Jay Leno addresses his planned return to 'The Tonight Show,' ongoing negotiations with Conan O'Brien

Categories: Television, TV Biz

Though NBC was expected to make an announcement by today about a possible resolution to the ongoing negotiations with Conan O’Brien, Jay Leno gave an unexpected update in tonight’s monologue about the genesis of his primetime show and where everything stands. The network just released the following transcript from tonight’s installment of The Jay Leno Show:

“I thought maybe I should address this — at least give you my view of what has been going on here at NBC.  Oh, let’s start in 2004 — 2004, I’m sitting in my office, an NBC executive comes in and says to me, ‘Listen, Conan O’Brien has gotten offers from other networks.  We don’t want him to go, so we’re going to give him The Tonight Show.’  I said, ‘Well, I’ve been No. 1 for 12 years.’  They said, ‘We know that, but we don’t think you can sustain that.’  I said, ‘Okay.  How about until I fall to No. 2, then you fire me?’  ‘No, we made this decision.’  I said, ‘That’s fine.’  Don’t blame Conan O’Brien.  Nice guy, good family guy, great guy.  He and I have talked, and not a problem since then.  That’s what managers and people do; they try to get something for their clients. I said, ‘I’ll retire, just to avoid what happened the last time.’  Okay.

“So time goes by, and we stay No. 1 up until the day we leave.  We hand… [applause here] No, no.  Okay, but I’m leaving before my contract is out.  About six to eight months early.  So before I could go anywhere else — I would be at least a year or 18 months before I could go and do a show somewhere else.  I said to NBC, ‘Would you release me from my contract.’  They said, ‘We want to keep you here.’  Okay.  What are your ideas?  They said, ‘How about prime time?’  I said, ‘That will never work.’  ‘No, no, we want to put you on at 10:00.  We have done focus groups.  People will love you at 10:00.  Look at these studies showing Jay’s chin at 10:00.  People will go crazy.’  Didn’t seem like a good idea at the time.  I said, ‘All right, can I keep my staff?’  There are 175 people that work here.  I said, ‘Can I keep my staff?’  ‘Yes, you can.  Let’s try it.  We guarantee you two years on the air, guaranteed.  Now for the first four or five months against original shows like CSI, you’ll get killed, but in the spring and summer when the reruns come, that’s when you’ll pick up.’  Okay, great.  I agree to that.

“Four months go by; we don’t make it.  Meanwhile, Conan’s show during the summer — we’re not on — was not doing well.  The great hope was that we would help him.  Well, we didn’t help him any, okay.  They come and go, ‘This show isn’t working.  We want to let you go.’  ‘Can you let me out of my contract?’  ‘No, you’re still a valuable asset to this company.’  ‘How valuable can I be?  You fired me twice.  How valuable can I be?’  Okay.  So then, the affiliates are not happy.  The affiliates are the ones that own the TV stations.  They’re the ones that sort of make the decisions; they’re not happy with your performance and Conan is not doing well at 11:30.  I said, ‘What’s your idea?’  They said, ‘Well, look, how about you do a half-hour show at 11:30?’  Now, where I come from, when your boss gives you a job and you don’t do it well… I think we did a good job here, but we didn’t’ get the ratings, so you get humbled.  I said, ‘Okay, I’m not crazy about doing a half hour, but okay.  What do you want to do with Conan?’  ‘We’ll put him on at midnight, or 12:05, keeps The Tonight Show, does all that, he gets the whole hour.’  I said, ‘Okay.  You think Conan will go for that?’  ‘Yes, yes.  [laughter from the audience]  Almost guarantee you.’  I said okay.  Shake hands, that’s it.  I don’t have a manager, I don’t have an agent, that’s my handshake deal.

“Next thing I see, Conan has a story in the paper saying he doesn’t want to do that.  They come back to me and they say, ‘If he decides to walk and doesn’t want to do it, do you want the show back?’  I go, ‘Yeah, I’ll take the show back.  If that’s what he wants to do.  This way, we keep our people working, fine.’ So that’s pretty much where we are.  It looks like we might be back at 11:30; I’m not sure.  I don’t know. [applause]  I don’t know.  But through all of this — through all of this, Conan O’Brien has been a gentleman.  He’s a good guy.  I have no animosity towards him.  This is all business.  If you don’t get the ratings, they take you off the air.  I think you know this town, you can do almost anything.  You get ratings, they keep you.  I don’t get ratings; he wants.  That was NBC’s solution.  It didn’t work, so we might have an answer for you tomorrow.  So, we’ll see.  That’s basically where it is.”

Exclusive: Eric Braeden talks about return to 'Young and the Restless' today

The moustache is back! After an intense negotiation that had many fans worrying whether their favorite character was gone for good, Victor Newman, aka Eric Braeden, finally re-appeared at the end of today’s episode of The Young and the Restless (to relive the moment, click here). EW talked exclusively to Braeden about being back on TV’s No. 1 daytime drama and what fans can expect now that the boss is back.

EW: What was your first day back like on the set?

Eric Braeden: It was actually very nice. It started with the security guys at the gate who welcomed me back. And there was a special welcome back sign in my parking place. The crew throughout the day was very nice…they even came from other shows. It was very nice, very humbling.

Did anyone think you weren’t coming back at all?

Yes, some people thought that I wouldn’t. They were afraid I wouldn’t. Others said they knew I’d be back.

How long is your new contract for?

Three years.

How do you feel about the way head writer Maria Bell brought Victor back?

I feel very good about Maria, period. She’s done a wonderful job and I liked what she intends to do. If had not talked to her, I would not have come back. She had a great deal to do with it. So did (CBS Corp CEO) Les Moonves.

Did Les call you personally?

We talked at the very end (of the negotiations). He has been very loyal and has been a friend.  If I had thought they (CBS and Y&R’s home studio, Sony) were united, I would have been gone.

Now that Victor’s back, what will be his first order of business? Repairing the rift between Adam and Nick? Divorcing Ashley?

Victor will be at his Machiavellian best. He is going to get even. This is payback time for a number of people.

Will we see yet another wedding with Nikki this year?

I don’t know. We have been through a few. Who knows? Hope springs eternal. Maybe that’s the definition of insanity, making the same mistakes over and over.

What has fan reaction been like?

I don’t mean to sound corny but it’s really meant a great deal to me. There was an enormous outpouring and I deeply appreciate that. It was one of the most heartwarming aspects of the whole miserable period.

What do you think about the cancellation of CBS’ As the World Turns?

I have not really thought about the implications. My question is how they are going to replace it? With more game shows?

What do you think it means to Y&R’s future?

I think Y&R’s future is contingent upon the ratings. Obviously none of the soaps are kept alive for the sake of loyalty. It’s all about ratings. It’s show business. Period.

Scoop: 'The Office' plotting a David Brent-Michael Scott showdown?

Categories: The Office

Funny story: I heard an unconfirmed rumor earlier today that Ricky Gervais was seriously considering reprising his role as original Office manager David Brent on the U.S. version later this season. Too good to be true, right? That’s what I thought. Well, about an hour ago, Ricky Gervais took the stage at press tour (he’s here promoting his new self-titled animated HBO comedy) and hinted that he might do something with the U.S. Office next season. Bottom line? I think there’s a very strong chance that Michael Scott is going to come face-to-face with his British doppelganger, the only question now is when.

Can you imagine?!

ABC has found success with its comedy lineup of Modern Family, The Middle, and Cougar Town but it’s not resting on its laurels. Sitcom development for fall 2010 is well underway at the network. To wit, ABC just ordered a multi-camera comedy pilot from writer/executive producer Shana Goldberg-Meehan (Friends) and Warner Bros. TV. The unnamed, half-hour project is about two sisters at different stages in their romantic relationships: one is happy but isn’t married while the other gets pregnant and hitched — fast.

Exclusive: Key source in Conan O'Brien negotiations says deal 'possible' by the weekend

Categories: Misc., Television, TV Biz

A key source in the ongoing negotiations between NBC and Conan O’Brien denied an Internet report that a deal was in place to return Jay Leno to The Tonight Show, but did speak optimistically about the talks and a possible end to the time shift disaster that has captivated the media and — ironically — reinvigorated Leno’s and O’Brien’s ratings over the last four days. “We would like to see it resolved by the weekend,” said the source, who did not want to be identified by name because of the heightened sensitivity surrounding the meetings. “It’s possible.”

It seems likely that Leno will end up returning to The Tonight Show, where he earned the title of the King of Late Night, while O’Brien’s representatives will negotiate a settlement for the 46-year-old comedian to leave the network. It also seems certain that the settlement will involve some sort of compromise that prevents O’Brien from immediately jumping to the competition. Late Night with Jimmy Fallon will continue to air at 12:30 a.m. “The whole point of a settlement is to negotiate a way out — a way that Conan can, over time, still perform and earn his living — and NBC is comfortable with the decision they are making,” the source said. “It’s all part of a negotiation.”

Though public perception is strong that NBC treated O’Brien unfairly by demanding that he retreat to the 12:05 a.m. time slot to accommodate The Jay Leno Show at 11:35 p.m., the source stressed that NBC “always has the right to cancel, always has the right to fire” someone based on performance (the once-venerable franchise with O’Brien is down 50 percent from a year ago, when Leno was pulling in an average of 5 million viewers). The source added that there are no time-slot restrictions in O’Brien’s contract, so the network was within its right to move The Tonight Show (even though it has never aired at 12:05 a.m. in the show’s 55-year history). The source also added that a heavily-reported clause in O’Brien’s contract that guaranteed him a hefty payout of $40 million or more if he wasn’t given The Tonight Show was not applicable here.

The source acknowledged that both sides have consulted with Universal Studios President/COO Ron Meyer for assistance in the talks.

NBC’s handling of O’Brien has been harshly denounced by fans and the nation’s TV critics, and has culminated in multiple online campaigns that call for NBC to keep the redhead. The source said that NBC wasn’t troubled by the attacks as much as they were by O’Brien’s jokes regarding Jay Leno (sample yuk from Jan. 13: “You can do anything you want in life, unless Jay Leno wants to do it, too.”). Says the source, “It’s completely wrong, uncalled-for, and I don’t quite know where it’s coming from.”
