Conan already has a production company CONACO which is why his manager says he and NBC could have future dealing’s if not on his own then through his production company for himself or for other entertainers..

While not a huge Leno fan (more of a Letterman guy) I have for the past couple of years always taped his show on Monday because of “Headlines” (a funny bit “stolen” from Letterman). In a rare instance of cutting my nose to spite my face (because, as a rule, I’m old enough to know better) I will now NEVER watch Leno again for more than a second it takes to change the channel (assuming I end up on that channel). Yeah, NBC executives screwed this whole thing up royally, but if Leno had had even 1/10 of Conan’s class (who to my knowledge never even mentioned Leno’s name in this whole thing or even hinted about him) he would have done the right thing and just moved on. Leno’s not alone in show business in having no class, and he doesn’t really even have that much talent (a bit — he’s not bad with his timing of jokes but no better than a hundred others) but I’m amazed he’s so popular with the aging viewership of NBC (which is going to surpass CBS as being “the old people’s network” — and this comment comes from a senior citizen!).

I’ll watch Conan no matter where he ends up (and that’s the other side of this whole affair — I think Conan made far more fans for life than Leno will ever bring back to the Tonight show. I can hardly wait until the fall to see how the ratings treat this, because most of Leno’s fans will be dead by then).

What the final monologue showed me was Obrien’s determination to end the whole thing with a touch of class. He could have taken a swipe at Leno or NBC, as was his right, but her held off and talked to his fans instead.

As for Leno, and while this may enrage his many fans, he now comes across as the spoiled child who, when things did not go his way, threatened to take his ball and go home. Though he is now, what many refer to as, “returning to his rightful place” I think he may, at least in the short term, lose some fans for how both he and the NBC execs allowed this whole disaster to play out.

Last summer, I had a friend’s son stay with us for vacation. Being in “the industry” I arranged lunches for us on the studio lots. We were walking on the Universal lot when we ran into Conan, walking toward the Tonight Show offices to get prepped for his show. We said hello and expected him to just nod and walk on but, instead, he stopped and talked to my young friend, Connor. I was blown away by his graciousness and generosity and Connor will NEVER forget that experience. In an industry filled with skepticism, negativity, fear and, of course, cynicism, Conan’s simple gesture was proof enough for me that he is as classy as he proved Friday night. This is NOT and will NOT BE about Jay Leno, at the end of the day. The postscript to this story will always be about Conan and the incredible way he lives his life and conducts himself in business. I will always be a fan of his comedic talent, but more importantly, I will forever be a fan of him as a professional and a man of integrity.

I love Conan. He’s such a class act.

I always liked Conan and was disappointed with Jays decision to take his old job back after he gave it away. He’s an indian giver and I have never found his stuff funny….ever. Oh well, Jimmy Fallon is the next casualty because Jays not gonna get ratings at 11:30 either since he’s a douche-so Jimmy won’t get any good let in ratings.

  • Butters

    Conan, i luv ya!

  • Amused

God, I’m glad this is over! Craig Ferguson called it like it was… “It’s a couple of middle-aged white guys arguing over X million dollars…I’m bored off my arse.”

Honestly, I think the fans are making more of this than the two involved are. There will always be “wars” with celebrities pitted against each other thanks to the fans. You can’t like both. You have to like one or the other. Leno isn’t doing this to Conan and Conan isn’t doing this to Leno. It is what it is. NBC would be stupid to let Leno leave. They’d be stupid to let him go to another network. Leno, The Biggest Loser, and The Office are the only things I watch on NBC adding Conan to that and that’s really all the people I know watch on NBC. Conan’s got his outraged “I hate Jay” fans, but for the most part losing Leno would have been a much worse decision for NBC. Leno will get higher ratings at 11:35 than Conan no matter how much trash the Conan and Letterman fans talk. Leno’s funnier than Letterman (and a tad bit cleaner). Headlines is way better than Top Ten. Jaywalking is way better than Stupid Human Tricks. Kevin Eubanks is better than Paul Schafer.

I know NBC made a major gaffe in not letting Conan prove himself. He could have done it. I think it would have taken some changes on Conan’s part. He can’t be his Late Night self on The Tonight Show. 12:35 is not 11:35. He’d have had to learn as he goes on. NBC was not willing to take that chance when they had the possibility of losing Leno. If you put yourself in the execs shoes, losing Leno is not an option. NBC is already failing, why make it fall faster?

Conan fans, I really appreciate what you’re trying to do, but trash talking Leno isn’t going to bring Conan back. Leno failing at 11:35 isn’t going to bring Conan back. Conan’s not coming back to NBC.

The majority of the people out there aren’t posting on the internet. They’re not trash talking Jay. They’re not trash talking Conan. It does’t matter who they support. Some will watch The Tonight Show because it’s what they’ve always done no matter who the host is. Leno fans will return to The Tonight Show because they find him funny (I’ll return because I like his monoloques, Headlines, Jaywalking, Kevin, and Ross). Conan fans will watch whatever Conan goes on to do. Some may also be Leno fans and will watch Leno until Conan comes back and then may watch Conan only or switch between the two. I doubt Letterman gets higher ratings because of this.

I like both Conan and Leno, but I do like Leno’s interviews better.

Why didn’t Leno just give it up!! If he had half the graciousness that Conan has he would have known it was time to let go,particulary since stand-up is more his forte. Conan did get a sweet deal for himself and he staff as they well deserved. Kudos to Conan the gentleman and funnyman. Where ever he goes, I’ll be watching!!!

    • Leah

Leno still gets the late night ratings. He should have never left The Tonight Show. Some people, like you, don’t think he’s funny. That’s fine. There’s not one person out there who everyone likes. Some people are going to like Leno and some people aren’t. Some people are going to like Conan and some people aren’t.

This doesn’t make Leno a bad person. He’s doing what NBC’s letting him do. They didn’t want to lose him in the first place so they gave him his 10:00 show. I think they realized they’d given him a raw deal by “forcing” him out of The Tonight Show so they wouldn’t lose Conan. Now that they realize a late night show does not fit primetime, they want to keep Leno and move him back to the time that was sweet for him.

Losing Leno would be a much harder blow than losing Conan. I think Conan’s funny, sure. But, I wouldn’t tune into to watch him the way I would tune into watch Leno.

Conan had a good final show, I hear. But, does this make Leno a rat and Conan a really classy guy? NO! Why? Conan said he’d walk if he wasn’t given The Tonight Show so he’s forcing Leno out the way people are saying Leno is forcing him out. It’s OK for Conan to do it, but it’s not OK for Leno to “do” it? HYPOCRITES!

    I cried. I can’t believe it, but I did.

  • really?

This is business people… conan’s ratings were tanking. He was never able to capture the audience that Leno had whether you like it or not. I’m a Letterman fan personally but if you are hired for a job and do not do it well, then you will get fired or told to do a different job. This is just a business folks.

  • bRUCE

YES IT WAS A CLASSY ENDING FOR CONAN. HIS HUMOR WAS MORE LIKE LETTERMAN’S. THE TRUTH IS THAT FOR SOME OF US THAT HUMOR IS NOT FUNNY. I AM NOT TAKING A SHOT. PEOPLE JUST HAVE DIFFERENT TASTES AND VIEWPOINTS IN LIFE.

  • Sarah

Classy all the way. Can’t wait to watch Conan on tv again
