Granted, I’m using the word recast loosely here, but Grey’s Anatomy has tapped Angel‘s J. August Richards and Cupid‘s Sarah Paulson to play younger, circa ’82 versions of Richard and Ellis in the Feb. 18 episode.
The flashback-heavy hour, appropriately titled “Time Warp,” will shed light on the beginnings of the affair between the Chief and Mer’s mom.
In separate sequences, we’ll see Bailey in her pre-”Nazi” days, and Callie shortly before she was introduced on the show.
But back to Richards and Paulson, their resemblance to James Pickens Jr. and Kate Burton is pretty uncanny, no? Paulson and Burton, in particular, look like they were cut from the same family tree.

FIRST?
And STUPID!
Seriously, why does anyone think typing “FIRST!” makes them sound like anything but an idiot?
Agree – it’s very PerezHilton.com circa ’06.
ITS FROM AINTITCOOL.COM YOU TOOLS
I wish EW could figure out a way to get rid of all the idiots that feel the need to advertise their dating and shopping websites in the the middle of a message board.
@kenbud – Take your “First” nonsense over to aicn.com, where it belongs.
Sweet! …. Love J. August Richards … would love to see him in something great again on TV!
Agreed, and love Sarah Paulson as well, great casting there Grey’s!
Yeah, I love them both! Only J. August Richards seems a lot younger to me than Sarah Paulson.
Yes love him. I still go watch my Angel box set to get my fix of him
here here!!!
J August is a doll. He was a client of my shop for years. Always a gentleman. Great to see him up to something.
That’s an episode to watch
WOW….um, wow. you nearly scared em half to death until i opened the article. hopefully this epi will be interesting.
Sarah Paulson was the best thing about Studio 60 (which is an accomplishment, as it was a great show.)
I LOVE SARAH PAULSON!! yay. but i stopped watching greys a while ago. might just have to tune in for this one.
Yes! I love me somw J. August Richards. Thought he was amazing in Angel. You can tell Shonda has a massive respect for Whedon. After all these Whedon alum on her show’s.
Yes! I love me some J. August Richards. Thought he was amazing in Angel. You can tell Shonda has a massive respect for Whedon. After all these Whedon alum on her show’s.
I don’t watch “Grey’s Anatomy” but know that Seth Green was on it once upon a time. What other Whedon-alums have shown up?
I did just realize that Paulson herself is also a Whedon-alum… but the question stands. I’m curious.
Tara from buffy played by amber benson has been, anya played by emma caulfield has been, principal wood (canlt remember who played him), Wesley played by alexis deinsof, and fred played by amy acker. Most of these were on her show private practice.
The guy that played Wesley on Angel and Buffy was on PP as a husband that had two wives that were pregnant at the same time.
She has also tweeted she is a “creepy crazed buffy/angel fan” and has stated her favorite episodes of buffy are “hush” and “the body”.
She was in the movie Serenity.
So does this mean the Chief got his position through some devil’s bargain that ultimately resulted in tragic consequences for a loved one? Probably.
lawls. no but seriously. I can’t imagine seeing him in any role but Gunn!
LOL He will always be Gunn 2 me! Man I miss angel! But I’m happy 2 see him back on TV again!
love sarah paulson! shes much prettier than ellis though
25 years can be hard on a gal.
Wow, when I got the tweet I thought you were talking about Katherine Heigl. I’m so relieved.
Excellent news! High quality actors for what promises to be a pretty explosive episode. And great to have confirmation that we’ll be revisiting basement-dweller Callie and pre-Nazi Bailey.
wow great casting…the casting director on grey’s really need a pay raise they just keep making great casting decisions
great casting? really? the guy looks nothing like the chief.
I have to agree – no resemblance to the Chief at all.
But he’s a terrific actor, hence the “great casting”. He’ll look enough like James Pinkens in costume and make-up; it’s the performance that matters.
Gunn!!! I hope to continue to see J. August Richards, he’s great. This post makes me want to have an Angel marathon…
Aww Gunn’s coming to Grey’s, that’s really awesome!! Can’t wait to see how this episode turns out. I wonder if maybe in this episode, we’ll be getting hints about whether Jackson Avery is actually their son…
