In what easily ranks as this week’s most exciting piece of casting news, Cougar Town has tapped Beverly D’Angelo to guest star as the white trash mom of Busy Phillips’ Laurie, sources confirm to me exclusively.
The National Lampoon vet shoots her episode next week, which means it’ll probably air in February. Not soon enough as far as I’m concerned!
In case you missed the bulletin, ABC just renewed Cougar Town for a second season.

It really has been. Great new comedies came along and the shows that were already funny got even funnier.

Don’t forget The Office and The New Adventures Of Old Christine. On Wednesday, I was actually overwhelmed with the amount I was laughing at Old Christine, Modern Family, and Cougar Town.
And Barry Bostwick as her dad. If Cougar Town hadn’t be renewed already, casting those two would have put it over the top.

Well said, Doug. Just add Parks & Recreation to the list. It has really been good this year. Also The Sarah Silverman Program returns next month. TV comedy is good shape.
Excellent choice, of course. Love Beverly D’Angelo. She would be my second choice, but a close second, to Michelle Phillips.
Why Michelle Phillips?
Because, growing up, I enjoyed Knots Landing and she was great as Paige’s (Nicolette Sheridan) mother. I don’t think we saw enough of her after that. She could play funny and snarky at the same time with spot on comedic timing. But so can Beverly D so it’s all good.
