ABC to develop comedy with Matthew Perry

Filed under: Television and tagged: ,

ABC announced today that it will develop a sitcom pilot called Mr. Sunshine that will star Matthew Perry. Written by Perry, Alex Barnow, and Marc Firek through Sony, the comedy focuses on a man (Perry) who realizes that, at 40, he can no longer fall back on his charm and sense of humor. His character also manages a local sports stadium in San Diego. Tommy Schlamme (The West Wing) will direct the pilot, which will be executive produced by Perry and Jamie Tarses, the former ABC entertainment president who now operates her own production shingle, Fan Fare. Perry told EW.com about the project in October. “We’re trying to do a show that’s really, really funny and can slow down and play some heartfelt moments” Perry said. “All of this stuff originally came from watching a lot of Alan Partridge and the British Office, and just wanting to go be funny again.”

Cheer up. People who are cynical without getting paid for it are just depressing.

Don’t pick this up! Save the slot for Better Off Ted!

Hey we have this awesome quirky show with great writing and a great cast. However we don’t promote it at all so it has lousy ratings and has trouble getting a following. Remember how awesome the Matt Le Blanc show “Joey” was, lets give Matthew Perry a show and cancel “Better off Ted”. Damn you ABC you took my Pushing Daisies, Life on Mars, and The UnUsuals and replace them with crap.

I’m re-watching season 2 of Pushing Daisies, and it makes me oh-so-sad to realize how we were robbed of a brilliant third season.

As for this possible show, I love Matthew Perry, but the premise sounds lackluster. Hopefully, though, he can find post-Friends success like Courtney Cox.

They can pick this up and still keep BOT if they give Mr. Sunshine Hank’s old spot.

Good stuff! Hoping it’s a good quality show that’ll entertain the masses!

Please don’t get canceled! I miss Matthew Perry!

Matthew Perry’s goal is to do “a show that’s really, really funny and can slow down and play some heartfelt moments.” That sounds like Modern Family in a nutshell. That’s setting lofty expectations. Easier said than done, but best of luck. I’d love to see another Friend score a hit sitcom.

I wish Mathew Perry the best. He was the true star of friends. I put a post on imdb.com on which friend people would date. Chandler by far got the most votes.

    pass.

Is this the same show that Showtime turned down?

    This sounds awful.

this sounds to similar to cougar town. in that it is more based on the reality of the actor’s situation. (just like “the comeback” with lisa kudrow)

is abc going to develop a tv show about a middle aged woman who loses her husband to a younger, more attractive, more popular actress? it is called “rebound” starring jennifer aniston.

  • Mia

I missed him. Hope his show does well.

Matthew Perry is capable of a smart show. Studio 60 & his work on WEST WING was excellent, but you needed a brain to like it. The same w/BETTER OFF TED -smart writing, excellent cast. Dummies watch most of TV & own it as far as the suits go for ad $. Be thankful we get anything good ever. And hope Perry gets a shot.
