netflix? They streamed Party Down (another Starz series). They may do the same with this one. I have it in my queue, just in case.
Ooh, thanks for the heads-up.
Rushes off to add it to her queue.
I’m going to check this out because I really miss the show Rome, which was on HBO. If it is overtly religious I’ll stop watching it though. I hate that crap. I just want to see the history and interpersonal dynamics.
but isn’t religion part of the history?
As I understand it, the show is nothing but graphic sex & violence, and shifty personal politics.
I stopped wondering about this show taking a religious bent after the Ausiello/Lucy Lawless conversation about merkins during ComicCon.
LOL, so was “Rome”! I’ll definitely be watching.
the story is set before Christ is even born, don’t worry
Its human history not crap. There are an awful lot of people interested in what you call crap.
hey is this worth putting Starz back on for it?
“Overtly reglious?” So, if they enter a temple of a god or goddess then you’re changing the channel but if they decorate their hair with a wreath in honor of Athena but don’t mention her by name then you’re cool with it?
Advisor, regardless of whether we like it or not, there are people in the world with crazy and absolutely unnecessary double standards. I call them “fools”, and try my best to no longer pay them any attention. Though you made an EXCELLENT point, it would bode well for both of us to simply ignore anything else that person had to say.
That pic is totally NOT NSFW!! The trailer for the show is, but the pic is fine.. its no worse than a dude in a speedo…
I may be missing something, but I think it’s his pubic hair that makes it NSFW.
Jeez, and I thought those were just thigh shadows…
The dude needs some manscaping!
I hope to be able to see this series, it looks great and I like most of the stuff the people behind it have produced over the years.
There have been a bunch of promo pictures of the gladiators how about some scantily clad actresses or a nude of Lucy Lawless?
I hear she’s in some sex scenes so steamy they’d make Gabrielle REALLY blush. lol! As a once-upon-a-time Xena fan that’s had a longtime sub to Starz, I absolutely cannot wait for this!!
Why renew a series about a gladiator who we knows dies at the end of it?
Because he’s hot! You should see him in Men’s Health.
I think you can assume quite easily that this will not be slavish to historical accuracy, and did you not see Titanic or Schindler’s List because you knew how it was going to end?
the rebellion lasted for several years, and they cane build it up and make it last
Doesn’t Starz stream with a Netflix subscription? Looking forward to this one.
Michele, yes it does. I created netflix to watch Party Down, but I’m definetly keeping my subscription to watch Spartacus. Who can resist explicit violence and built up Gladiators?
Oh, good news: Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, responsible for the best Dollhouse episodes, secured jobs in the writting staff os Spartacus second season. That makes me believe a little bit more in the quality of these scripts
Guess that means Summer Glau will show up during the 2nd season.
If you have Netflix, you should be able to watch this streaminng online or through your XBox 360. Looking forward to this show. It’s got a great creative team behind it.
Seriously!?! Awesome! I didn’t know that. I just got Netflix and now I’m even more excited!!
I’ll watch it if there’s full frontal male nudity.
Not only is their nudity but there is also the most graphic sex ever seen on television.
Can’t wait!
Well, Rome had a couple shots of Full Frontal Men so it’s a good bet that this show will follow suit. But I’m sure the women will get much more exposuer (literally and figuratively). That’s always the way. *sigh*
