I quit watching soaps in the 90s, simply because I didn’t have time for them anymore after I returned to work when my son started school. Honestly, I didn’t miss them, either. Even though GL and ATWT were probably at the top of their game, story and writing-wise in that era, their stories were trite, repetitive and increasingly ridiculous. Come to think of it, so were most of the characters. I guess I simply outgrew the genre.

But the very bad writing is what i can’t forgive. A few years ago, I had to endure AMC when some of its fans commandeered the TV in the company break room. One of my least cherished memories of that time is when Jackson and Erica were suffering a particularly vile long lost daughter who seemed intent on breaking them up. Then the twit barged in on their wedding. Fine, she tried to disrupt things, but you know what normal people do in that situation? They throw the witch out, and go about their business. But did that happen? Of course not. This smug little bag of pus kept going on and on and on, and everyone just stood there and let her. Come on! That’s just stupid. This show used to have top-notch writers who turned out compelling, believable scenes within a compelling, believable storyline every single day, year after year. Not anymore, obviously.

I blame Gloria Monty for vomiting the Luke and Laura bile onto the world. Soaps got away from focusing on the interactions between characters, and became badly told James Bond ripoffs. Did it ever occur to soap writers that if someone were interested in seeing Dr. No Meets Gidget, it would have been done. Sheesh.

Depending on what was the purpose of putting soaps in the first place.

were they supposed to be written as Family dramas or as over-the-top guilty pleasures? But because many of the soaps like General Hospital thrived for years, it’s hard to maintain its first premise when succeeding headwriters are not that consistent with their storytelling.

I couldn’t figure out why there is often the need to age some characters or rewrite some of the stories of a show’s history.

        forgot to add…

another factor with the decline of soaps was that the writers made it impossible for these shows to maintain its realism which what made them endeared to viewers for years, because people can easily relate. I could tolerate some over-the-top storylines as long as they won’t ruin the personalities of beloved characters.

At least One Life to Live seems to be the better written show. Days seemed to have rebounded back as well. GH needs to ditch the mob stories, and B&B should stop Ridge from falling back and forth between Taylor and Brooke.

I’m a die-hard soap fan and not ashamed to admit it. Agnes Nixon is dead on in her comments, and I agree with everything she says. She misses one factor that really bugs me, though. Soaps need to be more multi-generational. The best ones have always had relationships between kids, teens, parents and grandparents. When producers start weaning out the “older” cast and focusing more on “younger” actors, the shows lose a lot of dramatic potential. Y&R made a huge mistake in letting John Abbott die a few years back, and then bringing the actor back as a ghost (and in a really poorly conceived story line, as “Monty”). Thank goodness they keep giving Katherine Chancellor great story lines, a new love with her husband, and great interaction with younger cast members. OLTL does a great job with Dorian’s and Vicki’s story lines. GH is the worst offender. What the heck has happened to Edward, Monica and Bobbi? Why the he!l did they get rid of Alan? AMC is not much better. Retiring Joe Martin to Miami is a dumb idea. My guess is the actor didn’t want to move to L.A. But I loved his interactions with his sons Tad and Jake. He’s been sorely missed by this fan.

Nixon bugs me in that she’s such a huge booster of AMC, but says little of OLTL. I know that AMC is her “real” baby, but OLTL has stood the test of time and needs her support, especially right now. It’s a better soap than AMC, and has been you several years.

My comment is about the workers she was talking about. She said she had people that had been there in New York working for 40 years but they “could not come to Los Angeles”. Why not? Alot of companies transfer their employees. So they worked for these shows for a long time, they are great crews, but they just said “sorry, your fired!” Wow! I feel sorry for those people. Especially in these times when alot of them probably wont be able to find a job!

Funny that Agnes blames GL’s demise on bad writing, and AMC just hired one of the writers who put GL in the grave.

Have you seen AMC in the past few years? They could hire someone who was braindead and it would be a step up.

Ms. Nixon meant to say Nancy and *Chris* slept in separate beds.

I have watched ATWT since 1962 and have seen many new cast members. If anyone knows of a way to help keep this show on the air, please email me. Is there a movement in progress to do the same? And please bring back Martha Byrne to play Lily (since the 80′s?)

BTW, I am a college grad, and I enjoy the soap for its “get away time during lunch” entertainment it provides. One does not have to watch “graduate level” on tv, (should there be any)to be entertained. ~ Mary

I love Agnes Nixon interviews. She’s a very classy lady and as big as she is in the industry, she never fails to give credit to others.

Recently, I saw her video interview at http://www.ustownhall.com and it was nice to see how much appreciation she had for Irna Phillips and how she talked about Irna in such glowing terms. Not everyone in show biz does that.

    Plus, she still looks fantastic!

When Agnes Nixon refers to revolutionary storylines, she’s really saying how they were revolutionary for the housewives in the flyovers states. Soaps are about a decade behind the rest of Hollywood in terms of breaking barriers. There may be talented people writing and acting on soaps, but let’s not pretend that most of the audience is not the same brain-dead crowd that watches Nancy Grace and reruns of Father Dowling Mysteries.

    • Vikki Sixx

Actually, as for the gay storylines…Agnes Nixon was right…soaps broke the mainstream barrier with that. And I am highly offended by the audience comment. Soaps are hardly just watched by the braindead masses. That would be prime time television.

Over the years, I have watched every single soap still on the air and the ones that have ended since the 90s. I am a soap opera junkie. I had to quit watching AMC a few years back because of how little character building there was and how ridiculous the stories were (not to mention the rip off reveals such as long presumed dead characters being murderers with hyped up mysteries about them and such). I literally couldn’t take the terrible stories and even worse acting any longer. So for Agnes Nixon to make the subtle digs at the writers of GL and ATWT was ridiculous and highly unfounded. There is a reason I spent the last full month of GL crying during every episode. Those characters were given actual character building and I cared about them. As with ATWT, sure, it has its hokey storylines but it has its great ones and some great writing (The death of Brad and how it impacted Katie, Paul and Emily finally getting together, Carly’s alcoholism). It sounds to me like Ms Nixon needs to get off her high horse and take a closer look at her show before insulting the writing of others.

Well I still watch Y&R every day. Yes, the storylines are completely far-fetched at times, but I don’t know of a better cast of actors. These folks memorize dozens of pages of scripts every day, and deliver the goods–even when they’re trying to convince us that a woman could completely miscarry a fully developed fetus and not have any memory of it (!). But when this show stays true to its roots: Family and relationships and romance, there is no better soap on the air.

make us laugh make us cry make us wait

  • Bhim

Okay, then why does everyone except Y&R and B&B has cheap looking closing credits? I can understand cost-cutting, but all of the ABC soaps and DAYS look like they use the fonts found on the computer.
