'Jersey Shore' back for a second season on MTV

Tags:

MTV announced late Friday that it has ordered a second season of Jersey Shore, its controversial yet wildly successful reality show about a group of youths who rent a beach house. The network ordered 12 more episodes that will begin airing this summer. The plan is to follow season 1′s Pauly D, Mike, Snooki, Jenni, Sammi, Ronnie, and Vinny as they “escape the cold northeast and find themselves in a new destination,” according to a network statement.

“Our audience has fallen in love with Jersey Shore and its amazing cast who have really grown together as a family,” said Tony DiSanto, MTV’s president of programming, in a statement. “That bond gives the show its heart, and we’re thrilled to reunite these friends.”

Shore was the No. 1 original cable series in January among persons 12-34. The season finale on Jan. 21 attracted an impressive 4.8 rating in the key demo — a 30 percent jump over the previous series high. MTV plans to air the complete first season before the Super Bowl kickoff on Feb. 7, beginning at 9 a.m. The entire season — including some uncensored moments — is also available for pre-order online.

Breaking: NBC renews 'Parks and Recreation'

I’m thrilled to report that NBC has renewed Parks and Recreation for a third season. According to The Wrap, the show had certain “production timing issues” that made the early pickup necessary. Yeah, I don’t know what that means either. I also don’t care. I’m just happy TV’s most-improved comedy is coming back! Who’s with me?!

'All My Children' creator on cancellation of 'As the World Turns' and 'Guiding Light': 'could have been saved'

In Los Angeles recently to celebrate the 40th anniversary of All My Children, creator Agnes Nixon — aka the 82-year-old queen of daytime television — talked about her show’s controversial move to the west coast, the future of her other soap One Life to Live, and whether CBS made a mistake in canceling two of its daytime dramas.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: If you had to single out one crowning achievement in those 40 years, what would it be?
AGNES NIXON:
All the socially relevant stuff, like the storyline about AIDS. The lesbian and gay story. Because of my having grown up in Nashville, Tenn., a very segregated city, being able to have integrated the show was to me the most important thing.

Have you had a chance to look at the new studio in Los Angeles for All My Children?
It’s three times as big as what we had in New York, which is so exciting. The sets are left up now. It’s just amazing. They’re more beautiful. The problem in New York was they had to be trucked back and forth every day. READ FULL STORY »

Grammys producer on Sunday's Michael Jackson tribute: 'He is looking down and saying...they are doing right'

During Sunday’s telecast of the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards, the show will feature the never-before-seen 3-D mini-movie for Earth Song that was created by Michael Jackson for his This Is It tour. Grammys executive producer Ken Ehrlich talked to EW.com about the decision to air the film, and how he tried to persuade Jackson to appear on the awards show last year.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Tell us about your decision to pay tribute to Michael Jackson.
KEN EHRLICH:
Last year at this time, it was the 25th anniversary of Thriller and I was talking about having Justin Timberlake, Chris Brown – before the troubles – and Ne-Yo do a whole thing that ended with Michael. It would have started with two or three of them pretending to be Michael, and then Michael would be revealed. I pitched it to him, and I thought I had him. And he just said, “I’m not ready.. .I’ll be with you next year.” It wasn’t to be.

I came to Michael’s last rehearsal for the live show to meet about another project and coincidentally, he was watching the 3-D film for Earth Song. I could see what it meant to him. He told me it was as important or more important than anything else in the concert show because there was the message about preserving the earth. After we did his memorial service and started thinking about what to do for the Grammys, I did think about what (tributes) were done on other shows. Whenever I worked with Michael he’d say, “Kenny, let’s do something that no one has ever done before.” This is something that no one’s ever done before – certainly not on an awards show. I’m an old guy, kind of emotional. There is a part of me that thinks he is looking down at this and saying they are doing right by me. READ FULL STORY »

Ask Ausiello: Spoilers on 'Glee,' 'NCIS,' 'House,' 'Castle,' 'Fringe,' and more!

Got a scoop request? An anonymous tip you’re dying to share? Just want to say hi? You can send any/all of the above to ausielloscoop@ew.com

Question: Any information on what’s going on with Tony and Ziva on NCIS? More than a few hints were dropped in Tuesday’s episode that suggest something went on between the two of them in Paris. —Jason
Ausiello:
Funny story. Just hours before the episode aired, I asked exec producer Shane Brennan if there would be any significant movement on the ‘Tiva’ front in the coming months. Here’s what he said: “I’ll let the ‘Jetlag’ episode answer that, because I think it does. I don’t want to be more specific than that. People should watch that episode and read between the lines.” They so did it it’s not even funny.

Question: I’m hearing rumors Abby and McGee might be reuniting on NCIS. Please say it isn’t true! —Jo
Ausiello:
Funny story: All Shane Brennan would divulge is, “Something begins to happen [with them] later in the season.” Okay, that one wasn’t so funny. READ FULL STORY »

'NCIS' versus 'American Idol': Mark Harmon is gaining on Simon Cowell

American Idol is still referred to as the Death Star in Hollywood, but it’s not entirely immune from the charms of Mark Harmon: last night’s original episode of NCIS attracted 20.15 million viewers — the drama’s closest competitive position ever to the Fox talent show in the demographic (24.19 million). In fact, NCIS doesn’t appear to be impacted at all by Simon Cowell and Co.; the drama, now in its seventh season, is actually up 12 percent in viewers and 16 percent in adults 18-49. At the same time, Idol doesn’t seem to be affected by the presence of Harmon and Michael Weatherly, either; though its ratings aren’t nearly as stratospheric as they were in the early years, Idol is still up 3 percent in viewers and 4 percent among adults 18-49 versus last year (a side note, however: last night’s episode was actually down versus last Tuesday by 8 percent in viewers and 12 percent in adults 18-49). In the end, Idol (naturally) won the timeslot while NCIS was second.

For the season, Fox is still down on Tuesdays by 23% in viewers while CBS is actually up by 10%. No one else has anything to brag about for the night: ABC is down by 13%, NBC, 11%, and CW, 21%.
