Ratings: CBS wins the night, ABC comedies return with a bang

CBS may have won the evening with the celeb prank show I Get That a Lot and the 36th Annual People’s Choice Awards, but third-place ABC also has reason to celebrate. Modern Family scored its highest ratings in both total viewers and adults 18-49 since its premiere. It was the night’s top show among the latter, coveted demo. Cougar Town posted its highest numbers since mid-October, while the 8:30 p.m. episode of The Middle managed a series high in 18-49. Even though Ugly Betty, debuting in its new non-Friday time slot, couldn’t quite defeat Jay Leno, it did hit season highs in both 18-49 and total viewers.

10.2 for modern family! WOW!!! Ugly Betty still scored higher that alot of their friday numbers so its all good… *fingers crossed*

    • Nikkido

But Leno beat it. I didn’t think Leno could beat anything.

      • paige

he destroyed Eastwick. Its the first day- I’m being optimistic

      • Krista

not by much though.. idk if thats a good thing or bad thing…

      • Sarah

Eh, maybe some Betty fans were watching the People’s Choice Awards. Maybe next week will improve.

      • Amber

Beatty beat leno from 10 to 10:30

    • jared

Go away, Betty. If you can’t beat Leno, you don’t deserve to live.

      • Nick T

        You’re a poo-face! Betty’s been awesome this season!
PS – Best Cougar Town ep so far! Long live Phoebe!

  • Rob

I know Ugly Betty did better in this slot but if you can’t beat Jay Leno then your probably gonna get cancelled.

    • D

Gotta give the fans a few weeks to find it again. I’m thrilled Betty’s back to a decent night of the week.

  • Dave

As a fan of Eastwick still upset over its cancellation, I will be a annoyed if ABC does not cancel Ugly Betty, since its ratings are just about as low. Sure, it got its highest ratings so far this season, but that could have been predicted by anyone. Of course they would be higher than usual since its not on Friday anymore. But the ratings will begin to slip a little and it will probably drop to just under 5 million in the next week or two. Same as Eastwick.

  • JD

I hadn’t watched Ugly Betty in a while and i’m glad it’s back on a decent night.

  • brynna

hopefully people will keep tuning in to Betty and the ratings will grow. Alot of people might not know about the switch. So fingers crossed!

The Middle did not come on here in Houston. We had a 1 hour special for the BCS championship game tonight. I imagine most of Alabama and Texas did not get to see or DVR it.

  • Ambient Lite

CBS Wins! (insert cheesy laugh track here)

  • jason.

So long as it’s enough to keep both Modern Family and Cougar Town on the air, I don’t care if CBS won (though good for the Big Bang Theory for winning best comedy).

If either of those shows were any funnier, I’d need an oxygen tank beside me.

Last night’s episode of Ugly Betty was one of the funniest ever! Kudos to the show & all its participants. I’m really loving this show!!!

  • Big D

Modern Family and Cougar Town were both awesome!!

  • Amber

Ugly Betty was fantastic last night! Hopefully it does better since it was up against that award show. And Betty actually beat Jay Leno in the first half hour

    • Shaz10

Ugly Betty has been great all season. There are people out there who just don’t know it.

  • Vel Holman

What….No love for SVU which won the night? Y’all sleep on SVU!!! (That means I like the show)

    • Jen

seriously! not one mention of the night’s highest rated show

  • jerome

Can’t Lifetime or the CW or ABC Fam or SOMEONE pick up “Betty” if ABC drops it?

  • jiffy

i really liked the last 10 episodes or so of modern family and i hope the show will continue to get better

  • bdoll

seriously abc, move better off ted to wednesday nights. you would have a kick butt line up and you might actually give an AMAZING show the chance to survive!

    • james

wouldn’t that make sense…instead of doing an hour of the middle? Even though I think the middle is great!
