Discovery pulls plug on Michael Jackson autopsy special

Discovery has canceled plans to air its Michael Jackson autopsy TV special after the late singer’s estate publicly protested and more than 9,000 fans signed an online petition urging the cable network to shelve the program. Discovery released a statement reading, “Given the commencement of legal proceedings beginning next week, and at the request of Michael Jackson’s estate, the scheduled broadcast of the medical documentary related to Michael Jackson’s official autopsy has been postponed indefinitely.”

The special was scheduled to air in some European markets on Jan. 13, and there were no plans for its broadcast in the United States. Jackson’s doctor at the time of his death, Dr. Conrad Murray, has a hearing scheduled for Jan. 4 to determine whether he will stand trial for involuntary manslaughter in the singer’s death.

'American Idol' scoop: Ray Chew likely the new bandleader, but will we see much of the band?

Ray-Chew-IdolImage Credit: Paul Morigi/WireImage.comSeasoned television music director Ray Chew (SOS Saving Ourselves — Help for Haiti; the 2008 Democratic National Convention) will likely become the new bandleader for season 10 of American Idol, EW has confirmed, replacing Rickey Minor, who left Idol at the end of season 9 to be the new bandleader on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. (The Hollywood Reporter first reported Chew landing the Idol gig.)

Chew actually joined the Idol team this month during the new Las Vegas audition round, although at press time it was unclear whether his deal had been finalized for the bandleader gig for the rest of the season. Whether audiences will get to see much of Chew and the Idol band this season, however, remains very much an open question. Idol exec producer Ken Warwick tells EW exclusively that a revamped set this season could relocate the Idol band off camera. “At the moment, the [upper] tier that was where the band was is now going to be audience,” says Warwick. “The plan is that the band will come out when required. There’s going to be a whole new kind of arena feel to the whole proceeding.” As with much of Idol, these changes could still be revised several times over, but the move would be in keeping with the newfound emphasis on the contestants as vocal performers (e.g. the consistent drumbeat that they will no longer be able to “hide behind their guitars”). The last time the band remained mostly behind the scenes on Idol was back in season 3, when the show featured vocal powerhouses Fantasia Barrino, Jennifer Hudson, and La Toya London.

'Chuck' co-creator Chris Fedak answers your questions in this week's Spoiler Room

Chuck-SpoilersImage Credit: Justin Lubin/NBCChuck co-creator Chris Fedak didn’t seem too surprised that the show’s fans banded together to conquer the Spoiler Room Special Edition Poll with the fervor of 100 hungry mall-goers descending on a pile of $5 footlongs. He’s come to know the breadth of their power well. But he was still very honored.

Thus, shortly before Santa brought me an abundance of new shoes and a ton of TV on DVD, Fedak hopped on the phone  to tackle some of the inquiries you sent in. Chuck fans, I present the fruits of your voting and question-asking labors.

Janine asked: Have they decided on a name for baby Awesome yet?
Fedak tells me the answer is yes, and unfortunately it’s not Awesome Jr. or Mini-Awesome — at least officially. But do look for an upcoming episode where all the characters get into the baby name debate. Specifically, how unique it should be.

Kristin asked: Can we expect any more Awesome missions? I love watching him freak out :)
As we all do. Lucky for us he has his biggest mission to date coming up: fatherhood. After baby Awesome is born around episode 13, expect to see infant-centric plotlines (think insomnia and fecal matter) that will find our Awesomeness in a mini identity crisis. “We’re going to watch Ellie and Awesome, who are the perfect couple, having a baby [and it] is a test. Is Awesome still the most awesome guy in the world when you have a baby keeping you up for 99 percent of the night?” Fedak says.

R asked: Yay, Chuck FTW! I guess the only question I have is “When should we expect the epic proposal that seems to be coming?” But I think I can make a good guess at that.
Your guess might not be as good as you think. READ FULL STORY »

OWN launch on Jan. 1: What to expect from Oprah Winfrey

Oprah-WinfreyImage Credit: Janet Mayer/PR PhotosIn less than 48 hours, Oprah Winfrey is hoping her fans will consider nursing their New Years Eve hangovers with some fresh cable programming. The Oprah Winfrey Network will officially kick off at noon on New Years Day with an introductory special dubbed Oprah’s Guide to OWN: The New Oprah Winfrey Network.  Hosted by the Queen of Daytime herself, the hour-long program will recap Winfrey’s mission to “entertain, inform and inspire people to live their best lives” on what used to be the Discovery Health Channel (OWN’s a  joint venture between Harpo Inc. and Discovery Communications).

The network will be available in 85 million homes.

OWN’s day one lineup will mostly include sneak peeks of some of its original series, including Kidnapped by the Kids and Miracle Detectives. Later in the evening, the network will fall back on what Winfrey does best – her talk show. Look for a several hours of Oprah: Behind the Scenes throughout the weekend, not to mention more sneak peeks of her fresh programming, which will include a mix of original series, specials, original documentaries and acquired movies. To date, a total of 22 original series have been announced, including Cristina Ferrare’s Big Bowl of Love, Enough Already! With Peter Walsh, In the Bedroom with Dr. Laura Berman and The Gayle King Show. For more details on the schedule, click here.

Meanwhile, more than 15,000 people auditioned for Your Own Show: Oprah’s Search for the Next TV Star, which will premiere on Jan. 7.  The mammoth “talent” pool was whittled down to 10 people, who will be guided by hosts Nancy O’Dell and Carson Kressley through challenges to see if they have what it takes to host their own show (which just happens to be the grand prize). OWN released these details on the 10 finalists:  READ FULL STORY »

'Vampire Diaries' scoop: A couple hundred actors have read for Klaus

vampire-diaries-castingImage Credit: Quantrell Colbert/The CWFans of The Vampire Diaries are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Klaus — the oldest, most vindictive, and so far unseen vampire who’ll want to sacrifice Elena to break the curse that keeps most vampires from walking in the sun (and thereby seal the fates of werewolves to forever change on the full moon whether they want to or not). It’s a killer part that the exec producers aren’t taking the casting of lightly, even if Kevin Williamson did joke with us earlier this month about wanting to just dye Ian Somerhalder’s hair blond. EP Julie Plec estimates a couple hundred actors have now read for the role. “We’ve been getting great tapes out of England and Australia. That’s what excites me: This idea that there might be somebody out there that no one’s really familiar with yet that can be a new fresh face that we can exploit…in all the good ways,” Plec tells EW. “I think our show works so well because we don’t really stunt cast. That being said, if there’s some big hot TV star that’s available that we love, then… As I always joke, I have my Joshua Jackson fantasy — Pacey in Mystic Falls.”

Fans have been more than happy to offer their picks online. “We like the people on Twitter who are like ‘Alexander Skarsgard has to be Klaus!’ I’m like really? ‘Cause that’s original,” Plec says, laughing. READ FULL STORY »

Snooki's New Year's Eve ball drop moved to Jersey Shore

SnookiImage Credit: Bob Charlotte/PR Photos New York wouldn’t have her, but New Jersey will. According to The New York Times, MTV will still drop Jersey Shore star Snooki in a ball during its New Year’s Eve broadcast — only it will be happening in Seaside Heights as opposed to Times Square. Oh, and it will probably tape Thursday instead of airing live Friday night.

On Wednesday, organizers of the Times Square celebration confirmed to EW that the Snooki stunt was a no-go saying, “The request to have her in a separate ball on a set-back roof came too late and was too impractical to fit in to our outdoor events.” On Thursday, Seaside Heights borough clerk Diane Stabley confirmed to the Times that MTV applied for a permit to perform the stunt there on Wednesday. “It kind of got sprung on us,” she said. MTV did not return EW’s request for comment.

Michael Jackson estate demands Discovery Channel cancel autopsy show

Michael Jackson’s estate is demanding the Discovery Channel call off plans for a prime time show set to air Jan. 13 in the United Kingdom claiming to re-enact the star’s autopsy, the Associated Press is reporting. In an open letter sent to Discovery Communications on Wednesday, John Branca and John McClain of Jackson’s estate condemned the show as “in shockingly bad taste,” and inspired only ”blind desire to exploit Michael’s death, while cynically attempting to dupe the public into believing this show will have serious medical value.” Especially at issue was a print advertisement for the show of a body covered with a sheet, with one hand exposed wearing Jackson’s iconic sequined glove; Branca and McClain call the ad “debased, sick and insensitive.”

When reached by EW, U.S. and international reps for the Discovery Channel had no comment. Fans of the late singer started an online petition protesting the programming earlier this month that now has more than 9,000 signatures. On Dec. 13, the group posted a response it received from the Discovery Networks Viewer Relations department: “We are very sorry to hear that you have been disappointed by the scheduled broadcast of Michael Jackson’s Autopsy. Our programming covers a wide variety of topics, which we appreciate at times may not suit the tastes of some of our viewers,” it reads. “Michael Jackson was one of the world’s most important music artists in modern times. Throughout his life there was wide-ranging speculation about medical conditions that affected him. This documentary examines at the actual medical facts around those conditions to determine the true cause of his death, utilizing the official coroners’ report and professional opinions from a range of leading medical experts. We value all of our viewers’ feedback and will pass your comments on to the programming department.”

Conan O'Brien rocks the under-34 set

conan-obrienImage Credit: TBSAdults between the ages of 18-34 have definitely drifted to TBS to get their late night fix: Through his first six weeks at his new network, Conan O’Brien has ranked as TV’s top late-night talk show among adults 18-34, according to TBS stats. The median age of CONAN was 33 for the first six weeks - tying with TBS’s Lopez Tonight as late-night TV’s youngest talk show.

CONAN wrapped up the last week before the holidays (Dec. 20-23) with an average of 530,000 adults 18-34. Overall, the show averaged 1.3 million viewers for the week.

During the period from Sept. 28 to Dec. 27, TBS has ranked in second place among all basic cable nets in adults 18-34 and adults 18-49, behind ESPN. USA finished at No. 3 in both demos.

Time Warner Cable contract dispute may rob subscribers of broadcast networks

Time Warner Cable subscribers throughout the east coast could find themselves without access to the major broadcast networks come Jan. 1. According to an Associated Press report, Sinclair Broadcast Group is asking that the cable provider — which is no longer affiliated with Time Warner, EW’s parent company — pay a larger amount for the right to carry signals from 33 of its stations in 21 markets, including affiliates of all four networks. If the two conglomerates cannot resolve the dispute by January 1, those stations could go dark — although News Corp., which owns the Fox network, has already said that it will provide programming for Time Warner subscribers if local affiliates do get pulled from the airwaves. (In October, Cablevision customers in the New York area suddenly found their TV sets Fox-free after the cable company and the network failed to close a new carriage deal.) Time Warner Cable has said that it is still prepared to negotiate; according to Sinclair, the cable giant has not submitted a counteroffer since rejecting Sinclair’s last proposal.

Snooki's New Year's Eve ball drop in Times Square officially a no-go

Snooki_240.jpg Image Credit: Bob Charlotte/PR PhotosIt was too good (or bad) to believe: Jersey Shore star Snooki will not ring in the New Year on MTV from inside a ball descending at midnight in Times Square (first reported by PopEater). In a statement to EW, the Times Square Alliance and Countdown Entertainment, co-producers of Times Square New Year’s Eve, confirm the stunt is a no-go: “It was never intended or requested for Snooki to be in the actual New Year’s Eve Ball in Times Square. The request to have her in a separate ball on a set-back roof came too late and was too impractical to fit in to our outdoor events.” MTV has not responded to EW’s request for comment on whether it’s seeking a new location for its ball, or if the idea itself has been dropped.

'Falling Skies' trailer: Noah Wyle battles aliens in Steven Spielberg's new TNT series

AMC has zombies. HBO has vampires. And this summer, TNT will be getting aliens. The basic cable channel released its first trailer for Falling Skies, the upcoming Steven Spielberg-produced series about life on Earth six months after an alien invasion. Of course, nobody does ETs better than Spielberg, so our expectations for this two-minutes of footage were pretty high. We were not disappointed. There’s a creepy little kids voice-over setting up the plot (“They didn’t want to be friends — not at all…”), a couple of classic Spielbergian reaction shots (close up on star Noah Wyle gazing into the heavens with astonishment), and a money shot at the end showing one of the multilegged extraterrestrials in full frame. Sure, some of the CGI looks like it might have been done on an iPad, but we’ll still be tuning in when the show arrives in June. Check it out below:  READ FULL STORY »

First Look: Ed Asner returns to TV!

Melissa Peterman describes her new CMT show, Working Class, as a ”fish-out-of water family sitcom.” Peterman (formerly of Reba) plays a single mom — “two ex-husbands, three kids” — who takes a job at a frou-frou grocery store, where she works alongside her neighbor Hank, played by TV legend Ed Asner. “I have moments where I’m trying to do a scene with him and I freeze — he has seven Emmys!” laughs Peterman. “I’m a Minneapolis girl originally, and Mary Tyler Moore is huge for me. He’s Lou Grant! And he won an Emmy for playing Lou Grant funny, and serious [in the Mary Tyler Moore spin-off drama Lou Grant]. It’s crazy. He told me to quit gushing, and I said, ‘Let me worship you, old man!’”

Exclusive 'No Easy Decision' preview: Why MTV's special report on abortion is worth watching

MTV airs its stand-alone special about teen abortion, No Easy Decision, tonight at 11:30 p.m. — and having previewed it exclusively, I can report that it’s as sensitive, unflinching, and brave as the network’s hit series 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom (which have yet to tackle, and have barely mentioned, the A-word). Most of the hour follows Markai and James, a couple featured in the second season of 16 and Pregnant, as they wrestle with how to handle Markai’s second pregnancy less than a year after giving birth to daughter Za’karia. At the six-week mark, they decide, through heartwrenching discussions with each other, a friend, and Markai’s mother, to end the pregnancy mainly due to severe financial constraints. (James explains that he wants a better life for his daughter than he had growing up: “I’ve been without water, I’ve been without lights, I’ve been without food.”) And while pro-life critics will likely find fault with the show just for existing, no one can accuse the documentarians of making abortion look easy or fun. We witness everything from Markai’s tearful (and informative for viewers) call to the clinic to ask about abortion methods, to a post-procedure argument with James during which he refers to the unborn fetus as a “thing.” As she snaps, “You will never feel my pain,” it’s clear that we won’t, either, unless we’ve been through a similar situation. But this special gets as close as possible.

Articulate in-studio discussions moderated by Dr. Drew Pinsky follow the documentary footage — first with Markai and James, then with two other young women who chose abortion as teenagers. With one in three women ending a pregnancy sometime in their lives, it’s certainly worth exploring in detail — and with the heated controversy surrounding the issue, it’s hard to overstate how courageous it is for these girls to share their stories with the world. “No one is pro-abortion,” Markai explains, “but you have to do what’s right.”
