'House' exclusive: Oscar nominee David Strathairn checks in

Tags: , News

The episode hasn’t even been shot and already Hugh Laurie’s upcoming House directorial debut is attracting some serious Oscar buzz.

Actor David Strathairn, who scored an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Edward R. Morrow in Good Night, and Good Luck, has been tapped to guest star in the Laurie-helmed 17th episode.

“He’s a patient who has scenes with Dr. House,” explains executive producer Katie Jacobs. “I’m excited to [watch] the two of them in a room together.”

Jacobs says Laurie, who was absent from Fox’s press tour party tonight because he was busy prepping for his big episode, handpicked Strathairn for the sure-to-be-meaty part. “Hugh really wanted him to play the role,” she says, “and [David] responded.”

As Jacobs previously teased, episode 17 will be a tense, change-of-pace hour. “I can’t give away the premise,” she says, “but the format is different.”

    Great combination!

    • James

      Agreed! Major WIN!

    • Melissa

WOW another change of pace episode in the same season. This season is made of WIN. I love Strathairn in everything he’s been in, from baddie to nerdy his performance is always compelling. This episode promises to be powerful. I pray Hugh doesn’t freak out with his tendency for self-doubt. Also he needs to eat more, he is wayyyy to thin these days, he looked great in Broken, but now he is back to being uber thin.

Can’t wait for Hugh’s episode! Hugh Laurie is made of win!

  • sam

David Strathairn kinda looks like David Shore

  • Bob Frapples

    Thank you, God.

    • God

You’re welcome. Figured I owed you one after all that Foreteen nonsense I’ve forced you to endure.

      • allez

ROTFLMAO! And Thanks, Ghod, for no more Luddy!

  • Lisa

This should be good – David is a great actor and should work well with Hugh.

    I ADORE HUGH LAURIE!!

“He’s a patient who has scenes with Dr. House.” Thanks for the crack journalism, EW, and to Katie Jacobs for that revealing insight. Should be a shocking turn of events–an episode in which House interacts with a patient. Kind of like that episode of Law & Order, in which the detectives interact with a suspect.

    • Sarah

Marcus, since TPTB at House committed the absolute stupidity of not having Hugh and James Earl Jones act in any scenes together, I’m pretty happy to hear that two of my all-time favorite actors are actually going to swap some lines.

      • Marcus

        Whatever!

  • JJ

    Jack Nicholson warned you.

  • Belle

I LOVE David! I am so excited they will both be together on the show!

  • Mariel

Holy Cow! That guy is the sh!t!! Love him!! Awesome combination :) Won’t miss it!

  • ShockPoP08

This is great!! Perfect match! Should be an interesting episode! can’t wait!

  • UncleWalty

when are we going to see Stephen Fry on House? Or Rowan Atkinson?

    • Snsetblaze

      Great idea!

    • MandyB

Exactly! I’m still waiting for a “cross over” episode between House and Bones, where Stephen Fry is an recurring character.

    • Mariel

Don’t count on Stephen Fry. Greg Yaitanes said they don’t hire actors that have appeared recently in other shows. Go figure why such a rigid and lame decision…

    • niki

Yes! Rowan Atkinson please! That would be hilarious!

    • Lala

Um, Rowan Atkinson would be amazing. They haven’t acted together in what, 15, 20 years? And they have to get Stephen Fry on before the series ends. Maybe if he’s not on Bones next season he could do it…?

  • Lionors

    Moss!

    • FABULOUS ALERT

      Loved him as Moss.

  • Amy

“The episode hasn’t even been shot and already Hugh Laurie’s upcoming House directorial debut is attracting some serious Oscar buzz.”

    Emmy buzz, perhaps?

    • Catherine

Poor choice of words agreed. Should have read directorial debut is attracting some Oscar worthy actors.

  • Jade

David is awesome! Can’t wait to see this!
