Pilot intel: CW orders Tom Welling-produced drama

Tom Welling may be back on The CW next season — at least as a producer. The network has picked up a Welling-produced dramedy pilot set in world of competitive college cheerleading titled Hellcats. It’s Election meets Bring it On.

You thinking what I’m thinking? ‘Cause I’m thinking there may be Smallville-related strings attached to this deal. But that’s pure speculation on my part.

The CW has also given a green light to the hour-long pilots Betwixt (about urban-based ‘changelings’ who are responsible for saving humans from evil), and HMS, a Hayden Panettiere-produced (seriously!) drama about med students at Harvard. This is in addition to the two pilots the net ordered last week.

So does that mean that Smallville is canceled? I hope not

    • JD

I think it means the opposite – the network agrees to produce this series in exchange for Tom signing on for a 10th season of Smallville.

      • athena606

he already signed on for a tenth season maybe this is part of the deal

      • runnersmatch

I hope they don’t cancel the show

As long as they cast Jodie Sweetin it will be great!!!!!

  • Gabriela

I am so excited, Tom shines in every aspect but there is something about his producing ways that its pure gold…just see how Smallvillee changed this season

No matter the series, hopefully CW has learned that there must be a “hook” or “twist” that intrigues viewers. Vampire Diaries is full of them. Any new genre show had better stock up–because it’s hard to break thru without big buzz.

Please don’t let this be the last season of Smallville.. I really want a season 10!

    • Beth

      Agreed!!! Bring on Season 10!!!

  • Sophie

I probably could have jumped on HMS if it weren’t being produced by Hayden Panettiere.

    • Laura

Seriously, isn’t she like a sophomore in college? How can she produce a show about med school?

      • amber

she isn’t even going to college since apparently shes experienced so much of the real world that she doesn’t need that.

    • mishka

She is just investing her money in the project that’s all.

  • Maria

Just because Tom is producing this, doesn’t mean it’s possibly the last season. He already has someone who oversees his production company.

  • RP

    These all sound terribad.

    • Erin

Agreed! And isn’t Betwixt basically Heroes?

  • E.

“Betwixt” is SUCH an awful title! There’s no way it will make it to air with that title intact. Or, since it’s the CW, maybe they’ll decide to title it “BeTwiXt.” (Thank goodness they changed their minds about “Life UneXpected!”)

I love Tom Welling, but all I care about is SV being picked up for a 10th season. I’m hearing it’s already a done deal??

  • lost4life

whoa hayden is producing HMS???? I read that script last week its EXCELLENT! she must have had NOTHING to do with it except add her name

  • mralphafreak

Okay… I thought TheCW was on their way to better TV shows, and now Madame Ostroff pulls out the teensoap-club again? Really?
Hayden Panettiere is producing? Oh really?!?!?
The new projects sound just awful.

  • Anna

oh lord this all sounds so lame. the cw is aweful. i wish they would cancel all the bad shows. Gossip girl, for me, is DONE. They should have kept gilmore girls.

  • Mohammad

    smallville’s gonna be back

producers don’t do much anyways haha

  • athena606

hmmm.. another genre show CW i think they are finally accepting where their niche is!!! they have wednesday wide open and MP is sure to be cancelled and the still have the 9-10 hour on Friday open too so it looks good for Smallville IMHO

  • mgb

Congratulations to Tom Welling on his new project. Cheerleading is not my thing, but it sounds like something the CW’s target audience would like. The changling series sounds more interesting to me personally, but my main focus is still on Smallville. I’m waiting for the official season ten announcement, which will come soon, I hope.
