Press Tour Scoopbits: 'Nurse Jackie,' 'Tara,' Matt LeBlanc, and more!

Some highlights from Showtime’s portion of press tour…

* The network screened a trailer for Laura Linney’s upcoming cancer dramedy The Big C, premiering later this summer. Looks solid. Linney’s a shoo-in for an Emmy nod.

* We were also treated to a cheeky clip of Matt LeBlanc faux-auditioning for the role of Matt LeBlanc in the new comedy, Episodes. The takeaway: During his five years out of the spotlight, Joey morphed into a silver fox!

* The network has picked up the period drama The Borgias, a follow-up to The Tudors starring Jeremy Irons to air in Spring 2011.

* Nurse Jackie exec producer Linda Wallem said Haaz Sleiman’s Mo-Mo was written out because, as the series evolved, “O’Hara took over the best friend role.” Jackie can’t have two best friends?! Grrrr. Interesting factoid: Edie Falco has never seen a single episode of House. She also would never be friends with someone like Jackie. “I wouldn’t go anywhere near her.”

* The second season of United States of Tara will be “a little more raunchy,” confirmed the show’s leading lady (and recent Emmy winner) Toni Collette. Series creator Diablo Cody also revealed that Tara’s alters will be “a little more realistic and fluid.” Among Cody’s season 1 regrets (or “necessary evils”) was “alters in regimented clothing.” Lastly, Tara’s newest personality, Shoshanna, will debut in episode 4 and serve as a “mentor of sorts” to the family.

Nothing from Weeds? Is this Weeds final season?

    • Shane

This is the winter press tour. Weeds airs in the summer.

    • Mohammad

I hope it’s the last season for Weeds. That show has gotten worse and worse each year since season 2 and it’s time to end it.

      • milo

Agreed, the producers said years ago they couldn’t see how it could go past four or five seasons. And the last two seasons are evidence of that. Just wrap it up, this last season was just treading water.

  • Sara

I don’t get why Showtime couldn’t do more seasons of The Tudors. It’s not like Henry VIII was the only interesting one.

    • charli

no but he is the focus. and actually i’m glad they are sticking to that. it’s too easy to drag the show out and drag it down. keeping a tight focus prevents that problem.
and who is to say that they won’t do a little spinning off. do a show about Elizabeth or Mary, or the generation after them.
do it soon enough that folks still remember The Tudors but late enough that they aren’t worn out over it. more they are getting hungry for it again

      • jodipo

uh, you know there was no generation after Elizabeth right? the show is called The Tudors, and their reign ran from Henry VIII’s father to Elizabeth the 1st.

Frankly, I think the show should rightly end with Henry. His son was not ruler very long, Mary was a tyrant, and Elizabeth is quite well known through movies already. This show was started to tell the story of Henry and Anne, and has continued with Henry, but should end with his death.

      • Tego Livi

As “soap-operaed” as The Tudors was, they might as well make up more generations. Even fairly serious movies about Henry and Elizabeth have changed the story to make it more dramatic, and this is showtime, not PBS.

  • David4

But Weeds will be shown this year and yet we are already talking about The Borgias in 2011? :-p

    United STATUES of Tara!

  • Jacob

What’s United Statues of Tara? Never heard of it. But, it sounds pretty similar to United States of Tara… Same show?

    • bunker

It’s a spinoff about the black neighbors who move on up to the plantation from Gone With the Wind and collect statues.

  • michael butts

Tara to get “more raunchy”…too bad tv has to get more raunchy to stay on the air!

  • bunker

    Shoshana. Oh god.

  • @ImStillToni

WTF does Cody mean by “alters in regimented clothing?” Often times that was the one of the few ways to distinguish an Alter (in addition to speech patterns, accents, or acessories/hobbies)…so I don’t get it. She’s mad that T dresses like a 14 y/o (s)lut – but T IS a 14 year old (s)lut…am I missing something here? or that each Alter is now tied to a certain type of wardrobe based on the 1st season (yea it’s probably the latter, but my vodka & tonic is kicking in). I’m still pissed about MoMo – who DOESN’T need a gay BFF?

  • analiesejoy

Glad to hear The C Word is solid. I want it to do well so I can watch Laura Linney weekly on my television.

  • Rosy

Please keep MoMo! He was so good on the show.

Re: United States of Tara, what happens with that weird peeing creature she was becoming?

  • Edie

I think Toni Collette did a great job of personifying the altars, making the clothing unnecessary. I think it needed to be clear in the first season, and the clothes helped do that, but I was amazed at how much Toni Collette changed physically to embody each role. CAN’T WAIT for the new season :)

  • michael

OHara took over the best friend role…REALLY? There was a clear intimacy between Jackie and Mo-Mo. I see none of that between the two women, as jackie keeps her at arm’s length and uses that friendship to her benefit. What a crap excuse.

  • paulie d

what, nothing from my favorite show secret diary of a call girl?????????????

    • David4

      That’s a British show.

      • Lee

Yeah, it’s a British show, but it’s airing on Showtime.

  • mel

i definitely see the friendship between jackie and o’hara… i love o’hara so i see how that works but no need to write out mo-mo entirely.

  • graeme

Just give Laura Linney the Emmy now. She’s freakin amazing. I just hope this show doesn’t take away from her film work. She’s been on such a roll.

    • Tego Livi

Is it possible anymore to talk about TV without worrying about who’s going to get an Emmy? If you read Ausiello regularly, he hands out about 5000 Emmys every year. And that’s with half of his columns being about who got snubbed by the Emmys.

      • analiesejoy

Laura Linney would get an Emmy if all she did on TV this year was a commercial for Quizno’s*…shes THAT good.

        *would never happen
