Exclusive: 'Chuck' recruits Willard, Kurtz for top-secret mission

Tags: , News

I smell a spin-off!

Chuck has tapped Fred Willard and Swoosie Kurtz to guest star as a Hart to Hart-esque spy couple now over-the-hill but still in the game, sources confirm to me exclusively.

The TV vets will turn up at the end of the season when they’re recruited for a sure-to-be-hilarious mission.

Do you smell it too?!

awesome… Fred Willard always makes me laugh!

    • jmo

How great would it be if Suzie and Fred guest star on Modern Family? A spy couple on Monday and parents to Phil on Wed?

      • ldc7984

he was in the christmas episode via webcam

  • Semaphore

Ugh, Fred Willard. What’s next, Chris Elliot?

    • jp

I hope so – I LOVE CHRIS ELLIOT. Let’s hope the network picks up on it!

      • runnersmatch

Haha, that would be funny too

  • Shadow Step

Are you kidding – why would the young people wanna watch old people? (Thats what the advertisers want)

    • Corrinne

You people want to watch an older spy couple because they want to see that spies can have a successful long term relationship. It will provide hope that Chuck and Sarah can work out in the future.

      • Corrinne

        meant “young” not you.

      • sarah

        i agree

    • Paloma

      Ageist much?

Why shouldn’t “young” people be interested in the entire spectrum of life or are you saying that all “young” people are so shallow that they only want to watch mirrors of themselves? In the real world there exist people of all ages cohabitating, working together, living. So why should television be so shallow as to exclude more than half the population from its scripted programming? Or worse, define “older people” as only parents, grandparents and minor characters meant only to facilitate (or screw up) the lives of young people. If that is all television can produce, that would be boring indeed. (Oh, right … it does do that most of the time. No wonder the networks are hurting.)

    • bdoll

because “young people” know fred willard is HILARIOUS. you have no idea what you are talking about.

  • jake

i thought this was an apocalypse now reference

    • Josh M

      I totally did too.

  • Emily N

Fantastic news. I think they’re both great!

  • Juba Carmichael

Oh boy, it’ll be so nice!

  • Randy

Love it. Chuck has never gone wrong with a guest star even when it looked like it could suck.

    • Andrew Clifton-brown

Oh, have to disagree there Randy. I didn’t think Vinnie jones was that great.

  • M

Could this be a spin off?! Fred Willard desperately needs his own show!

  • Faith

Swoosie Kurtz is awesome! She was a great Aunt Lily in Pushing daisies so great to see her in Chuck.

  • tvgirl48

Why not? They’ve gone with younger celeb casting so why not try some older recognizable names? And Chuck does really well with guest stars. But, alas, I have a feeling it still won’t get people to watch the show.

    • Eric

6.9 Million people watched it last week…Its doing just fine and its gaining steam…The numbers keep slowly crawling…

    • Erin

I actually just started watching the show this season.

      • Kris

Me too. Just finished watching Season 1 on DVD, moving on to Season 2. Can’t believe what I’ve been missing!

  • Meg

A Pushing Daisies star on Chuck?

    God loves me.

    *dies*

    • Sistinas

      ME TOO!! *joins Meg*

    • Anna

Oh I know huh! If only it was Ned or Olive!

      • Lau

Oh please! Cheno in Chuck would freaking fantastic!

      • castiella

Dude. Someone should start a “Cheno on Chuck: petition, because this NEEDS to happen.

      • Cheri

I don’t know if I could take the ensuing epicness, but I would risk it anyway. What a way to go!

  • Zoe

Really Chuck Producers? I mean they are good actors but really?! When I read the casting note at one of the spoiler sites it said they would be in their 50s, and Willard is about 70 and Kurtz in her mid 60s. Nothing against them casting older but I was hoping they would go for a bit of classic throwback casting. In fact my dream would have been Kate Jackson and Bruce Boxleitner, the incomparable Scarecrow and Mrs King, who are late 50s/early 60s, but unfortunately they ruined that idea by already casting Bruce as Papa Awesome.

    • Jim

Jackson and Boxleitner sprung to my mind when I read that too. lol. That show went off the air 4 months before I was even born! Still great though!

Yeah, I like these people but I thought they wanted big familiar older faces that young people still appreciate. Willard and Kurtz are entertaining but they won’t be the sort of draw that I think they were aiming at. I thought they were going for another deal where they could be like ‘SCOTT BAKULA ON CHUCK TONIGHT’ in all the ads (by the way, him standing at a microphone introducing the Monday shows and making a QL reference was inspired)

      • Zoe

Yes, Jim, the casting note said “major promotable guest star” for both roles. Both these actors are well known but like you, I don’t think they fit the Major Promotable Guest Star draws they were going for.

    • Anne

I agree with Zoe. A Bruce and Kate pairing would have been AWESOME! What a shame, especially since the producers like to throw in gags, lines and references from 70 and 80 icons.

      • Zoe

yes, well anyone who ever watched SMK knows that their are many, many parallels between the two shows, in fact I would be stunned if at least one of the Chuck writers didn’t watch SMK given the amount of stuff that is almost exactly the same on the show.

      • castiella

        Isn’t Boxleitner Awesome’s dad, though? I should IMDB this…

      • castiella

Yep, Boxleitner is “Dr. Woody Woodcomb,” Captain Awesome’s dad. He’s the one who uttered the immortal “Sam Kennison and an Indian lesbian” line re: Jeffster.

      • annie

OMG the Sam Kennison/Indian lesbian comment was hysterical. I am still laughing at that one now.

    • bdoll

i love kate jackson and bruce boxleitner too but i hardly think this is a casting mistake. a pushing dasies alum and a comedy legend who’s been in everything from waiting to guffman to dodgeball. i see where you are going with the scarecrow and mrs. king thing but to complain about such a great casting seems silly. i also think these 2 names will have a bigger draw and be more familiar to oung people.

  • Cali

As long as you smell a fourth season I don’t care what they do!

  • sarah

i LOVE swoosie kurtz! she’s amazing!

  • Lara

YES. I miss Swoosie Kurtz on my TV.
