'House' scoop: Jesse Spencer on Jennifer Morrison's exit and possible return

Categories: House, Misc.

After spending the last couple years on the sidelines, Jesse Spencer is back in the thick of things on House. In this season’s first four months alone Chase separated from his wife, murdered an African dictator, physically assaulted his boss, and took his sometimes-miserable old job back. And Jesse Spencer has been loving every minute of it. “Season 6 has been awesome,” he told me last night at Fox’s press tour party. “They’ve been writing some really good stuff for me. It’s been pretty dark, but really fun to play.”

In the following video interview, Spencer discusses the the new energy on the set, the loss of his leading lady, Jennifer Morrison, and the possibility that she might return at some point. (UPDATE: JMo’s returning!) And keep watching to see what Spencer’s co-stars, Olivia Wilde and Peter Jacobson, have to say about the show’s newest couple: Thaub. READ FULL STORY »

ABC entertainment president on NBC's primetime woes: 'We want a vibrant landscape'

Categories: Television, TV Biz

No, ABC is not gloating over NBC’s problems at 10 p.m. Though Entertainment President Steve McPherson said his network is up over 8 percent in the timeslot since The Jay Leno Show debuted last fall, he told the nation’s TV critics today that it was a “tragic thing” that the timeslot was taken away from the creative community and he’s not rejoicing over the show’s cancellation. “We are all competitive and we want a vibrant landscape,” he said. “We want a good competitor. It’s like playing for the Yankees and the Boston Red Sox stop playing baseball. You can’t get excited about that.”

ABC won’t have a dog in the fight should Conan O’Brien decide to leave NBC because he refuses to move back to the 12:05 a.m. time period. “We don’t have plans to change our late night right now,” McPherson said. “I love Kimmel, he’s been amazing.”

As for the future of V, McPherson said it wasn’t his intention to run such a short first chapter, but “production issues” took over and the network was forced to give it a limited run in the fall. ABC will return the sci-fi redux as well as FlashForward in March, he said, to give them uninterrupted runs that the network can promote and “turn into an event.”

Finally, McPherson couldn’t say whether the ratings-challenged Scrubs and Better Off Ted will survive to see another season. “I’m not going to lie,” he conceded. “The numbers are not encouraging.”

'Bones' scoop: Emily Deschanel says Booth/Brennan twist a 'good' thing

Categories: Ausiello TV, Bones, Misc.

Bones fans, go ahead and relax. The “different trajectory” that exec producer Stephen Nathan teased was coming up for Booth and Brennan on Bones will not involve any kind of relationship setback. On the contrary. According to Emily Deschanel, the events of the upcoming 100th episode “changes things in a good way” between B&B. For more on that, as well as new intel on the identity of the bride and groom tying the knot later this season, check out my Q&A with Deschanel from Fox’s press tour party last night… READ FULL STORY »

Fox suits on nabbing Conan O'Brien: 'We are not free to talk'

Despite intense speculation that Fox could steal Conan O’Brien away from NBC now that Jay Leno is bumping him at 11:30 p.m., the Fox executives didn’t have any breathless announcements to make today regarding their future late-night plans. “Our position has been consistent all along,” Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly told the nation’s TV critics in Pasadena, CA. “We do have the desire to do (late night) five nights a week. I love Conan personally and professionally but right now he has a decision to make about his future, so there are no conversations to be had. We talked to his people. We’ve had informal conversations. Beyond that, we are not free to talk about any other business proposition and we haven’t.”

Fox insiders have confirmed that the network’s affiliates are open to a late-night show at 11 p.m., especially if it involved the caliber of an O’Brien or even a Jay Leno. Reilly reminded the press that many stations already have contracts in place for syndicated programming. “That becomes a very sensitive business discussion in a market-to-market basis,” he said. “If you have a top piece of talent, it makes it a conversation to have.”

Meanwhile, insiders familiar with the negotiations said it may be 10 days or more before anyone knows whether O’Brien will agree to follow Leno’s half-hour show at midnight on NBC. NBC Chairman Jeff Gaspin told the press on Sunday that it’s not a done deal that The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien will air at 12:05 a.m. after the Olympics. “The talks are ongoing,” he said. “[But] I hope and expect, before the Olympics begin, we will have everything set. I can’t imagine we won’t.”

In other news, Reilly said it was his intention to move ahead with the planned Our Little Genius quiz show despite an on-set snafu that prompted executive producer Mark Burnett to throw out the first two episodes. Network insiders say an” inadvertent” mistake was made in the way some of the child contestants were prepped for the competition. Burnett noticed what happened, immediately called Fox, and offered to pay for a reshoot himself, insiders say. A Fox spokeswoman stressed that at no time were the children given the answers.

“Our intention is to do the show,” says Reilly.

Simon Cowell confirms his departure from 'American Idol' this season

Categories: American Idol, TV Biz

American Idol fans, start preparing those goodbye tributes: Simon Cowell announced today that this year’s ninth season will be his last. The irascible judge told the nation’s TV critics in Pasadena, CA that he will team with Fox to launch a stateside version of his popular UK show The X Factor in fall 2011. “We did talk about me staying on both shows but when we looked at the practicalities of that, it was impossible,” Cowell told the press. “In my opinion, it’s like having a good player and a good football team. The two have to be okay together. I believe it’s not my show, but it’s still very close to me. We made sure when we did this, that I would be protected. I’m confident it will continue to be the No. 1 show. Everyone is committed to keeping it that way.”

Like Idol, X Factor is a televised talent search that pits contestants against one another and the prize is usually a recording contract. The UK version was responsible for the launch of Leona Lewis, among others. The show divides contestants into four categories — guys, girls, groups, and singers of all ages — and already airs in many countries. “It’s a big, big production,” said Cowell, who literally signed his contract with Fox at the press conference today. “There is no upper age limit on X Factor and groups are allowed to enter. We gave ourselves time to set it up. It gives us time to work out who the judging panel will be.

“I’m doing X Factor in America because I believe I can find someone incredibly talented through this process,” Cowell continued. “This country, thank God, has got thousands and thousands of people still waiting to be discovered. I want to find a star at the end, I genuinely do.”

Cowell said he was offered more money to stay on Idol but it wasn’t about the cash. “I felt like doing something different,” he said. “I want to leave Idol this year bigger and better than it’s ever been before. Having already done the auditions, it feels fresh, it feels relevant. I like the contestants this year. This final year for me feels different. I never would have wanted to walk out when the show was No. 21 in the ratings. You want to leave on a high. It’s been a fantastic time. We’re going to do something new. America needs a different type of show.”

As for Cowell’s replacement, the Fox suits said they have plenty of time to figure out how to make up for the huge void. “We are not going to find a Simon clone to do what he does because he is one of a kind,” said Peter Rice, Fox entertainment chairman. “The reason we are making the announcement in January is to give ourselves time and allow people to come forward. We were frankly surprised at the enthusiasm in replacing Paula. We have to make sure the chemistry is as good as it can be. So I don’t think we will rush into that.” As for Ellen DeGeneres’ quip to EW recently about her threatening to bolt if Cowell leaves, Rice deadpanned, “I think she was making a joke.”

Speaking of Abdul, Cowell did have some promising news about the ex-Idol judge: ”I adore Paula. Whatever happens, I will be working with her in some capacity because I miss her. You’re gonna have to watch this space!”
