This Just In: ABC renews 'Modern Family,' 'Cougar Town,' 'Middle'

Breaking news from the Television Critics Assoc. press tour: ABC chief Stephen McPherson confirmed that the network has renewed freshman comedy hits Modern Family, Cougar Town, and The Middle for next season.

Other highlights from the ABC exec session…

* McPherson said “most” of the original Grey’s Anatomy cast is on board for “two or three more years.”

* No decision has been made regarding the fates of struggling comedies Ugly Betty, Better Off Ted, and Scrubs.

* What about FlashForward and V? Lynette Rice has the scoop on those two shows at Hollywood Insider.

Keep Scrubs – it’s just starting to get decent!

    • The Truth

No its been on life support since switching networks. Let it go and remember the good times.

    • J3

Second keeping Scrubs! This new take on the show is just starting to find it’s footing and it’s great! Love the new characters, as well as the familiarity and history that comes with the “old” characters.

I’m on the fence about the Scrubs 2.0 The only episode I really liked was “Our White Coats”. If they have more episodes like that, I’m all for keeping it going. But I’d throw both Scrubs and Ugly Betty under the bus if it means BOT stays on the air. I LOVE that show!!!

    • Nicole

Adding a vote for keeping both Scrubs AND BoT. BoT has just always been really strong, and has only gotten better in the second season. For two and a half minutes of awesome, watch the outtakes from one of tonights eps on youtube – hilarious, filthy and nsfw.

I was against continuing Scrubs after the fab finale last year that ended things so perfectly, but rather than dragging out a show that’s past its prime, the re-boot feels like a new show and I’m really enjoying it. I love (most of) the new cast members/characters, love that Denise is a major now (she’s awesome), and I like the new dynamic of Cox/Turk as the head honchos of a group of newbies. It’s funny and fresh (they just need to stop trying to make Lucy New!JD and let her be her own character, esp. quit it with the fantasy sequences). C’mon ABC, you can renew the grotesquely bad Grey’s Anatomy and not quality comedy shows like these? Perfect block would be Scrubs, Modern Family, Cougar Town and BoT. Do it!

  • MJ

Noooo! We must save Better Off Ted. This is a fab show. It would be great with Modern Family. Come on Mike – you need to get behind this great show and get on ABC to keep it

    • Limevixen

Better Off Ted would make a great edition to ABC’s comedy Wednesday. ABC, give this hilariously funny show a chance!

    • Sarah

Love Better Off Ted, I hope ABC renews it. Not a fan of Ugly Betty but I know viewers love the show and I hope that sticks around as well.

  • Cat

Renewing all three of those is a point in favor of ABC. The only thing that would make their Wednesday lineup completely awesome would be “Better Off Ted” at 8/7c. Come on, ABC! Do the right thing!

    • Justin

      absolutely!

  • paige

if they put better off ted at 8 on wednesday, I will watch The Middle even though i’m allergic to patricia heaton… I cant say I’m into saving scrubs. I’m watching it to support the cast and such, but its not funny. if they cancel ugly betty now, i will have no choice but to cry dammit!

    • aBc

You know what? I didn’t like Patricia Heaton before. But I really enjoy the Middle and find her entertaining on it.

      • Tego Livi

That was my reaction, too. She always came off like a really unpleasant person (like everyone else on Everybody Loves Raymond), even on the one with Kelsey Grammer. But The Middle (and PH) are funny and likable.

    • Ambient Lite

Yeah, I’d second that. The Middle is pretty cute, has decent writers putting out stuff we haven’t seen before – and that’s enough for me to overlook P-Heat and her wretched b!tchy presence.

      • amanda

I also have to agree with these statements. I CANNOT stand PH, but I have to give her credit for being a good actress and really selling her charachter on The Middle. The rest of the cast, and the writing is also superb.

    • Kim

I’m not liking The Middle as much as Modern Family or Cougar Town, but I have to admit I’d give it more of a chance if Better Off Ted was in there too. There’d be more reason to keep the TV on that extra 1/2 hour.

      • JP

The Middle and Modern Family have really surprised me this season. They’re both refreshingly endearing shows.

  • Hary

Better off Ted is done. The ratings keep dropping every time it’s on.

    • Cass

The glass isn’t 3/4 empty, its 1/4 full! Theres still hope!

  • Leek

I would actually be kind of pleased if Scrubs is renewed…I love Cole way more than I should. Franco the Younger cracks me the eff up.

    • Karen

So agree! Love Cole way more than a normal person should. THE ONLY MEMBER I DON’T LIKE IS LUCY!! She’s not Zach Braff. Stop trying to make her – him.

    • crispy

Cole is funny. But I am major crushing on the other guy, Drew.

      • paige

i will always have a Turk crush… always

      • crispy

Moooooooole! He should have it cut off and make guacamoooooole.

      • Paige E.

I’ve also taken a liking to Drew aswell. And Cole has grown on me quite abit. I say the show atleast deserves to get it’s full season. It’s really getting better.

      • paige

i think denise is pretty hot too

  • Kyle

Thats good, I really like The Middle and Modern Family, not so sure about Coguar Town!!!

    • nancy

      My thoughts exactly.

    • kim

cougar town is my favorite new show- very broad and sharp writing

  • Steve G.

    Keep Ted!
It’s far funnier than any one of those other shows.

  • Anthony

Good move on ABC to renew the three shows. Definately ABC’s best of the year. Now lets see if they give any more ideas to shows like Forgotten, or will it end up like Eastwick. Just another footnote as a show that lasts half to a full season and goes away.

  • kellen

how the hell is ‘better off ted’ still on when it has just as poor of ratings as pushing daisies, yet daisies is the one that gets cancelled?

    • paige

pushing daisies was wayyy more expensive to produce. Better off Ted seems to last as long as Pushing Daisies…

  • Nadine

Better Off Ted is hilarious! ABC must give the show its chance, it hasn’t been scheduled very consistently so far.

  • Francisco

Keep Scrubs (finally improving over the first 2 horrible episodes) and Better Off Ted (a superior show to it’s competitors)

  • Apple

KEEP BETTER OFF TED!!!!!!!!!! I would (almost) guarantee that if ABC put it with the other Wed night comedies, it would do very, very well. SAVE TED!!!!!!!!!

  • Remy

    SAVE BETTER OFF TED!!!

  • AC

Some shows just need to end. They can’t go on forever and when they do? They’re not interesting anymore.

    • jason.

But enough about Desperate Housewives…you can add me to the “Save ‘Better off Ted’” list. That show is so funny I practically have to lay plastic down on the couch before I watch it.
