Kate Gosselin's next gig will be .... a reality show? A talk show? World domination?

A TLC spokeswoman confirmed that it has a “number of different scenarios” to help kick-start the next chapter of Kate Gosselin’s TV career but nothing’s been set in stone. That, of course, didn’t stop one online publication from reporting that the ex-star of Jon and Kate Plus 8 will appear in a new, fish-out-of-water show that could bow as early as this year. Apparently, the idea is to insert Gosselin into many different jobs to see how she handles them – kind of like how The View borrowed her for a guest-hosting gig last September. A TLC source only had this to say about the latest rumor: “This is just the latest speculation from supposed sources …We are still in development and looking at a number of ideas. When we have determined what the show will be, you will hear directly from us.”

Gosselin remains under contract with TLC and, as such, must seek the network’s approval to attempt other projects, such as a View-like spinoff in the works at Telepictures that features Gosselin and Food Network star Paula Deen. That project remains in the development stage.

'Day One' series downgraded to two-hour movie; airdate yet-to-be determined

Lost among all the news about Jay Leno’s cancellation at 10 p.m. and his return to 11:30 p.m. was this (disappointing) update from NBC: the suits have decided to air Day One – an apocalyptic drama from Heroes scribe Jesse Alexander – as a two-hour backdoor pilot (that’s industry code for: it’ll run as a TV movie and if viewers like it, it may be turned into a series).

NBC had originally planned to air the high-concept show as a 13-episode series after the Winter Olympics, but ended up downgrading the project to a four-hour miniseries back in October. Now Alexander’s handiwork has been cut back to a TV movie that has yet to get an airdate — a decision that was no doubt fueled by the disappointing ratings for the similarly themed ABC’s sci-fi series FlashForward and V. Despite lots of early fanfare, FlashForward‘s audience dropped from 12.5 million to 7.07 million in just three months, while V lost 35% of its audience (14.3 million to 9.3 million) over just four airings.

But other concerns about making it into a series may have been in play, like the show’s potentially high cost given the amount of computer-generated images it was expected to demand (in a rough trailer leaked last year, the drama features smoke columns that rise from the city). Alexander described his high-concept show this way on his website: “It is the story of ordinary people working together to save the world from an extraordinary threat. Though Day One’s prime time adventures are simple and compelling, its mythology is vast and designed to be experienced across multiple media platforms.”

Entertainment President Angela Bromstad tried to temper expectations at NBC’s press conference for the nation’s TV critics Jan. 10 by saying what she didn’t expect from Alexander’s show — that is, before it was turned into a two-hour movie. “We’ve always looked at Day One as a big event for us and not necessarily a show that would be an ongoing…you know, a returning show for a second season. It would depend on its success. I think just by the nature of the genre, [these genre shows] tend to get a little narrow.”

Ratings for Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien improve in light of late-night controversy

The ongoing tug-of-war between Conan O’Brien and NBC has been a boon for ratings. The firestorm that erupted over the weekend and culminated yesterday with O’Brien’s statement that “I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction” has not only reinvigorated the monologues for all the late-night shows but given the No. 4 ranked Peacock a much-needed boost in the ratings. From Jan. 11 to Jan. 12 alone, The Jay Leno Show went from 4.799 million viewers to 6.099 million, as fans tuned in to see what the chinned one had to say about his controversial time shift. “I have to tell you, the folks here at NBC don’t handle these things well,” he said this week. “They don’t have a lot of tact. Like, after they canceled the show, they told me if I put on 10 pounds I can get on The Biggest Loser.” Leno’s been averaging 5.4 million during the fourth quarter.

At the same time, The Tonight Show has seen its overnight ratings tick up well over its fourth quarter average of 1.8 rating/5 share: On Monday, O’Brien earned a 2.3/6 in 56 local markets (the most immediate ratings available until nationals are released Jan. 22) and on Tuesday, his overnight rating jumped to a 2.8/7. His fourth quarter average in homes is 1.8/5. His yuks about his fate only seem to get better and better. “When I was a little boy, I remember watching The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and thinking, ‘someday, I’m going to host that show for seven months,” he said on Tuesday’s show. On both nights, however, Letterman still won the timeslot (3.4/9 and 3.8/9, respectively) as he, too weighed in on the brouhaha with jokes at Leno’s expense (Letterman’s fourth quarter average is 3.0/8 in homes): “A couple of minutes ago, Conan O’Brien, who was the host of The Tonight Show over there at NBC, announced that he would not follow Jay Leno at 12:05. Yeah, so you know what this means — that’s right, I knocked off another competitor.”

Jimmy Fallon also saw his overnight ratings improve from Monday to Tuesday (1.1/4 to 1.3/5), as well, with jokes like this: “Is anyone here flying this weekend? There are so many delays at my airport, my flight was bumped from 12:35 a.m. to 1:05 a.m.”

ABC to develop comedy with Matthew Perry

ABC announced today that it will develop a sitcom pilot called Mr. Sunshine that will star Matthew Perry. Written by Perry, Alex Barnow, and Marc Firek through Sony, the comedy focuses on a man (Perry) who realizes that, at 40, he can no longer fall back on his charm and sense of humor. His character also manages a local sports stadium in San Diego. Tommy Schlamme (The West Wing) will direct the pilot, which will be executive produced by Perry and Jamie Tarses, the former ABC entertainment president who now operates her own production shingle, Fan Fare. Perry told EW.com about the project in October. “We’re trying to do a show that’s really, really funny and can slow down and play some heartfelt moments” Perry said. “All of this stuff originally came from watching a lot of Alan Partridge and the British Office, and just wanting to go be funny again.”
