'24' scoop: Will Kiefer quit?

Tags: , News

The clock may be ticking on Kiefer Sutherland’s 24 contract, but don’t count out Jack Bauer just yet. Sutherland told reporters at press tour this afternoon that he’s “absolutely open” to sticking around for a ninth season.

“I’ve always said that as long as people wanted us to make it , and people were really interested in watching it, I would be interested,” he said. “There are a lot of components involved. Right now my focus is on finishing season 8.”

Fox honcho Kevin Reilly expects formal talks on Day 9 to commence next month. “Collectively, we just made a decision to launch the season [first] and then sit down in the next four to six weeks,” he tells me. “But my sense is Kiefer will want to keep it going.”

In the meantime, 24 exec producer Howard Gordon isn’t letting the uncertainty surrounding the show’s future affect how he ends season 8. “The way I’ve looked at it is that every single season [finale] could have been a series ender,” he says. “We just want to take it across the line credibly and then let the [other part] take care of itself. As long as Jack’s not dead, anything is possible.”

I think 9 or 10 seasons of 24 would be good. Maybe a movie and a sequel movie. Then, throw in the towel. Or, even better, have a flashback series of young Jack Bauer.

My daughter bought me the dvd of all season 6. I played one episode after another. There is an amazing consistency in this production, and it never lets you down. By viewing all the episodes together its like watching a movie, and believe me, this would make a GREAT movie. Frankly, if all they did was put each season together, back to back, they’d make millions off just those movies. If I owned the rights to this, I’d do it in a heartbeat.

Um – there have been seven seasons of “24″ so far. By my count, that would make 84 two hour movies. The “real time” nature of 24 is what makes it so compelling. I think a “24″ movie would just be a way to try to make more money, and would add nothing creatively. But I’d probably watch it anyway, if Kiefer were in it.

I think they should produce a season of 24 with the plot of 24 the game, because it had a really good plot. They could call it season 2.5

    Amen!

I love Kiefer Sutherland!! Yes!! I hope realizes their stupid mistakes, like killing Michael in Prison Break and doesnt repeat that mistake by killing Jack (which they have been talking about for a while) These writers think it is cool, to kill our heroes.. NO it isnt. Jack deserves a happy ending!! DO IT FOX!!!

This is 24, the same show that killed off Jack’s wife at the end of season one. Expecting a happy ending for Jack is only going to lead to disappoint. After seeing all of the things he’s done, all of the agony he’s gone through and all the harm he’s caused while working in counter terrorism, I don’t see that happening.
I could be wrong though, but I don’t see that happening at all.

They won’t kill Jack off, because Fox will want to keep the option open for a movie.

Season 9 and 10! ar great1 Jack deserves a movie too, he could become a James Bond, Bourne kinda secret agent…. Please FOX, DO IT!!

  • Nerwen Aldarion

Kiefer is right, as long as the show is doing well, he isn’t going to abandon the thing that brought him back to stardom.

I think mabye 10 seasons, and possibly a movie. But me personally I’m not very open for the movie cause I dont like the thought of doing a whole day in roughly two hours, its jsut not 24.

  • Diane

Hell yeah! We want more Jack Bauer. Would love to see something develop with Renee; some sexual tension. 24 hrs not much time for romoance but would love to see Jack conquer Renee fo sure

I’d love to see more seasons. I just discovered the awesomeness of 24 a few years agor via netflix, and I thought all the seasons were great, but watching episodes back to back over a few weeks is much different than over several months. I hope for many more seasons. At least 10. A movie, not so much. The whole idea behind 24 would be lost in a movie other than when it’s a prequel.

  • t3hdow

I got to disagree with most of you. I can’t see 24 lasting much longer than another season without dropping back down to season 6 crumminess. Look how difficult it was for the writers to compose season 7, even with the writers strike giving them more time. If they’re struggling this much, I think it’s better to end ’24′ before it really tanks. I don’t want it to get as bad as Prison Break’s 4th season, and 24′s season 6 was awfully close.

More 24!i can play forever and will be the best show of all time!i think the gov is giving them a hard time about things but i sat screw the gov,THEY DONT KNOW JACK!oh ya,a 24 movie and some prequels for sure!!!

I hope this is the last season. Too many shows go with the argument *Lets keep going because the ratings are still good* and then, because they kept going and had nowhere else to go…drove a perfectly good show into a miserable bloody death. If you REALLY feel the need to keep 24 going…make next season be the last with Jack training his replacement or something and then do a spin off. Take the gracious way out and follow the example of a truly great show like The Shield.

  • Jason Bourne

What about a 24 film. Jack has 120 minutes to save the day. It would be similar to the Johnny Depp flick – Nick of Time (only better)

  • Kelly

I watch it as long as the keep Jack Bauer alive. I have no interest in them doing 24 without him.

  • Kevin

I would love to see them announce a fake 9th season, and then kill of Jack at the end of this 8th season and blow all of our minds.

    • Ron

I agree. When he’s ready to leave, kill Jack in the final seconds. Find the killer in a 24 theatrical release with Kiefer in flashbacks.

  • Michelle H

I am just sick and tired of seeing Jack so beaten down by these people he is helping….You would think by now they would figure out the JACK is on their side. I really think that the show should recognize that the CHARACTER needs this.
