Scoop: 'The Office' plotting a David Brent-Michael Scott showdown?

Tags: , News

Funny story: I heard an unconfirmed rumor earlier today that Ricky Gervais was seriously considering reprising his role as original Office manager David Brent on the U.S. version later this season. Too good to be true, right? That’s what I thought. Well, about an hour ago, Ricky Gervais took the stage at press tour (he’s here promoting his new self-titled animated HBO comedy) and hinted that he might do something with the U.S. Office next season. Bottom line? I think there’s a very strong chance that Michael Scott is going to come face-to-face with his British doppelganger, the only question now is when.

Can you imagine?!

    This better happen!

    • dave

If he does appear I’m sure it won’t be as David Brent but another character.

      • Ian

Hey Jimy, I’m sure most doctors know how to spell REGISTRATION.

      • dave

“I just hope you don’t mind me being a doctor” – LOL, yeah women hate that.

These messages on every board are so annoying.

      • Ryan

Dave, that is seriously ridiculous. What would be the point of him coming on and not playing Brent?

      • topazbean

Exactly, Jimy is MADE for that role!

    • josh

He better bring Gareth with him. Would love to see a Gareth v. Dwight storyline

      • shonna

that would be genius! it would have to be an hour long episode.

      • Lon

I would be so much more into a Gareth v. Dwight story than a David v. Michael story. I mean, dumb and dumber has been done before. But crazy and crazier?

Although now that I think on it, watching David and Michael compete to have people they ‘they’ are the coolest cat in the room could get fairly hilarious…

      • BobDob

I think I just jizzed in my pants.

That said, while Gareth vs Dwight would be priceless, there doesn’t have to be a David vs Michael angle too. I think it might be funny if they get along so well that it turns into an uncomfortable bromance.

I’d also like to see a few of the other characters come over, most notably the hot female temp — she could continually shut down Ryan’s advances — the British version of Jim and the uber-competent version of Jan.

(The British version of Pam can stay home, despite the fact that she is the one original actress who has now been on several American TV shows. I couldn’t stand her in the original Office.)

    • wd

Hmmm, maybe he’ll wait until the final (next) season of the Office to give it more significance. Regardless of when, it will be comic/cosmic gold :) yippee

  • Lillie

That would be amazing! I really miss the UK Office. Bring over Tim and Garreth, too!

    • Carl

David meeting Michael, Gareth meeting Dwight and Kevin meeting Keith would be incredibly awesome.

  • Nick

I’m not sure how I feel about this. Gervais rocks and the episode in question would be awesome but will detract from the perfection of the british original?

    • LR

      i agree!

      • Garry

Dave, you’re wrong. The 2nd UK series of “The Office” was every bit as brilliant as the first.

The American version can’t hold a candle to it.

    • Dave

Sorry to say, but the UK Office had a great first series and then immediately went into decline with an OK second series, followed by the schmaltzy “special”. Perfection, it ain’t.

      • Joel

you clearly have no sense of humor or depth of emotion. Go back to your friends reruns and your Will Ferrel comedies.

      • Dave

Sorry Joel, but I have no sense of fanboyism that you surely must have. Series 1 was better than Series 2 which was better than the special. Don’t need to know the “new math” to see that as a decline.

  • John

Ricky Gervais will run circles around Steve Carell. All it’ll be is a reminder of how the US version isn’t as good…

    • april-ann

@ John — I totally agree. Yes, I CAN imagine, Ausie(“?!”), and if I were Steve Carell, I’d be doing everything I could to keep Ricky Gervais AWAY. As good as Steve is considered to be in the US version, he can’t act his way out of a paper bag compared to Ricky Gervais.

      • Lynette

I love them both, April-Ann. And I think they bring different things to very similar characters. So, because I’m a selfish biatch, I say bring it on. I will then watch the episode over and and over because I love them both. No need to hate.

      • Right

Because Gervais is a prima donna who’s all about himself and not working with the rest of the cast to make the best show possible. Right.

      • april-ann

I hope we can all give our honest opinions here without being accused of “hate”.

    • Alan of Montreal

the US version is funny in its own way. Since Gervais is an Exec Producer on the US version, I’m sure he’ll find a way to make it work.

    • Dave

I know it’s cool to say the British version is better and there is no beating the original, but Steve Carell is a genius and he is probably the only guy on the planet who could create Michael Scott in the shadow of David Brent and make it works so well.

      • Paul

He’s not a genius, he’s a moderately talented comedic actor.

      • MattyB

I agree with Dave. Carell is a master of subtle comedy. He’s created a wholly unique persona from the inspiration of an already iconic character.

      • Aitch

Everyone says they like the British office best just to be cool! lol

    • Steve

      idiot

  • LauraBC

Wow, I’m really surprised to hear Ricky say this because he and Steve have always said they wouldn’t revisit anything Office related, or Extras for that matter.

  • Anon

If it does happen, I’d guess it’ll be for Season 7 which could be the final season. I can’t see any way that the US Version could live past an episode like that and the only way for it to really work would be if Ricky Gervais and Stephan Merchant wrote and even directed the episode themselves. Only then would we see true perfection of such a story.

  • Tommy

Hope it doesnt happen the UK version is perfection. While I do enjoy the US version its not even in the same league as the original. I really dont want to tarnish whats already been perfected!

  • evelyn27

My mind just exploded. 0_o That would be the stuff of legends.

  • Andrew

If all he said is he might do something with the show, then it could just mean that he’d write or direct an episode.

  • JACKJACK

ahhhhhhhhhhh TOO GOOD TO BE TRUEEEEE AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • ah

    jump the shark

    • soulstryka

      no you jump the shark

    • rick

It jumped years ago but who cares, everything else has as well, and it’s still enjoyable. So whatever.

      • Dave

“jump the shark” itself jumped the shark years ago. Only tools continue to use it to attack shows these days….

  • ggny

this what happens when the ship starts to sink

  • Sue

Ricky Gervais is awesome. I’ll take anything.

  • maiv

    That would blow my mind

  • ryan

Maybe I am just part of a bad younger generation, but The Britsh Office is too british. That means its not as funny as our version. I don’k care if it was first or not.But Gervais is funny so we will see just how good it is.

    • strawberry lumps

this. i’ve seen the british office, and aside from the fact that it was about 1 am, it almost put me to sleep. don’t get me wrong, i loves me some monty python, fawlty towers, and blackadder, but i’ll keep my office in scranton.
i would love to see him on the office just for kicks as much as the next guy, but i think i heard something about this somewhere else and they said that he would either write or direct an episode sometime in the near future… maybe that’s what he meant?

    • Leila

Ryan, you’re absolutely right. The British Office was way too British. I mean, what were they thinking? They definitely should have been more American. I mean, i didn’t get the British humor, so clearly it sucked because obviously, all entertainment is judged based on whether we Americans like it or not.

      • Wynona

I don’t like British television at all so I’ve never watched the British version, but I have heard even from Brits who have watched both versions that the British one cannot match how funny the US one is

      • Lisa

Lovely that the above reply shows that the responder totally gets the point Leila was making. De-evolution, anyone?
