Press Tour Scoop: 'Caprica' the same, yet different than 'BSG'

Filed under: News and tagged:

There are no Cylons, but Battlestar Galactica fans will find plenty that’s familiar about Syfy’s forthcoming prequel, Caprica (premiering Jan. 22).

Caprica, like Battlestar Galactica, doesn’t treat the [sci-fi] genre like a toy department,” exec producer David Eick told reporters at Winter Press Tour. “We take it seriously.”

Translation: The drama, starring Eric Stoltz, Esai Morales, Polly Walker, and Paula Malcomson, will be brimming with BSG‘s trademark moral complexity. “There are no stark good guys and bad guys,” said fellow e.p. Jane Espenson. “Everyone has moral shadings and we can tell very complex stories as a result.”

On the flipside, Eick stressed that non-BSG loyalists will not be lost if they tune into Caprica. “New viewers will find that there’s virtually no tether to BSG from a storytelling standpoint,” he maintained. “Legitimately, the show stands on its own… It’s not called Battlestar Galactica: Caprica [for a reason].”

Great pilot. Great scene near the end with Adama father and son and a familiar musical theme

  • Heat

Can’t wait! I powered through all of BSG this year, and recently watched Caprica. I think it’s going to be great!

  • David4

The DVD release of the pilot was called Battlestar Galactica: Caprica.

    • Johnification

Actually the DVD says “Caprica” and somewhere else “from the producers of Battlestar Galactica”.

  • Jaymii

Really can’t wait for it. I love the world of Caprica they’ve created. Can’t wait to explore it some more.

  • Rebecca

Errr, Michael – Isn’t the show about the creation of the cylons? The prototypes were in the pilot.

  • Ryan Vox

Oddly enough, the Australian DVD release IS called “Battlestar Galactica: Caprica” lol

    • Jim Bob

      No it’s not

  • Mia

I’m not sure if they have enough story for a series but I’ll give it a chance.

I wasn’t that excited about it to begin with and after having seen the BSG finale I think I’ll pass. Besides the action and space fighting was one of the best pasts of BSG and this show won’t have it.

    • elena

really? I’m more partial to the crazy mythology & complications in human/cylon relations. That whole “New Caprica” arc with the suicide bombers and grumpy Tigh? Loved. I guess it’s just a matter of viewers, then…

I was a bigger fan of the “West Wing in Space” parts myself, so I’ll enjoy this straight science-drama, I bet.

everything Jane Espenson has touched in the BSG universe turned out to horrible – i will pass on that one

    • crispy

I was just about to say that. Jane Espenson ruined BSG. Think I’m gonna pass on Caprica.

    • The Truth

Agree, she was involved with The Plan too and it was pretty bad. It was a rehash told through the Cylon point of view using a lot of old scenes from the original shows blended with new ones. Good thing I waited until it was on tv and not buying the dvd. So now basically billons of people died because a guy missed his daughter, sound familar like billions of people died because a young jedi was afraid his lover might die. Bad prequals not only harm themselves but the good stuff that came before.

No one was a bigger fan of BSG than me, but I found this pilot joyless and morose.

    • JasonHomey

I didn’t hate the pilot but I tend to agree with the overly morose part. The actors they chose are good and the plot seems good, but for some reason, I just wasn’t getting totally in to it. They have a long way to go to be BSG. And I finally watched The Plan last night and it was nothing to brag about.

  • zozo

I’ll watch it…I really miss BSG a lot so, anything to do with that universe will be on my list of shows to watch.

  • Silent Rage

I watched the pilot before I saw a single episode of Battlestar, in fact this was the reason why I finally watched Gallactica, can’t wait till the 29th…and IMO Jane E is the best

  • The Truth

Waite a minute, BSG made Adama’s father appear to be a lawyer that fought for justice and a good person. He supposedly inspired Lee enough to defend Baltar and go into politics to do the right thing. Now he is supposed to be a mob lawyer? Great another prequel another ruined idea of a person.

    • Kvivik

Hey, what Lee remembers of his Grandpa and what Grandpa really was are bound to be two different things.
      Seriously!
I was disappointed when I watched Caprica. I loved the characters, the showing of the Tauron culture and how it differs, but I REALLY didn’t like the ‘how’ of the human personality getting into the cylon. It totally turned me off of wanting to watch the series.
I will watch a couple episodes to see if I like it. I never judge a series by it’s premiere.

      • Johnification

Kvivik is smart. Shows I wouldn’t have watched based on their pilots alone – 30 Rock, The Office, How I Met Your Mother, 24, Alias (pilot was kinda poorly paced), etc etc etc

  • EveatEden

I cannot wait for this show to air. The pilot was reallllllly good. I definitely think it stands alone and will do the BSG universe justice!

  • DC

BSG The Plan (on last night) was pretty pathetic. I will give Caprica a try, though I did see the Caprica DVD pilot and was more than a little underwhelmed. I think Espenson writes great for impact episodes (and if she has a “feel” for the character she is writing for) but I am very wary of the fact that she was the EP on the first 1/2 of season one of Caprica. I hope that she gets reeled in a bit and some of the principles have more bite than they did in the pilot. Really did enjoy Stoltz and Morales but Stoltz’ wife is beyond a weak link… The girl who plays Zoe seems to be the standout and destined as a young breakout star and there is definitely something up with the headmistress at Zoe’s school…
