'Grey's Anatomy' creator Shonda Rhimes crafting new medical drama for ABC

The mastermind behind Grey’s Anatomy is looking to expand her universe. ABC announced today that it has ordered a drama pilot from Grey’s creator/executive producer Shonda Rhimes and her longtime producing partner, Betsy Beers, that focuses on three stateside doctors who opt to work for an isolated tropical clinic. Dubbed Off The Map, the drama script is from fellow Grey’s scribe Jenna Bans and was one of several pilots that ABC ordered today. Others include a new drama called Body of Evidence from Chris Murphey (2004′s Dead Lawyers) that’s about a female medical examiner who used to work as a neurosurgeon, and a single-camera comedy pilot from ex-ABC topper Jamie Tarses and newcomer David Caspe that focuses on a couple that breaks up at the altar.

O.M.G. you might as well call it Grey’s 3.0

seriously!!!!! enough with all the medical dramas from shonda and betsy. people make fun of how FOX’s sunday night line-up is “MacFarlane’s night” well pretty soon (as i would assume that Off The Map will air on thursdays before grey’s) will dub thursdays as Shonda-night.

If both her shows weren’t doing so well, ratings-wise anyway, the network wouldn’t want it. I don’t blame them for wanting to capitalize on it. Blame the people that keep watching it.

Agreed, another medical drama? How about another lawyer or police procedural? Is original thinking in tv dead? … Of course people do get sucked into those shows. I guess it could be worse, we don’t need any more reality shows…

  • Anna

    yawn

    greysanatomy&private practice on an island.

  • Mandy

I think we’ve seen pretty much every trick Shonda has in her deck, and way more than once. I already tuned out of her existing shows due to boredom, so I see no reason to try this. As for the other two shows — the “Body of Evidence” one might be interesting, but the last one sounds more like a good idea for a movie than a TV show. How is it supposed to be about a broken-up couple in, like, year three?

    Mario, who cares?

Shonda is an extraordinary story-teller and if the new show works, why not?

This new show might bring aboard new fans to the Shonda-verse, for those viewers who may have never gotten on the Greys-bandwagon.

If it turns out great, then the more the merrier. Don’t be so quick to judge.

    • Extraordinary Story teller?

We are talking about the woman who featured a character screwing a ghost and had a high school prom in a hospital right?

      • Lili

LMAO.. I completely agree Extraordinary Story teller! The first 2 seasons of Grey’s rocked. Up until this last episode, everything else had sucked!

      • mario

thanks for the support. and yeah i love grey’s. was great up until mid-season3 then it fell and the whole ghost-thing was too much to bear without a good enough answer (which came little too late). so far season 6 is doing much better. now private practice is struggling with compelling stories up until this season but, still feel a bit everywhere.

  • janem

    Enough of shonda rimes’ garbage!!

  • joseph

i, personally, think the new Shonda Rhimes show sounds interesting. I loved Going to Extremes, the tropical medical show from eons ago. Throw in some doctors without borders concept and it could be pretty interesting. I think she’s finally found a good tone for Private Practice, but that was making it about the characters, not about their jobs.

  • Carol

Shonda/ABC – here’s an idea: how about focusing on Grey’s to make it great once again instead of the shlock that airs every Thursday at 9pm?

    • Mothra

AMEN, SISTAH! Grey’s is seriously anemic and it never shows more than when they fly up Kate Walsh and team her up with “McSteamy”. Shonda seems to be spreading herself too thin; she should ride the horse that got her there. Now, more coffee and fewer tortured metaphors!

  • GOB

please make it stop. the world does NOT need another medical drama.

  • Dave

Seriously, enough of Shonda Rhimes! Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice both suck! Why do we need another medical soap opera from her? How many medical dramas do we need on TV at once? At least wait until Grey’s ends, and then make a new medical drama.

  • Emma

How about just focusing on the ones you already have and make them better as they used to be a long, long time ago.

  • Spike

Whatever happened to the news/war correspondents show Shonda was doing? THAT sounded interesting.

    • RtG

I was thinking the same thing. Still waiting for this show. And wasn’t it going to star Jeffrey Dean Morgan (aka Denny)?

  • Spike

PS – Shonda totally needs to ask whoever’s doing “The Deep End” for a cut. It’s a CARBON copy of Grey’s.

  • mdb

what they want to see if shonda and co can spread their crappy writing over 3 series? two bad shows are not enough?

  • Lucy

So. I know that the comments left so far seems that most people aren’t fans of the show. But, just putting my two cents in. If the creator of Grey’s is making a new show I wonder if this means Grey’s has run its course and will be coming to an end…..

    • RtG

God, I hope so. Grey’s is so done. The only good storyline is the Cristina-Owen-Teddy love triangle. Bailey remains hugely underused. And the cast is bloated.

  • Yogi

Shonda, do something else. You already have the medical thing on lock. Give us some originality please!!
