Exclusive: 'Smallville' season 10 a done deal?

Categories: Smallville

Not quite, but CW president Dawn Ostroff tells me she is feeling very optimistic about the show’s renewal odds.

“I’m really pleased with the show,” she says. “Creatively, I think they’ve done a great job. And the ratings are [strong] on Friday night. I have to commend [the producers]… It’s not easy in season 9 to keep a show fresh. And you know what I think? The fans have really liked the show this season.

“I don’t know which way we’ll go,” she continues, “but if you would’ve asked me [earlier whether it would end this season] I would’ve said, ‘Oh, probably.’ But I can’t say that now.”

In the meantime, Ostroff says Smallville producers Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders “haven’t even pitched us the last episodes yet, so we haven’t even gotten to how we’re going to deal with the last episode and whether it’s a season finale or series finale. But right now, I think  it’s just a season finale.”

They never should have let Stephen S. Deknight go. He wrote some of the episodes that turned the show darker. He had a major hand in the new direction it took. They should have offered him the showrunner job.

If this is the series finale let clark become superman & fly. If they decide to renew for season 10 bring back lex, braniac, bizzaro, doomsday for an epic battle with clarke & JL + JSA

    • Andrea

I think Brian and Kelly have been doing an excellent job with the show this season. I wish they had been in charge for longer. They GET Superman in a way that Al and Miles never did. I would love to see a Season 10 with them at the helm again. Season 9 has been stellar.

      • Adri

I COMPLETELY agree with you. I enjoyed the first couple of seasons, but they were WAY too angsty. It seemed like a broken record at times. With Brian and Kelly, it just doesn’t feel that way. Season 9 is quickly becoming my favorite season. It seems MORE like the story of Superman.

Smallville is by far the best ever series of any Tv shows about Superman. The actors are great, and season 9 took off like a rocket and has been the best so far out of them all. They need one more year however , to get a lot of missing things in place before they end it. Mon El, Perry white, Lori Lemaris, the rest of the leagion, and Batman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern and the real Mr Mxyptlk ( I hope I spelled it correct) Plus the suit

Man that lady gets on my last nerve…. Here’s hoping to a 10th season!

  • brynna

    Season 10 or bust!

  • Adriankent

Can we send like green K to Dawn until she renews it?…. does it work that way…?

    • Marbel

      LOL. I wish!! =D

  • Staci

I have really loved season 9!! Smallville is back!!!! i hope there is a season 10!!

  • WendySue

Bring on Season 10, with lots of adventure and Clois romance..

    • Presley

      Amen to that! (:

  • J.

LET CLARK BECOME SUPERMAN ALREADY! TIGHTS AND FLIGHT PLEASE!

  • Jenn

YES to a season 10! YES YES YES. If the producers have the stories to give us that will progress this series to where it needs to be, then YES, to a 10th season. My feeling, they actually DO need it to really complete this story.

    • mgb

You are exactly right. They can’t finish the story by the end of this season. Another year is necessary to do it right, but Clark does need to fly by the end of this season, and become Superman toward the beginning of next season to give us die-hard fans the thrill of one year of out and out Superman action.

      • Adri

“Smallville” has ALWAYS intended to be about Clark Kent’s journey to becoming the Man of Steel. I’m for him flying, but maybe by mid season next year. As far as him in tights, by early next season? I don’t agree. I think it’ll end the series PERFECTLY if Clark puts on the costume that Ma Kent made for him, gives Lois a kiss, and flies out of the barn as Lois says the final words: “Superman.” Then we see Superman leave Smallville and enter Metropolis during a catastrophe. Then as the credits roll, Lois Lane’s article: “It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane. No it’s Superman!” comes in the background. *Wow! I think I just did a pretty damn good job! LOL!*

      • Karlie

I agree with mgb. I’m REALLY hoping we get at least one (and preferably a few) episodes at the end where we actually get to see Clark BE Superman. For years, people have imagined the series ending with a final shot showing Clark ripping open his shirt to reveal the classic “S”, or maybe a quickie shot of Clark in the suit and flying off as the credits roll, but after 9 (maybe 10?) seasons of watching this show that just won’t cut it for me. It might have satisfied me if the show had only lasted a couple seasons, but after investing so many years of watching the show I would feel robbed if I didn’t get to see Clark in action as Superman, Lois and the world’s reaction to him, his reaction to their reactions and so on. I’d love to get about 2 or 3 episodes at the end where we get to see it all unfold, with a final “Clark becomes Superman” story arc played out.

      • pete

I have wanted to see clark fly for the longest time, and I think that they should do it in season 10 like adri said, accept they should have at least a few episodes with him in the costume or end it and start a new superman series with the same casting. Watched too many episodes of smallville to see it end with him put on the costume, and fly off into the sunset with credits coming up shortly after. That would definitely suck.

  • Mohammad

if they do a season 10 they need to have clark fly in the season 9 finale. seriously how long can the show go without ANY progress?

  • Alex

God, everything that woman says just pisses me off.
But at least she’s aware that the fans are responding very positively to the show this season and that it’s doing well ratings wise.

  • Mariko

Dawn Ostroff is either in her own little delusional world or really knows how to spin BS. From the drop in ratings, I would say the missing 40% of last year’s audience that is NOT WATCHING this year, that all fans DO not like the unwatchable Season 9 of Loisville starring her boyfriend Clark.

    • Jenny

The viewership dropped, because it moved to Friday nights. Do you pay attention? Fridays nights are a difficult night, because most people are out on Friday nights. Smallville still has done well ratings wise, because it continues to have season highs and increasing viewership. Also it consistently does better then Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, 90210, Supernatural, and of course Melrose Place.

      • vuxes

How true: Friday night is bad and I keep missing the show.

      • Wilson

it’s pretty much always been the WB’s and the CW’s highest rated show…(well generally, sometimes ANTM takes the spot)

    • Ann

The show’s on Friday which MIGHT have something to do with a ratings drop. Although SV has been acknowledged in the media as doing suprisingly well for Fridays. I mean, I’m not going to say ANYTHING about the dreck that was the last half of season 8 which was heavy-Chloe and Failsday. Oh and everytime there is Lois focus in s9, it has been about Clark even when he’s not in the scene. Why am I even arguing this? Bitter fans who now “hate” Smallville but come to bitch about it on an online article=Priceless hilarity!!!

    • Huh

Are you a clana or a chlarker? Because really, this season is being a LOT better than the last few ones.

      • Mary

From what I’ve seen across the different fan websites…the only “fans” (and I put that in quotes because I don’t consider these people true fans because all they do is use deragtory language to bash the show, the actors, the producers, you name it) that can’t recognize that Season 9 has been the strongest season this show has had in a LONG time and a creative rebirth for the show are the shipper fans who are just pissed off and unhappy because they aren’t getting the ending that THEY want. THey basically do nothing but scream and whine and curse on every website. The bottom line is that if you visit most of the Smallville fan sites the fans ARE happy with Season 9 and a lot of fans feel this is the best season this show has ever had. That being said, I want to see a strong finish to this season keeping with the momentum of the first half and yes, a strong decisive Season 10 that wraps up this story for CLARK. He is the damn star of this show. I want to see him finally fly, embrace his identity as Superman and I’d like him to verbalize once and for all that Lois is the person he will spend his life with. If I get those things—then yes, I want a Season 10.

      • K

        EXACTLY!

      • Nefertiri

I hate SVLois/Clois, and the episodes are seriously boring bilge, but I do have to say that those who complain hardest are those who aren’t getting Chlark like they want.

SORE LOSERS is what they are.

      • Supermanfan

LOL. If you think that Smallville is boring then again, why are you posting here? It honestly cracks me up how much time people see to have on their hands. The funny thing about Clark and Lois is that they are actually much closer to their modern comic counterparts than anything we ever saw in the Donnerverse movies. They are a very good representation of the canon which is why a true Superman fan like myself really likes them. I consider myself a CLARK fan first and foremost because I’m a Superman fan. I like Clark and Lois because I can be objective enough to remove myself from all the shipper BS and realizes that she makes him the happiest and that it’s been canon for 70 years for a reason—because it works.

    • Glenda

If we don’t respond to the haters then eventually they will go away. They didn’t get their so called Chlark or their Clana. They want to rewrite 70 years of history to satisfy their little girl dreams. Just ignore them and bask in the awesomeness that is Season 9 for Smallville.

      • glenn wakeling

Have just watched season 8 of Smallville on DVD and i really liked it. Because i live in England i have not seen Season 9 yet but cant wait till i do. Looking forward to seeing the episode Kandor, and the Justice Society. And yes there should be a 10th Season it deserves it.

  • Candice

I thought season 8 was great, but season 9 has surpassed my expectations. I would love to get another season.

  • Kurt

    Smallville is still on TV?!

    • Zoey

      Sadly.

      • Elle

You know what? Do we really have to keep going through this? If you don’t watch the show or you don’t like it—why do you waste your time commenting on it? Do you know how pathetic it makes you look? Frankly, there are plenty of shows on TV that I don’t care for but my time it more valuable than wasting my time posting negative things about them. I have more self-respect than that. I guess you don’t.

  • RedRidingHood

Sounds good to me. I still can’t believe how good the show has been in it’s ninth season, but why let a good thing go? It’s not liked it’s floundering.

    • Jenny

I thought Season 9 would be good but I honestly didn’t think it would be THIS good. I thought Season 8 was a huge improvement but Season 9 has totally blown my away. Tom Welling is incredible as Clark Kent. He is so likable and charming. The supporting cast is also amazing. Tom and Erica have been blowing me away as Clark and Lois. I would love a Season 10.

  • Buddy

The CW needs it. Unless they want to sell their Friday night space away like they did Sunday. They haven’t even bothered to try adding original programming in the 9:00 hour and I doubt they want to launch a new show on Friday next fall. So either they bring back Smallville or Friday becomes all repeats.
